Forgot to do this this morning so we're a bit late. Bit late for a Champions League final poll.

Obviously tonight we have Liverpool and Spurs providing an important warm-up game for a number of England players ahead of Team Waistcoat bringing the Nations League home after 0 years of hurt so far.

Also the womens World Cup, which I may actually watch some of as Phil Nev's charisma drives us to a presumably ignonimous exist at some juncture.

This has probably been worse than that famously abysmal Juventus v Milan 2003 final, although given the quality of players on show in that game it's probably still worse in relative terms.

Has there ever been a properly good final of this contested between two sides from the same nation? I remember a Madrid derby one being a bit dull but with a few moments of drama, and I think the Bayern v Dortmund one improved pretty drastically late on, but I can't think of you'd unequivocally describe as a good game of football.

Yeah, in some ways they're in a similar position to Liverpool last season (lamenting a bit of a shit showing and some bad luck in a final after getting there against the odds/logic) but you also get the sense they aren't kicking on from here. This is the end of the road for quite a lot of that team, so they'll have to go some to replace whoever leaves with something better. I suppose at least Pochettino hasn't walked off into the Argentinian sunset.

Selling Coutinho to fund Van Dijk and Allison has to go down as one of the best bits of business ever.

Usually when a club sells a star player for mega money they end up going backwards with the money spent Liverpool really kicked on.

Van Dijk will only get better if Liverpool can get a top class partner for him in the summer. Looking back it's strange no one came in for him sooner, he was fantastic from the moment he made his debut.

Was Coutinho really there star player though? He was good but he was never the best player at Liverpool. When he was there with Sterling, Suarez and Sturridge, he was fourth best and then Firmino, Salah and Mane outshined him as a four again.

I remember being adamant that bringing in Alisson and Van Dijk would not make a difference as I was sure it was a style rather than personnel issue. I'm so happy to be proved wrong.

Lewis
02-06-2019, 01:35 PM
I think Alisson gets too much praise for just not being shit, but Virgil van Dijk is immense. Ten years ago you could watch United field all manner of shit across the rest of the pitch, but if just one of the main centre-backs were playing you knew they would be alright. That's what it's like watching him. If he got a nine month injury next week on international duty Liverpool would have to write all of next season off.

Gray Fox
02-06-2019, 01:58 PM

Seems a weird one that because people have pointed out Rashford running past him but technically it doesn't count because Van Dijk didn't attempt to make a tackle.

I'd give Salah man of the match because a) he scored a penalty in the biggest pressure situation of the game, and b) nobody did anything that was genuinely better than quite good.

One of the worst matches I've seen this season and one of the worst finals ever.

Tottenham's players, if they ever watch that back, will think 'what the hell were we doing?' That's a once in a lifetime chance for most, if not all, of them and they put in the most lethargic performance imaginable.

Gray Fox
02-06-2019, 07:51 PM
It didn't help either team that is was in pretty much Madrid summer, 3 weeks after their last competitive games.

Spurs scoring may have woken our attacking side back up, but in truth maybe 3 shots troubled Alisson and we were comfortable otherwise.

igor_balis
05-06-2019, 06:14 PM
Prem vs champs league is an interesting one and I can't quite figure out which is worth more. I lean towards prem, but that's probably just cus I've been brainwashed by sky and because champions league seems like some intangible abstract concept as a West Brom fan who didn't have BT sport until this season.

I'm not sure if I'm alone, but I basically opted out of caring about it for a few seasons and didn't miss it at all. I remember Atletico lost (?) against Real in a final at some point and Leicester got to the quarters after they won the title (??), whereas I've always been vaguely invested in the league even when my fandom was at its lowest.

Sir Andy Mahowry
05-06-2019, 06:18 PM
I think it largely depends on the club.

I'd imagine that the Champions League is more valuable to Man City whereas the league is viewed higher to Liverpool.

Is the commentary a bit ahead on the Sky coverage of this Portugal game?

phonics
05-06-2019, 07:50 PM
It depends on so much, clubs history, it's league position, past form in the competition, quality of the games etc.

If I were to do a Premier League Years of any year we won, it'd be alot of blurs and '3 months later' whereas 13 years later I can still name where I was, what happened, starting XIs etc of that Champions League run in 2006. Those memories make you want it again. Whereas City fans have spent their most successful period, in their history, getting knocked about in Group Stages of Death due to co-efficient or getting beaten by domestic rivals in the quarters so they pretend they don't care about it. You need the narrative to be written before you care enough to be hurt by it not coming true.

Whereas Liverpool have had the domestic title just out of their grasp for longer than a growing majority of their fans have been alive, so that's what they crave.

Chelsea are probably the most interesting case as they seemingly keep winning whatevers going on. When they win they're convinced they're happy with what wins, when they're miserable and want to burn the club to the ground, they win so they just keep on trucking.

Waffdon

Not in the same way. In South American football they start with the diez and build around them. There's a reason they all shat the bed when Neymar got injured in 2014, they are culturally and emotionally rooted to this concept.

Star worship over here is opportunistic and circumstancial, rather than structural.

None of the great German/Italian/Spanish teams of the past or present have had an Anointed One at their heart. France have more of a tradition of it with Platini, Zidane and I suppose Pogba.

They should change the rule about touching the ball in your own area from a goalkick to make it an indirect freekick or something. In the modern age of fannying about at the back it's an easy way to diffuse a dangerous situation when your pillock 'keeper drops you in it.

Playing it out from the back with Stones, Caveman Harry and Walker is definitely a winning formula, particularly when there's no one to pass it to.

I was going to say £60m+ for De Ligt is a fairly unnecessary gamble for anyone to take, but then, what did City pay for Stones?

I missed the beginning of the second half, was there a reason cancer Kane came on for Rashford? Bit sad for Lingard having that one ruled out. He's generally not very good, but he's an awesome finisher. Took it brilliantly.
