Well, we haven't got a thread yet, although the F1 thread jumped on board.

Current Infected: 28,400
Current Deaths: 563
Suspected additional Cases: 24,700

Here in Vietnam there are 12 infected, however, 3 have made a full recovery. 900 people have been quarantined at various border centers. Flights from China have been suspended. No new VISA's will be issued to Chinese folk, or foreigners who have been there in the past 2 weeks. Pretty much 90% of the population wearing masks, but they seemed to have not bothered with cleaning their fucking hands.

The government have sent a few text messages out, the first giving people instructions regarding washing hands and wearing face masks. The most recent was slightly more patriotic

Nationwide against nCoV. Please comply with regulations and recommendations of the health sector. Do not distribute false information. Do not profit from disease. Encourage good work, condemn negative behavior. Vietnam is determined to win the pandemic!

It staggers me that when these death numbers are chucked around that there’s no context given as to the existing health of those it’s killing.

It’s as if causing a panic is the aim.

Taking of which, where’s Margaret Chan these days?

Hello

The masks serve some use in stopping the spread because they stop Asians from spitting everywhere and coughing into people’s faces

Taiwan is in full meltdown though. 11 cases and the schools have been shut and people are scared to go outside. They wouldn’t let me into the bank because I didn’t have a face mask on

If it was like China which seems to be spreading exponentially then I would feel a bit uneasy, but we’ve not had a new case for over a week now. It’s all down to the media though which is many times more hysterical than the UK is

John Arne
07-02-2020, 08:30 AM
Masks are certainly useful here for that very reason. Viets have a habit of coughing and sneezing without covering their noses - so the masks are helping in that respect.

Hearing a 34 year old died from this is a game changer. Unless he was already suffering from something (it would be good to know) it could throw the "it's just like norml flu" argument out of the window.

And Margaret Chan may have gone, but the WHO is still a shower of shit. To praise China's efforts on this against a backdrop of the Chinese authorities forcing their doctor who discovered it to sign a letter saying he'd lied is batshit. Are they incompetent? Were they paid?

And why did they advise against closing borders down? You hear it and it sets the bullshit detector racing, but one would assume they know what they're doing, right?

One is an outlier, once the otherwise healthy are dropping in droves and it happens in multiple countries, then it starts becoming a concern.

Yevrah
08-02-2020, 11:17 AM
How do we know it’s an outlier? Is there any information anywhere on who it’s actually killing?

The death of a doctor seems harder to suppress than your average citizen so maybe it has taken more young and/or healthy people and we just don’t know.

Spikey M
08-02-2020, 11:24 AM
I thought that as well. The death toll could be a hell of alot higher and China are covering it up. Covering up the death of the Dr that warned against the outbreak... not so easy.

The hospitals they're building in 4 days flat are both impressive and worrying too.

Disco
08-02-2020, 12:13 PM
If there's no information on who it's actually killing your position is as shaky as mine, so still no reason to panic. It's in countries that you would presumably trust more than China and still seemingly not killing people on a large scale. It's just a new strain of 'flu', which means it will spread fast because relatively few people have an immunity but with cases in the tens of thousands and deaths at less than 1% it's not anything out of the ordinary.

Yevrah
08-02-2020, 12:25 PM
I'm close to, if not already at a point in my life where I could drop down dead any day, so I'm not panicking.

I just find the response to this and the 'efforts' to control it interesting and a shower of shit.

Until one knows more everything should have been done to isolate it and it wasn't, flights weren't grounded, people weren't refused entry. This may well amount to nothing, but if we adopt the same early doors approach we have to this to something that ends up being far more serious then it'll take a shit load of people down.

Yevrah
08-02-2020, 12:26 PM
And back to Spikey's point, it's China. Lying to the international community when telling the truth would make them look bad is a national sport over there.

Disco
08-02-2020, 12:38 PM
Actually, while shutting the airports and trying to stop people travelling sounds like a good idea it doesn't actually work, people still travel through other channels that are harder to monitor. If you let people who are going to travel anyway use airports etc then you can screen them much more easily. The Chinese are happy to segregate bits of their population at the best of times, I don't think they'd hesitate to take more drastic action if this had been something more virulent. Some of the 'shitness' (pop up hospitals notwithstanding) of the response is most likely because the virus itself isn't that mysterious or serious.

The official line from the WHO is that it's easier to track people and control the outbreak when you don't close borders.

