Ok, I'm confused.
The rate of gravitational acceleration is 9.8 m/s2
Now, when it's expressed as 9.8 m/s/s - I get that, the rate increases 9.8m per second, every second. Hence;
0s = 0
1s = 9.8m
2s = 19.6m
3s = 29.4m
4s = 39.2m
That all makes sense to me. However, when expressed as 9.8 m/s2 - I don't understand the squaring bit = how does that work in terms of the calculation?

The velocity increases 9.8 m/s every second.
The /s/s part is where the square comes from (m/s)/s = (m/s)*(1/s) = (m/s^2)
Your table is not correct, btw. That would not be the distance traveled.
0s = 0
1s = 9.8m/s
2s = 19.6m/s
3s = 29.4m/s
4s = 39.2m/s
That would be correct, for velocity. Distance is different.

Cheers.
I'm gonna have to think about "(m/s)/s = (m/s)*(1/s) = (m/s^2)" and get back to you.
For the table, I just omitted the /s by mistake - I get that that's the velocity, not distance.
It seems that omitting it is what is causing your confusion. If you include it, then you can just divide your velocity (right column) by your time (left column) and the s^2 will show up.

Ok, let's take 39.2m/s, divide by our time, so 39.2m/s divide 4s = 9.8m/s. Nothing has, or needs to be squared... Am I being really thick here?

So, 4s squared is 16s... where does that get involved?
The squared denotes that it's per second, per second.

Is it not just shorthand to save writing 'per second per second' every time.

39.2 m/s divide by 4 s is 9.8 m/s^2.
x/y divided by y is x/y^2

If that's the case, it makes sense. I just couldn't work out with the squaring function came in - if it just denotes /s/s, then I get it.
So, 4s squared is 16s... where does that get involved?
You're squaring the second notation, not the number of seconds.
So, 4s squared is 16s... where does that get involved?
No. (4s)^2 is 16s^2. Need to be careful with notation. Math is applied to units just as it is to numbers.

Dimensional analysis. :drool:
Nothing better than working on a big fuck-off equation, cancelling out basically everything and being left with F = ma or something.

This isn't going to be a General Questions Thread is it?

We could use it for questions about Generals. Why did Douglas MacArthur wear that dumb hat? Etc
Other acceptable topics include Command & Conquer: Generals and the Washington Generals.

Can I slip in a sly question about what the Grand Old Duke of York's deal was?

He was really indecisive.
I'd say take it to the Duke thread but it's overrun with Mert, sadly.
