I'm not going to do all the fancy stuff that better thread starters do, but come on, some matches are kicking off.

This season my resolve has been to watch the shittest available match under all circumstances, but not even I can stomach Hungary v Faroe Islands, so it's going to be Albania v Serbia at Scenes Park with commentary by a salivating Dave Farrar.

Ian
08-10-2015, 06:49 PM
You sticking with your shit-football plan, Jim? And if so, which match are you going for?

The lack of a thread is a bit of a shambles, though. #stateofthenewboard

EDIT: Having visited my Weekend football thread next and realising that people were discussing these in there is actually worse. Come on, people.

Poland's odds were so good. Hopefully Scotland can nick a goal for Poland+btts @ 5.5

Jimmy Floyd
08-10-2015, 06:52 PM
The first Serb went in the book after two and half minutes for a haymaking cunt of a tackle.

This whole game and scenario is just a basket case.

Jimmy Floyd
08-10-2015, 06:57 PM
I should have stuck with Budapest, where the fishermen have just taken the lead.

Demerit
08-10-2015, 07:01 PM
Hold on, what is the end goal in watching drab football

Magic
08-10-2015, 07:02 PM
"Scotland not scared of Lewandowski"

Lewandowski 3 minutes. :harold:

John
08-10-2015, 07:04 PM
Brazil and Chile are playing later in what seems like a preposterously early World Cup qualifier, which should be good.

Did you catch any of the earlier qualifiers, Floyd? North Korea and the Phillippines playing out a scoreless draw sounds like a perfect addition to your season's collection.

Foe
08-10-2015, 07:05 PM
It's fine. I didn't want to use the £800 worth of tickets for Euro 2016 I have anyway.

Ian

"Scotland not scared of Lewandowski"

Lewandowski 3 minutes. :harold:

So, what, they should have stayed in the changing room, or...?

Magic
08-10-2015, 07:08 PM
I'm not watching it but they probably shouldn't have given him the time nor the space to score. Scared.

Ian
08-10-2015, 07:18 PM
I'm not watching it but they probably shouldn't have given him the time nor the space to score. Scared.

I didn't see it either but if Scotland had the players to get away with double-marking somebody I might be inclined to agree. As it is they don't and that'd just give somebody else the room to hurt them.

Jimmy Floyd
08-10-2015, 07:24 PM
The referee's just disallowed a Serbian goal for one of their players steaming into the goalkeeper's face while it was looping into the net. Keeper made the most of it but still. He seemed to give the goal and then the 'bloke behind the goal' intervened. Serbia are now seething quite hard.

Ian
08-10-2015, 07:27 PM
James Forrest is such a waste of time. Maybe I don't pay enough attention but I can't ever remember him looking notably decent in the Scotland games I've seen him in. Is he shit-hot in the SPL or something?

Waffdon
08-10-2015, 07:30 PM
Nope. Isn't even a guarantee starter

Ian
08-10-2015, 07:31 PM
Fucking hell!

Waffdon
08-10-2015, 07:32 PM
Properly good goal. Maloney and McArthur for the Celtic duo

Ian
08-10-2015, 07:35 PM
That's a belter of a finish given he sort of ballsed up his first touch. Lol at them thinking Forrest "picked out" the pass there. He missed his intended target by about five yards.

Is McArthur a proper regular for Scotland these days? And if not, why not?

Waffdon
08-10-2015, 07:36 PM
Scotland were coming back into that without even doing anything.

Ian: Scott Brown plays in his position. Its Scott Brown +1. Mental, I know. Not playing arguably your best player.

CJay
08-10-2015, 07:39 PM
Holding on well, hopefully Scotland can continue to hold Poland, too. That gives us at least a shot of going to Poland with 2nd place to go all out for.

Ian

Does Brown offer anything other than Being A Celtic Player? I watch, if not with my full attention, most Scotland games to some extent or another and he just seems to be a gobby dickhead who gets stuck in.

What do Scotland fans think of Anya?

Ian

That finish from Fletcher.