My view is that that's bollocks and they're in the pocket of big business and governments and will say anything that those groups would like to hear, irrespective of how true it is.

Got this email yesterday:

Colleagues,

Walking in to work this morning I pondered how I and my family ought to prepare for the likelihood that next Fall we will have to deal with a pandemic, specifically how my family needs to prepare for it. For example, if we have to self-quarantine then it makes sense to have plenty of rice and beans, etc in the house!

Then I realized I could prepare for it in my work as well, at least in the early stages, and maybe we could innovatively adapt along the same lines. The first measure that occured to me was the simple and perhaps less than effective one of widely spaced seating in the classrooms. My next thought though was video transmitting my class via Skype or Facetime to students who have self-quarantined but are still lucid enough to study, or from me if I am in the same boat. An ad-hoc idea, but maybe it would be helpful as part of the university's larger policy response.

I know we have emergency preparedness plans for extreme weather and violent intruders and what not. If some component of "the university" is already contemplating how to deal with a virulent virus outbreak, great. If some one has expertise in this area I'd appreciate them sharing it. If not, it seems prudent to plan our response to what will inevitably hit our community.

I do not intend to be alarmist, just calmly prudent.

South Korea's death rate seems to be way lower than the other countries with 100+ cases. I know how these goons operate and their reporting will be at the absolute cutting edge. In Italy half the mild cases won't even have reported. They can't even drive by the rules; they're not going to turn themselves in and end up in quarantine when there are women to be chased.

The cruise ship is a nice controlled environment full of old people and their rate is half a percent.

The over reactions to this are glorious. Imagine the scenes if there was another Spanish Flu outbreak.

I've been suprised by how not serious everyone seems to think this is. It's still a new virus that is killing 2-4% of everybody it infects... and is speading at quite a fast speed (about 1000 new cases per day).
Yes, we know flu is similar - but we know what flu is - this is a new virus going around killing people.

Spikey M
28-02-2020, 10:56 AM
2-4%? We're having 1-2% reported over here, most of which are old and vulnerable people that would be finished off by the flu and - actually - ARE being killed off at a faster rate by the Flu.

It's not a nice bug, you'd want to avoid it, but for most people it's not a real problem.

I don't think they are being killed off at a faster rate by actual flu. Does standard flu kill 15% of people over 80?

And I don't understand the "for most people" line, it strikes me as a bit moronic. I know you're not the only one using it, so I don't mean to pick on you, but there are loads of things that for "most people" would never be a problem even if we did nothing to mitigate against them happening, it doesn't mean we shouldn't. Terrorism for one example.

I do agree the current efforts to tank the global economy are very disproportionate though and if they were needed, should have been done at the start of the outbreak and not now.

Japan's Olympic minister says the Tokyo 2020 Games could be postponed from the summer until later in the year amid fears over the coronavirus outbreak.

In a response to a question in Japan's parliament, Seiko Hashimoto said Tokyo's contract with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) "calls for the Games to be held within 2020".

She added that "could be interpreted as allowing a postponement".

The Games are due to be held from 24 July to 9 August.

"We are doing all we can to ensure that the Games go ahead as planned," Hashimoto added.

Under the hosting agreement the right to cancel the Games remains with the IOC.

"Hi, I'm Steve Cram and welcome to Flog It!"

It would be nice if the press reported active cases rather than the cumulative number.

Why wouldn't you enjoy the Olympics? I mean sure we're gonna win them but come on.

Because nothing is to be enjoyed.

I like the Olympics apart from the bit where it turns into jingoistic medal-counting. The sports are mostly fun.

I love the Olympics. The only time when the shit sports matter.

Remember after the London ones, when certain members of our community where going to stop watching football and follow other sports instead? :D

We somehow won more golds than China at the last one (won't happen again) and our coverage just turned into nationalistic hunt for golds and then wanking off the medal winners. Just show me the sport, regardless of nationality.

The weightlifting is the best event really.

It might happen this year if all they don't ship their athletes to Switzerland immediately.

I don't watch football anymore. :sorry:

I've never watched less than this season and when I am in my fifties like Yev, I suspect I might be close to zero, unless the fascist government forces me to watch the Saudi Stars v China Kings or whatever it will be by then.

I sort of miss how much I consumed as a kid. Recording C5's late night offerings and being fascinated by it. There's no mysteries to it any more.

I am watching a hell of a lot less football though.

American Football has taken the top spot as my favourite sport.
