Afternoon.

Realised I have 3, 4 and 5 on Steam the other day. Played 3 loads and while being shit at it I have a reasonable grasp of what's going on. 4 I can't for the life of me get to grips with though.

Anyone still play? If so, which version(s) and what's your greatest achievement? Tips? Etc?

The Rhyes & Fall mod for Civ 4 Beyond the Sword is the best thing ever in Civ. I'd rank Civ 4 as the best one. 5 & 6 never really liked them. 6 because of the AI constantly spamming missionaires and being imposssible to keep diplomatic relations with as everything will annoy them eventually. Build a wonder, China denounces you, Send an envoy to a city-state, Germany denounces you. Gain a great person, Brazil denounces you etc. I've played 1,2,3 as well but that was a long time ago. Fun fact Civ 1 was the first game I ever played on a computer back in like 92-93.

I play 6 now. 4 is the 'best' but I'd just move to whatever the most modern one you have is.

By the way the Ghandi AI bug is still the best thing to happen in a video game.

He had the lowest aggression rating in the game, no matter the leader, an AI becoming a democratic nation would reduce their aggression rating by 2 which would cause the game to rotate through it's aggression rating by 2. This would push Ghandi's code from 'Aggression:1' to 'Aggression: 255' as that was the next number in the sequence.

Since then they've built it into the game where he will first strike nuke you to prevent nukes from being unleashed on the rest of the world :D

Got a cracking game on Civ 3 at the moment.

Set everything to random and ended up on an island in a biggish map. Problem being that it's full of dysentery bringing wetlands an active volcano and hordes of Barbarians coming in by boat.

It's now AD630 and I'm not even sure we've discovered fire yet.

I need to try Civ again.

When I last tried I wasn't all that into turn based games but Xcom 2 really got me interested.

Until recently I still had a functioning version of Civ2. That thoneroom

It's now 1385. I still haven't met another Civilization and we're not even out of the ancient times yet. If I get invaded I'm going to get pwned.

I've nearly cleared up all the shit and the volcano hasn't erupted in over 300 years.

I might get a boat soon.

We battled (read paid off other civs who kept laughing at our antiquated society) valiantly until the mid 1800s, when I got bored saying yes and said no. The Japanese didn't like that. It was carnage and our peoples were slaughtered.

Ho hum.

How do you see what other Civilizations have? Is there a screen somewhere that I'm missing.

In the newer ones you get a leaderboard that will tell you 'You are the 6th biggest Military Power in the world, the 3rd largest cultural power, 1st best researcher' etc. but only of Civs you've discovered. I've never played Civ 3.

Right, I'm starting a game on Sid difficulty. We'll see how that pans out...

Tiny Map
Archipelago (80% Water)
Climate, Temperature and Age of Earth all random
No Barbarians

And I'll be the Egyptians.

Yevrah
06-09-2019, 04:22 PM
Fucking hell, this is brutal. Despite starting on an 80% Archipelago I've already been blocked by another tribe starting on the same island as me so I can't even use my settler I've just produced now.

Made it to 2,000BC before the 30 army units the Iroquois had somehow produced in 40 turns invaded and kicked the shit out of me.

Might not be trying that again.

Yev if you'd like I can take you through a game of Civ IV or VI and stream it to show you what you're supposed to do. You seem to be fucking up something basic if you're not even getting to AD.

Haven't played this in decades.

Thanks Phonics. Of those I have Civ 4.

I hadn't played Civ 4 in a while so did a quick demo match to remind myself how it worked. Started a war, wasn't checking my other border and lost 3 cities without noticing. Whoops.

What era are you not getting to so I can play up to there. Pre-guns? Like discovering Iron or before that.

Yevrah
11-09-2019, 02:25 AM
Right, worked out what I was doing wrong and it was a combination of three things.

Firstly, building everything, which I now see is folly, secondly not micro managing the science slider and spaffing my treasury up the wall as a result and thirdly not using luxury goods anywhere near enough.

Just won my first game on Regent difficulty.

Ramped it up to Monarch difficulty and in with a shout in this game I think.

Playing as England up against Carthage, the Zulus and the Incans. Into AD 1435 and I've been fighting most of them off for 500 years now, but annoyingly having just discovered steam power we don't have any coal.

The embarresment of losing a space race to the Aztecs on fucking CHIEFTAIN!!!. No fucking way this game was on the easiest difficulty. Sure everyone else was 1000 of years behind but these fuckers were ahead of me. Not only in science Aztecs colonized basically every continent and had mega cities in sizes 15-20. Also had mega armies so they'd probably fuck me in a war too. This was on Civ 1. Something was not right with that game.

Think I'm closing in on winning my first game on Monarch, which would then bring about a game on Emperor where the computer properly cheats.

Monarch victory is done. I was invading the Aztecs with my dozens of tanks while building Nukes (they were doomed) as a cultural victory was achieved.

Love playing as the Egyptians. Their Religious/Industrious/Golden Age from building the Pyramids thing really works well.

I've never won a Civ game outside of the easiest difficulty. I feel like I should get a normal-difficulty win under my belt one day just to have done it.

I prefer 4 more than the others, although I'll always have a sentimental attachment to 2.

I played the Battle Royale mode they put in Civ 6. It's enjoyable but has one massive flaw. Everyone's turn is at the same time so any battle is decided by who clicks faster.

Yevrah

Whacked it up to Emperor last night, which was fucking ridiculous. The Aztecs finished the Pyramids before I'd barely started building them.

Not fun.

Did a 10-hour multiplayer session of Civ 6 on Saturday. No idea when the last time would be I played one game for that long.

Civ 6 is like every other Civ. It eats time by (at the level I play it) being fairly mindless while you click stuff to get stuff and then has a fairly boring endgame. Reasonable for low-maintenance multiplayer while you have a chat. I suspect I will end up doing another couple of sessions and then never play it ever again.

hfswjyr
15-06-2020, 11:36 AM
That's probably my biggest problem with Civ. Once you're part way through the game, it's usually fairly obvious who is going to win and it's just a matter of carrying out the tasks to finish the endgame.

Ian
15-06-2020, 11:45 AM
Yeah Russia declared war on me and for the sake of something to do I stomped them into the ground.

Helped by Faith seeming to be a bit OP when you've got loads of it. I had a bunch of relics / great works and I was generating a couple of hundred faith per turn so even when the Russian cities I'd conquered starting rebelling and generating units to attack me I just kept spamming Faith to create tanks and artillery to explode it all into dust.

The other highlight of that game was AI China declaring war on city-state Hong Kong and getting absolutely monstered by them every time they tried to attack to the point that they ended up suing for peace.
