The bodies of 39 people have been found in a lorry container in Essex.

Police were called by the ambulance service shortly before 01:40 BST after the discovery at Waterglade Industrial Park in Eastern Avenue, Grays.

The lorry driver, a 25-year-old man from Northern Ireland, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Essex Police said the vehicle travelled from Bulgaria and entered the UK via Holyhead, Anglesey, on Saturday.

Early indications are that 38 adults and one teenager have died, the force said. There were no survivors.

Fucking hell. Clearly some trafficking gone wrong.

If the charge is murder then there would have to be more to it than trafficking gone wrong wouldn't there? Would it not be manslaughter?

If he knew they were in there and locked them in without air or whatever then you could probably argue murder.

Apparently a truck from Bulgaria that came in via Ireland and Holyhead to avoid the usual checks at Calais.

Why do people do this sort of thing? If you're intending to stay illegally couldn't you just come in as tourists and vanish?

If you’re poor and from a non eu country/not from a first world one you have absolutely no chance of coming here on a tourist visa as the assumption is that you just won’t go home again.

Great.

We organize conferences around the world with a part of the demographic being people who inject drugs, sex workers, poor and trans people. They get in on tourist visas in the non-backwards countries. For the likes of South America/Asia/USA we have to provide letters of invitation.

edit: (Many get turned away but 99.9% of the time when we look into it, they filled out the form incorrectly or waited till the day before their flight to try get one)

I'm not sure stats are available on the ratio of poor people granted tourist visas to come to the UK vs. poor people refused, but it definitely happens and happens a lot.

This is a bit David Cameron "I spoke to a black man the other day", but I have a Kenyan mate (British national now) who couldn't get his ex-fiancee into the country on a tourist visa and used to manage a guy from Pakistan who had to appeal several times to get his bloody wife in.

One article from a quick google though:

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/jul/06/lawyer-blames-visitor-visa-refusals-on-deep-underlying-racism

“the underlying view by the decision-makers are: ‘you are poor, you don’t earn much compared to us, so all you would want to do is get into the UK illegally’.

Why do you need to provide letters of invitation if it's "simply not true that you've no chance of getting into the uk on a tourist visa if you're poor and from a poor country"?

How were the Chinese people in the back of that truck meant to get their letter of invitation?

The paper trail begins and ends with them being poor and the assumption on the back of that is that they won't go home.

The article I've linked to had another link to the home office website that from their own numbers shows they refused 400,000 visa applications between April 2016 and March 2017 and refused 28% of all visitor visa applications from North Africa.

I've tried to get cricketers in from various countries on tourist visas over the years.

Aus/NZ: come on in, there's even a special visa to help give you a five year stay
South Africa: they use the Dulux colour chart, anything darker than Evening Barley and it becomes 100x more difficult
India: Do you have a corrupt uncle? If not, good luck.
Sri Lanka: lol no chance

He's right though.

Yes and the letters he's providing, proving they're going to a conference are obviously helping their visa applications. If it wasn't, why would his company be doing it?

The point I'm making is that this isn't comparable to the average poor person from a third/second world country trying to get in, because they haven't got a legitimate business supporting their application, which is why they have to resort to running the risk of freezing in the back of cargo truck. Which is the point someone in Lewis' office made, and they're right. If it wasn't virtually impossible to get in if you're poor and from a developing nation, why would they risk that shit?

How is this difficult?

Shindig
25-10-2019, 06:24 PM
The Heathrow stowaways are my favourite. Hiding in the landing gear trying to avoid freezing, being crushed or dropped over a long-haul flight. If any survive, they should get land and a spot in the House of Lords. And Davina McCall gets to interview them when they land.

Essex police have said they cannot speculate over the nationality of the 39 people found dead in a lorry on Wednesday, although they have met the Vietnamese ambassador to the UK following the tragedy.

It's for big grows where they lock a house down and put plants on every inch of floor. The people making the money aren't going to stay in the place for twelve weeks, you couldn't get someone from here to do it without either expanding your 'circle' or risking someone being reported missing, so they get a slave in to live there and do the work.

Apparently there’s a similarly big network of Chinese people in Ireland. The Chinese people want to leave China so Chinese gangsters say if you work for 12 months for them then you will be free and can live in Ireland however you please, so they go to Ireland all happy with the promises and start sending money home that they earn from working in takeaways that also have weed farms hidden in them. Then when the 12 months up they are told they must continue to grow the weed or else their family back in China will be slaughtered, and so most weed in Ireland is from Chinese gangsters.

I say apparently, cos the source is Blindboy Boatclub and he’s a renowned piss-taker.
