The Outer Worlds is the new game from the makers of Fallout New Vegas. It's out today. You can play it on PC or XBOX One using Game pass, which is £1 for the first month on PC, seems a bargain.

The Outer Worlds is a new single-player sci-fi RPG from Obsidian Entertainment and Private Division. As you explore a space colony, the character you decide to become will determine how this player-driven story unfolds. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable.

Few of us are going to be playing this so figured we could have a thread. I'll be starting Saturday morning. Can't wait!

I will definitely be playing it at some point and I hope it's ace but finishing Heaven's Vault, getting Disco Elysium and staving off the urge to replay Mass Effect must come first.

I might pick it up in a couple of weeks.

Good this! I’ve accidentally give myself silver hair though, couldn’t be bothered fixing it!

Up to the first big choice, dunno which way to go so doing loads of side missions.

Found out this has a survival mode so will be all over that.

Me too but I've done all the side mission.

I'd give the actual game a go first. It's really not a 'vast open world' thing like the Bethesda games.

Hard is so fucking hard.

Is it open world though, just in a small ish one?

Not sure anything has ever turned me off from a space exploration game faster than "an open world, just a small ish one"

Ian

The video review I watched suggests it's a fairly directed experience in an open space rather than a Ubi-esque collect-all-the-icons style open world. More an immersive sim in a big spacerather than a Bethesda-y sprawling affair.

I am curious to see how Obsidian have got on. As far as I can see they got a massively free ride over Fallout New Vegas, with anything wrong with it (and fuck me was there a lot wrong with it) being Bethesda's fault.

Ian
27-10-2019, 05:45 PM
I mean they've done a lot more stuff with a lot more polish since their 'flawed gem' days.

And to be fair making anything in Bethesda's game engine must be a bit silk purse / sow's ear.

That's good considering it's not a space exploration game.

So we gonna act like there's no chance for large scale exploration in a fuckin space colony? That's the route we're taking?

Disco
28-10-2019, 05:45 PM
Given that space colonies are entirely made up then yeah, I reckon that's a distinct possibility.

I'll wait for this to be tidied up (read: the inevitable first expansion that finishes the game) before jumping in but it does look quite good so far.

bruhnaldo
28-10-2019, 06:38 PM
There's a distinct possibility that a space game has no chance of large scale exploration but not the other way around?

It's fucking space. "Space" is literally in the name. Vast open area is literally implied by the name of it alone.

You understand the word 'colony' yes?

bruhnaldo
28-10-2019, 09:38 PM
Explain how "colony" implies a linear story line with no room for exploration.

Is this shit supposed to be funny for ya'll or something? I'm trying to understand the rush to be as pedantically obtuse and pretentious as possible?

bruhnaldo

Like we're getting all high and mighty because someone saw a game called "The Outer Worlds", developed by the people who made Fallout New Vegas, read how you "explore a space colony" and was then taken aback that someone seemingly described it in the same linear format that Final Fantasy XIII suffered from.

Very strange behavior but go off, sis.

You did dive in nut deep with a bit of a moist comment. Own it instead of flapping your ballsack in the wind.

Or maybe read five minutes of a review, which would've been more productive than this mess.

Or, perhaps, "Oh it's more of a borderlands type shooter than fallout, actually." instead of "Well look at how fucking uppity I can be about video games!" when someone takes a passing interest!

A dios fuckin mio you people.

Started today and put a couple of hours in. Really liking it a lot so far.

I was going to divert energy to the deserters as I liked their plant based camp and they looked peaceful but Parvati swayed me right at the end.

I then talked the fella in charge to leave so the woman in charge of the deserters took over the town. Sorted, if we ignore how she’s growing food

I never seem to have enough hacking materials :(

Also, I fought some primals today. The first fight almost went very badly as both my companions were downed and I almost joined them. Second time I had a much better weapon though.

Sir Andy Mahowry

Accidentally set my companions on a guard near a door I wanted to hack as I thought an objective was behind it. It wasn't and as my standing with the place was already bad it meant everyone wanted to kill me. Had to roll back to an auto save.

Ok just up past the first planet I went with the same as Mike & Mahow. They have nailed the feeling and the general artwork and its refreshing with a bit of colour, I definitely feel like part of a Starcraft or Starship troopers universe or something.

I sort of ’Miss’ Horizon Zero Dawn and Aloy though and its hard going from a defined characted to a
Homemade one. The fact that there’s no 3rd person option makes it all a little more unpersonal somehow. On Fallout 3 and NV I would explore in 3rd person And go into 1st for fights only which was a good balance.

Finished this now.

Went with the "Hero going against the board" storyline, basically listening to this Welles guy all along. All in all, the game felt really really short. I don't know if I missed out on a lot of side-quests or exploring but didn't feel like it.

The whole game was weird. It was nowhere near the size of any of the Fallout games for instance, felt like. I also kind of felt it was ruined a bit by the environment on Monarch, which felt like the largest portion of the game. Just the colours were completely off on that planet, it sort of felt like everything was inverted or something and it just made me want to get out of there.

Byzantium felt very underwhelming as well. The design of it felt a little lazy and it just didn't feel like a bustling city.

All in all the game was kind of fun, but by the time I was done with it I felt like I should only have been scratching the surface. And the Colony never really felt like a very big place. I envisaged a little more epic space travel and diverse settings etc.

Falbrook was the best place of all.
