Anyone tried this?

Surströmming (pronounced [ˈsʉ̟ːˌʂʈrœmːɪŋ], Swedish for "sour herring"), is fermented Baltic Sea herring that has been a staple of traditional northern Swedish cuisine since at least the 16th century.

There are lots of videos on Youtube citing this as the worst food ever.

Here's a sample:

Part of me thinks it's fish in a tin, how bad can it be?

For those of you that have tried it, is it that bad? And for those that haven't, what's the worst food you've ever eaten?

Our countrys greatest failure as a nation is not banning that shit.

My dad and granddad loves to have it as an event in late summer, and despite them sitting 50m+ away eating it, it still stinks like hell. Vile.

Never eaten it. The smell is just horrible.

I think you should order some, Yev, and film it.

Aside from the odd meatball and of course the classic English pub lunch, northern Europe fails at food pretty badly. Even in Germany all the good stuff is from the south.

:nodd:

Never tried this stuff. Not sure what the most disgusting thing I've ever eaten is. Maybe an oyster. I spat that out again, it was pretty horrible. I like them when they're cooked though.

I read a thing ages ago where a bloke tried this, Hakari, and a few other rotten things and he had this down as comfortably the worst, but I can't remember what it was called.

Hakari tastes of pure ammonia, apparently.

Remember reading it on the old board, is this it?

They had a tin of it on QI once, but had been told they weren't allowed to open it as they'd have to have the whole studio deep-cleaned to get the smell out.

Anyone here tried Durian?
It reeks to high heaven, buy actually tastes alright.
I'd be up for trying this if a Swede sends me some.

I really want to have a go at some of this filthy northern stuff. I didn't get to try putrified shark or rams' bollocks in Iceland so I'm determined to find something awful in Norway in February. What shit do Norwegians eat?

That looks like the one, and I remember a few of the individual passages, but I remember it as being longer ago than March last year, and as having more than just those two on it.

Lol at the idiot in the comments suggesting that you rinse the rotten fish off and stick it in a wrap with some potatoes and creme fraiche. If you're going to that trouble just have some fresh fish in it.

They do Lutefisk in Norway, which is fish soaked in lye, but it's never mentioned in the same way as any of the properly horrid things.

My cousin (who fancies the 'Asian way of life') went to stay on some crappy Hong Kong island with his little Chinese mate's family over the summer, and it sounds like their old nan (like ninety and still running the house) basically trolled the shit out of them all every day with manky fish and other filth. He was gutted. And the humidity gave him a load of spots. Stupid twat.

John Arne, have you eaten those duck embryo (Balut) things?

Coincidentally I was looking at the price for beaver meat (can't remember why, probably looking for porn) and found this site: http://www.exoticmeatmarkets.com/

Who's looking to buy otter meat? :cab:

Does eating it actually make you ill for a bit, or is just the vomiting caused by a gag reflex for those unaccustomed to the foul smell/taste?

I have. It's not too bad if you avoid direct eye contact. Bit of pepper and mint leaves and it goes down quite well.

A friend bought some Durian flavoured boiled sweets back from Thailand recently. Genuinely horrific, even in sweet form. Smelled like wet dead dog, and the taste was worse.

The texture of Durian is probably more offensive than the smell.

I've never tried any of these fermented fish dishes. Rollmops are a big enough waste of perfectly good herring without getting in to any of the more serious depravity the Scandis indulge in.

Today at work the company who sits down the hall in the building next to us had a Surströmming party. The whole office reeked so bad

It supposedly tastes way different from the smell. Just really really salty. It's the smell that makes people gag.

Never had it either, some people like to rave about it.

The way you're meant to eat is though is some hard bread with sour cream, a bit of boiled potato, maybe some chives or chopped red onion and then a tiny fucking sliver of that shite on top. Which essentially just makes it into a pugnant kind of spice, sort of like an Anchovie x10 or something.

You're definitely not meant to take huge bites of it.
But yeah, I haven't had it so I don't know too much more.