I'm not a Scotland fan but I've rated Anya whenever I've seen him, Demerit.

1-0 Ireland. Does that mean Scotland are out?

Jimmy Floyd
08-10-2015, 08:18 PM
That was eerily reminiscent of the Robbie Keane goal.

How the fuck have Germany not qualified yet?

CJay

...?

Don't you mean you're not a Watford fan?

And Long. What a hit.

Ian
08-10-2015, 08:20 PM
Think that'd be Scotland fucked if the Irish win, Waff, yeah.

Don't you mean you're not a Watford fan?

No, because that wasn't the question.

Davgooner
08-10-2015, 08:20 PM
Quality finish from Long, the little tinker.

All this excitement is a nice way to build-up to England-Estonia.

CJay
08-10-2015, 08:20 PM
1-0 Ireland. Does that mean Scotland are out?

If it stays like this then I think so. Is it head to head or goal difference that settles things?

Jimmy Floyd
08-10-2015, 08:21 PM
It would be classic Scotland to need a win, get one from behind against a superior team, and then be eliminated anyway.

Waffdon
08-10-2015, 08:21 PM
h2h.

I think Scotland would need Ireland to beat Poland.

Demerit
08-10-2015, 08:23 PM
Don't you mean you're not a Watford fan?

And Long. What a hit.

What are you on?

I'm the Watford fan, hence why I wanted people's thoughts on Anya

Ian
08-10-2015, 08:24 PM
Didn't even occur to me that the results as they stand would put Scotland in with a shout of finishing ahead of the Poles.

EDIT: Demerit you've made even more of a mess of that than CJ did my post. All this Anya talk's got everybody all CRAZY.

CJay
08-10-2015, 08:24 PM
Think that'd be Scotland fucked if the Irish win, Waff, yeah.

No, because that wasn't the question.

Oh, so you aren't a Scotland fan? I'm confused. :D

If it's head to head then Ireland will need to beat Poland for Scotland to finish 3rd. As it stands.

Davgooner
08-10-2015, 08:25 PM
Muller. :serious:

Demerit
08-10-2015, 08:27 PM
That Muller miss has confirmed that this is a fix

Jimmy Floyd
08-10-2015, 08:31 PM
I was going to ask if Germany are trying. They have form.

Ian
08-10-2015, 08:32 PM
Oh, so you aren't a Scotland fan? I'm confused. :D

I'm more than happy for them to win but I'm not Scottish. Before you had to pay a fee to be a member or whatever I used to go to Hampden games quite regularly because live football is better than not-live football.

Jimmy Floyd
08-10-2015, 08:35 PM
Serbia have scored the winner right at the end. Never heard a quieter ground in my life.

Ian
08-10-2015, 08:36 PM
The state of that by Scotland.

Jimmy Floyd
08-10-2015, 08:38 PM
I reckon there's genuinely a good chance that Scotland will never play in a tournament again. Where is the chink of light at the end of the tunnel for their football?

Waffdon
08-10-2015, 08:38 PM
Lolz.

The Bruce
08-10-2015, 08:39 PM
Put your mortgages on Ireland conceding now. Usual shit different year.

CJay
08-10-2015, 08:41 PM
Why did they have to concede? :moop: Now we have to win against Poland.

Waffdon
08-10-2015, 08:44 PM
Fucking up two tournaments because they're mentally weak and cannot beat Georgia. They didn't even lose to Ireland/Poland.

Shambolic

Jimmy Floyd
08-10-2015, 08:44 PM
Please let there be a group of England, Wales and both Irelands at the Euros.

Ian

The chink of light is that they often perform well when they shouldn't.

The chink of light turning out to be a train is the fact they can't perform well when they definitely should.

Yeah but it's all just getting worse isn't it? Much like England. The players coming through are worse than the ones they're replacing, over and over again, the club scene is awful, there isn't a big name to inspire anyone like with Wales... it's just terminally rubbish isn't it?

I could be wrong.

Josh Magennis is going ahahhahahahahahahahahahahhahaha. Utter horseshit for Kilmarnock. What a tournament this will be.

