Hi Baz,

An internal server error normally means a coding isssue on the site. In order to try and assist can you let me know how to replicate it?

Can you remember what you were doing to cause it?

Everyone else reporting the errors, any way of forcing one?

The DNS was updated to get the board on the .co.uk domain, so it's likely that the changes haven't propagated for your mobile provider yet. For most ISPs, it usually takes less than a couple of hours, but the official line is "within 48 hours".

(I've sent this to phonics; SvN; Kikó; ItalAussie; & John. Th'admins innit.)

Right everyone, there's been some talk on here about upgrading the forum license to a legit, paid-for one, with the aid of community donations. Well, after some contact with the Gods at vBulletin, I’ve weighed up some prices and options to mull over.

First option, and one I’d like to discourage early on, is to pay an annual subscription to vB and have it cloud hosted by them, along with the latest forum software. It costs £118.55 a year. If 24 people paid £5, we’d have enough. This would need to be renewed every 12 months.

Some PROS to consider:
The forum software automatically updates itself to the latest version We can choose to include ads if we wish, to gather a few extra quid towards the annual subscription, but it wouldn’t be much

CONS:
The £118.55 needs to be paid every year. You don’t get FTP access so there will be no Addons such as vBookie. If people drop out of the donation pool and we want to go back to being self-hosted we’d either have to go back to an older pirated version, or pay for a complete standalone license, which costs £164.04.
The previous vBulletin ran for over 10 years, which would cost £1185.50.

The other option, which I definitely favour, is to buy a vB 5 license to run on this server. It would be a case of paying for the license, uploading the forum install files to the server and then a (hopefully) smooth transition to the newest software. Then everyone can concentrate on moaning about skins again. As mentioned above, this would be a one off payment of £164.04. (There is an option to get it with a Mobile app for £262.86, but the cheaper option still allows Mobile skins, which is all we need.)

SvN ran a poll asking about which skin people used on the old forum. 40 people voted. If we divided the cost of the license into £5 donations (I know some are willing to pay more) we would require 33 supporters to raise £165.

PROS:
We’d have full access to the filesystem so can have addons, such as vBookie. It’s a one-off payment, which works out as the equivalent of paying for 17 months of Cloud hosting. So long as the forum lasts longer than 17 months, it’s better value to be self-hosted. (NB. It’s worth noting there is an additional cost of hosting, which I’ll try to cover later.) We can choose when to upgrade. If a skin or addon we use hasn’t yet been updated in-line with a vBulletin update, we could wait until it had been before upgrading.

CONS:
There is the added cost of server hosting. I’ll go into details below. Whoever’s in charge of the hosting could die/whatever and the hosting might be cancelled. (If I did die, at least Mike’d be around to keep it up. :huhu: I have no intention of sodding off though.)

Regarding the cost of the hosting, it is currently paid on a two-yearly basis, and costs £69.98. All of that has been paid for. The current lease runs until Tuesday 6th September 2016. I have previous experience with webhosting and the current provider is the best value for money I have come across. There is a cheaper package from the same provider but it has far less bandwidth. Only time will tell how much bandwidth we actually need, but an educated guess suggests the cheaper package wouldn’t be enough.

In an ideal world everyone’d all chip in for the hosting too, although I’ve already stated I’m alright for the money. However, there’s no telling of how long that’s the case for, and if we’re splitting the cost of the license, it seems reasonable to split the cost of the hosting - maybe not to pay it in full, but to at least contribute some percentage towards it?

The total cost of the license and the remaining 12 months of hosting would be £199.03.

Or if we split the annual hosting cost into £5 donations it would require 8 supporters. (On top of the 33 to raise the money for the license, totalling 41 £5 donations if my maths is right?)

One thing the hosting providers have said is they’d allow me to pay more than 2 years at once, but unfortunately it’s at no extra discount. For example, I could pay 5 years worth (£174.95) or 10 years (£349.90) and guarantee the hosting for five or ten years. For five years it would work out at 35 people paying £5 each, which I’m not sure if people will think that’s attainable?

Anyway, just thought I’d throw some figures out and see what you lot think. I was gonna post a thread (well, get Mike to) but decided to take it to the big boys in charge first and see.

That 1GB max database size is going to get hit at some point in the not too distant future.

I suspect the hardware isn't too fantastic, but it never is with a shared host. There's another 274 websites on our server, which isn't TOO bad for a shared host, but it's still a lot.

Mike
22-10-2015, 04:41 PM
No reply yet from the .ml domain company. They don't seem very good so in the long run it going wrong is a good thing. I've sent them a follow up email. I think I've posted it but I think the reason the .ml domain was suspended was because they offer a bunch of other free domains so I registered them, just in case, and I don't think they've liked that. If its not that, it's the pirate software, but I really think it's my own error.

To be fair to the hosting, any real problems have been down to human error. Phonics deleting something by mistake and myself grabbing extra free domains.

Purchasing a license for the exisiting server and forum seems the best idea, I'm happy to set up a patreon.com thing (or something like it) or we could use a paypal account for it.

Developers of the vBulletin software package for website forums released a security patch Monday night, just hours after reports surfaced that a hack on the developers' site leaked password data and other sensitive information belonging to almost 480,000 subscribers.

vBulletin officials have put in place a mandatory password reset for all users after discovering it was subjected to a hack attack. They went on to warn that the attacker "may have accessed customer IDs and encrypted passwords on our system." A separate post on the vBulletin site makes reference to a security patch for versions 5.1.4 through 5.1.9 of the vBulletin Connect software package.

Yeah I was trying to isolate the issue. There's a file somewhere that redirects the first time you come from Google, and I'm struggling to find it.

What was the cost for the legal version of the software again?

400 to have mobile functionality and another 50 quid a month on top of that. Plus, Vbulletin would regularly scan the comments/content of the site and delete anything that contradicts their terms of services. 3 strikes and we're banned and lose all the money.

Smiffy

It's been that way for at a fair few months, SvN. I thought it was just a dodgy browser.

A few months you say? That co-incides with the large amount of spam users we've been getting (it's gone from 2-3 per week to a hundred or so)

Maybe somethings been injected into the javascript?

I've fixed it. Later tonight I'll try and figure out how it happened and make sure it doesn't happen again.

When I search TheThirdHalf on Google to come here, clicking one always takes you to a filetransfer site or something, you have to click back and try again for it to direct here. Initially I assumed it was because my laptop had a virus or malware whatever but it does it on my new one I got too.

Any idea Phonics?

On mobile, if I quote a post, every time I go to post in that thread I get the quote(s) popping up in the reply box again and I need to delete them every time. It seems to sort itself out overnight, though.

Find the post you're quoting and until the multi quote button on it.

It's a chrome bug I think. Close the tab and open a new one for TTH and it'll work again.

At least that's my experience (I've had it on various sites, not just here).

Glad we're upgrading - it's likely a bit more secure than this dodgy version. I wouldn't be much use in terms of actually doing anything - I know about technology, but not on that detailed implementation level really.

General security tips:
1) don't reuse passwords on websites
2) Use two-factor authentication where available
3) Use a password manage (1Password or LastPass is good)
4) Register for updates on https://haveibeenpwned.com

Thanks for this. Apparently one of my emails has been very much "pwned". Time to change passwords.

Giggles
15-05-2017, 08:19 PM
Lastpass is also very good (1password probably does the same) for notifying you if you are using duplicates. With the built in password generator there's no reason to have two the same anyway, especially when it can change a lot of them for you with one click.
