How has that been allowed to stand :D

It's not offside and Laporte just fell over.

Ruling on the field stands.

In the same way that had the ref bought Cornet's shit when he went down under minimal contact it probably would have stood as a penalty.

Why does Guardiola always change the way they play in European quarter finals?

With Silva leaving, and Aguero a bit of a crock City really miss a lot of guile and cutting edge. Goals that get them ahead in games that matter. Better go and shell out a couple of hundred million on (hopefully) more mooks. Rodri and Cancelo definitely £120m well spent, or whatever it was.

He doesn't touch the ball and he doesn't impact on any City players (trying to play him offside doesn't count).

We've had this rule for god knows how long. It's shit in certain circumstances, but it's hardly an unknown quantity. It's not even the most egregious example of how to be shafted by the modern offside rule, tbh.

The City defender should have milked the obstruction like NRL big men.

niko_cee
15-08-2020, 10:34 PM
Of course he does.

How?

That's the rule.

It has its deficiencies - I think usually around defensive players making poor decisions due to pressure from 'offside' players (even though they're not interfering with play) - but in the present case City play offside against a guy (or they don't I don't know, probably not), he doesn't touch the ball or impede a City player so he is, be definition, not offside. It's like pushing out from a corner and catching 7 players offside but not the twat making a run from outside the box. It's galling, but it has been this way since the early 90s. Interfering with play is definitely drawn too narrowly, although I don't know that Mr through his legs tonight actually materially impacted any City player.

Waffdon
15-08-2020, 10:37 PM
Of course he does.

He doesn’t even attempt to go for it. He jumps over the ball so he literally doesn’t interfere. It’s very simple.

That team selection and general approach was awful.

You can point to the two big moments with the goal that could have been ruled out and then Sterlings big miss but really Pep got it so wrong.

At 1-1 they had a ludicrously high line with Rodri and Gundogan pushed up into the positions where David Silva, Bernado or Foden would be super effective yet they left them on the bench.

What's the point of two holding players if theres that much space behind the back line?

Mahrez and Foden have been Citys two best player since the restart, both should have started.

So do City though, and their defence is rank bad.

Ian
17-08-2020, 09:51 AM
The defence is, broadly speaking, pretty decent. However as a unit they're prone to massive lapses in concentration or organisation which costs us tight, important games. I don't know that I rate Maguire much as a leader.

Sevilla were lucky not to concede goals in that flurry after half time but then we were probably lucky Sevilla played in exactly the sort of way that suits us with lots of space to gallop or pass into. Even if we had better options off the bench I doubt it would have come with more of a plan from Solskjaer beyond "keep playing quickly and hope we find a way through."

I think he's probably something of a motivator manager (for example, the impact he appears to have had on Martial's attitude) but who doesn't have the nous to mitigate against flaws or come up with that much of a plan beyond "plug better players into the attack and hope they figure it out."

Don

They've all got massive strides to take to be very good defenders. Maguire is skinned too often for a top defender, lindelof gets the basics wrong too often, AWB can't actually play football and Williams is a kid learning. Still needs a couple in there and a proper centre mid instead of that twat Pogba.

Just a reminder that Ronald Koeman scored 239 goals in 685 games, playing primarily as a centre-back.
Also, a little less known, Fernando Hierro scored 102 in 439 games for Real Madrid, although he did play some games in midfield early on in his career.

In the 1991-92 La Liga season, Manolo won the Pichichi with 27 goals. Hierro was second with 21, Stoichkov 3rd on 17 and Koeman 4th with 16.

That's probably the sort of thing Pep hopes for when he gets to the "hard on for centre-mids in defence" stage of the Guardiola Boom-Bust cycle but forgets that it's uber-organised wankers like him turning football into a grinding borefest that makes it impossible.

Other than being able to lol at Neymar/the French I don't really have much problem with PSG, but it is disingenuous to say that all successful clubs achieve their success in the same way. There's money and then there's limitless money.

Bayern are just as bad for their domestic football environment as PSG, probably worse.

There's probably nothing really in it, but I think it's interesting that the final is likely to be contested between two teams who sometimes lack for (cliché alert) 'battle-hardened match-readiness' in the normal knock-out swing of things (due to their noncompetitive domestic environments) - an issue that the restart has sort of erased.

bruhnaldo

Speaking of fans they're apparently going to be allowing fans into some MLS matches including Orlando City.

It's a helluva thing that they're going to scheme this out so that if people say, oh i don't know, value their health more than MLS they'll just forfeit those tickets... whereas previously the idea was "any ticket unused would qualify for a 2021 ticket".

I realize it's a business and all but it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Why would they not? One Saturday and one Sunday. Plus, there probably won’t be fans at them anyway.

Yeah, I hadn't really thought about the lack of fans - I guess that's why the rule exists.

Another fly in the ointment is there's a strong suggestion City and United are both going to face League Cup round 2 exempt teams (ie CL qualified ones and Arsenal) as they'll be playing their opening game midweek rather than on the opening weekend (when I think the league cup is meant to be on - Spurs are also UEFA Cup qualifying I think). I would think the league would be keen to try to avoid a real mega match on the opening weekend so it'll be a mix of Leicester and Arsenal for the Manchesters, would be my guess.

In my mind PSG can defend a bit (I have no idea if this is accurate) so I could see them springing a surprise on Bayern (as long as they don't still have a 35 year Thiago Silva tooling around holding a high line). Bayern's defence is pretty hopeless from what I've seen of it and you'd hope Neymar or Mbappe would take their chances a bit better than the feckless Lyonnais folk the other night. There's upsides to either winning (mostly the upside being lolling at the ones who don't win) which is quite nice for a final, where you often have a clearly defined good/evil delineation of the teams. There is no underdog.