Lol at Giggles finally finding something to be partisan about.

Barrie McKay is the great hope of Scottish football.

Ian
08-10-2015, 09:00 PM
Neil McCann is adamant that this is bad luck, as if about five players not doing their job properly at the exact same set-piece is just a bit of misfortune.

I don't think for Scotland it's getting notably better or worse. There was plenty of bollocks in the squad that was beating France and giving Italy a run for their money in "that" qualifying campaign. And yet they still rocked up in Tblisi against a Georgia team who were playing a number of youngsters because their own chances were gone and Scotland got turned over. The mentality just isn't there to play well when they ought to be the favourites. Or to see out results they ought to have secured.

Jesus John if you didn't know that Scotland were my Liverpool at international level by now then you've been under a rock. Of you're going to lol then at least keep up.
The Northy plane going down down over the channel on the way over to France is about the only thing that could improve upon this.

I don't even care if we qualify or not at this stage after that, and I even like the Germans normally.

I know you dislike Scotland, but I've never seen you work up sufficient passion to make yourself 'hoarse' in the past.

And if disinterestedly hoping for Scotland to do poorly is your primary interest in international football it'd be more accurate to describe them as your Spurs.

Just noticed that Albania qualify if they been Armenia on Sunday.

Pretty sure the random game I have a ticket for is going to be them vs Romania or someone.

Jimmy Floyd
09-10-2015, 05:08 AM
Brazil and Argentina have both started their campaigns with 2-0 defeats, the former away in Chile which is more understandable, the latter at home to Ecuador which is a joke result. Aguero was carted off after 24 minutes too

Over in Africa, Ethiopia induced the initial lol by losing to Sao Tome and Principe, which is barely even a place and has a population 490 times smaller.

Wales are as good as there, they need 3 points from Bosnia and Andorra I think.

Toby

Let's not pretend Scotland wouldn't beat Northern Ireland if they had been drawn together in a group. They'd get smashed by Wales, obviously, but there's some sort of bogey team thing going on there recently.

That Scotland had the better of Ireland and matched Poland in the respective head to heads makes it all the more depressing that they've lumped out. Georgia was what blew out, but Germany also deserve a massive fuck you.

Magic
09-10-2015, 08:12 AM
Doesn't matter worth a fuck if we can't beat the shite in the group.

The World Cup is bloody hard to qualify for compared to the Euros now, although I guess bonny have been handed a lifeline by getting thrown into England's quadrennial Group of Shite. Slovakia and Slovenia will no doubt have superteams packed with world class players by then.

Never been a fan but he's down the same path as big Jack and became honourary Irish after that one  :hail:

He looks like he actually gives a fuck again too in the games of late, which is something I haven't seen from him in years. His whole demeanour was stale and washed out for a long time. Though that's probably what Villa can do to anyone.

Lee
09-10-2015, 08:59 AM
O'Neill these days is well suited to managing a team of shit players above their ability but not having any money to waste. He only went to shit when he was given big money; his scouting network doesn't extend beyond lower league British who try really hard. Which was fine for Leicester City in the late 1990s but isn't going to cut it at the top end of any decent league. He's a motivator too, rather than a tactician. Ireland seems a perfect fit.

John Arne
09-10-2015, 09:28 AM
Don't Ireland go out if they don't beat Poland away? Surely they aren't qualifying. Or do the reach the playoffs?

By World Cup failure I do of course mean World Cup qualification failure.

Although England's record in qualifiying is generally brilliant, so we could probably have a bit more confidence in them not chucking points to Slovakia and Slovenia. The cunts.

England are probably more likely to do well in a tournament playing like Leicester City (hard-working, pace on the counter attack), and with players like Jamie Vardy (hard-working, pace on the counter attack). They'd still be pretty shit but you know

I know Holland have gone turd but how likely is it that both teams will score?

Not unlikely. Blind decided to select a bunch of Ajax youth players to bolster our defense, so it's complete and utter shit. Our attack is pretty good though, so we should expect to score a goal or two.

