For about 10 years I thought playing "direct" meant to just play to each other's feet and work your way toward goal, not like... directly to the goal. Even when I played FM back in the day. Used to get so angry at my players.

I thought it meant playing the ball directly to a teammate instead of into space, like having your teammates come to you to look for a pass instead of making runs expecting the pass to connect at another point like a triangle.

On CM97/98 I knew players marked as SW were called sweepers but I thought they played in front of the defence, so had them as defensive midfielders.

At the time it just had like a list of touchline instructions so i'm pretty sure I told my players to both play it short and also direct lol