Also, the idea that we have gone turd is all fine and well, but you have to take into account that we have had an absurd amount of injuries over the last year and a ridiculous amount of bad luck (or actually lack of experience has been doing us in). We don't deserve to qualify, but we should be okay in a couple of years again as our young ones improve. Not likely we're going to be world class again any time soon though, but we should return to being competitive at least.

Four Premiership players, one of the best strikers in the Bundesliga, and the same goalkeeper as the world cup. Iceland are pissing it with a load of twats from the Swedish league and the Championship propped up by Gylfi Sigurdsson, who even now is probably about the same as a past it Sneijder.

I don't think national teams are ever as likely to downgrade as leagues are. Only example I can really think of is Hungary, and they were last relevant in the 50s. Scotland too, maybe? Holland are big though, it will never happen

Toby
10-10-2015, 09:56 PM
Scotland definitely did, albeit more through others catching up than them ever being truly good. If you look at historic ELO rankings I think they were still too 10 into the 1960s. Probably easily forgotten due to their complete lack of success in competitions, but then as with England that was as much an administrative fuck up as anything else in the case of the first few World Cups.

Brazil is turning out some real shite these days, but I suspect they'll never be truly "terrible." Serbia, perhaps; they look an absolute shambles these days, and the political mess isn't helping. Also, you have to figure Turkey are somewhere near the brink, especially if their best players continue to be German.

I wouldn't count Serbia or Turkey as having ever been powerful sides. Turkey have only ever been to two World Cups (1954, 2002). Yugoslavia was at one stage, but not since the breakup; it'd be crazy to imagine how good a combined Yugoslav side would have been in 1998 though. Like you, I just can't see Brazil ever being knocked out of the top bracket of sides.

I'm a touch worried that Italy might be the most likely to move down a peg or two.

Luca
11-10-2015, 04:30 AM
The trouble with putting Italy in that lot is that we have that Brazil-esque quality of always making it to the party and somehow, the nonsense of the last two World Cups aside, shitting our way out of groups and through the knockouts (see: Euro 2012, which I'm fairly certain broke Mario Balotelli). Supposing Conte stays on after the Euros, we've got a decent manager as well (remember that the same Euro 2012 happened under the guise of Prandelli, who is about as shit-for-brains as they come).

I wasn't sure how wide the parameters were for "major countries." Were Austria ever really there? A token World Cup third place in the 50s, but otherwise they were middling, and have made one Euros in the past 50 years. If we're talking Top 15 of the (albeit bogus) rankings, and assuming the Dutch have already been mentioned, you could make a case for England. They've walked qualification so far, but they were easily in the worst group of the lot. Once Rooney and Carrick leave, they've got bottlers in attack and a suspect back line (TABLOID HYPE aside).

It'll never be the South Americans, anyways, because favelas.

ItalAussie
11-10-2015, 06:37 AM
The Austrians were probably the world's best team for most of the '30s. It was WWII which messed them up.

My worries with Italy are structural, rather than based around any individual. You can make deep runs every now and then, but if you have structural problems (a league which can't quite keep up with the top ones, declining quality of youth, etc.), then that'll show through eventually. I don't think this is a case of "who has a crappy lot coming through in 10 years?" so much as "who has underlying problems with no easy solution that will eventually tell".

I'm looking forward to the Euros already. It isn't as though the smaller countries are filled with players not playing a good level of football regularly so I don't see that we're losing much quality in exchange for added variety. It isn't as though the big nations aren't qualifying either; only the Dutch are struggling and one of the major countries fucking up in qualification isn't that abnormal anyway.

My plan is to spend a weekend over in France during the tournament, preferably south, so I can sit in the sun and enjoy the atmosphere in one of the fanzones in a host city. These are two pretty weak sides. I think Ireland might take it (including 2-2, which is now very much in the game of course) on account of their greater mental strength. Poland have an undeserved reputation by association with Greater Prussia.

Have Ireland got injuries at centre back? Keogh is an awful player.
