In this thread, we share our favourite thing of the week. It can be a song or album, a goal, an anecdote--anything, really.

I'll kick it off with Toby being obsessed with this straightforwardly charming pop-rock album called 'Future Me Hates Me' by The Beths.

It'd be fairly sad to be inundating a WhatsApp group enough with a song that it'd class as obsessed.

I tried out haggis pizza a couple of weeks ago. Not worth doing again, but it was alright.

This week hasn't been the best, but I quite like that I've realised I can get away with being extremely direct with annoying people at work. I know its a bit dickheadish, but when I'm tired I don't want to hear about the sad, boring lives of colleagues.

Smashing City will cheer me up, though.

Cheers all. As a teacher there were a fuck ton of names I was ruling out right away (‘L’ names are generally typically little shits - Lucas, Lewis, Louis, along with your Jordan’s and Cameron’s edit: and BRANDON’S - those kids are cunts) and it was difficult enough to find a name we both liked (although oddly we had a girls name picked out from pretty much the point of a positive test). His name is Ewan.

Given that my name is Ian and my dad’s name is Maurice those were both kind of ruled out.

I’ve been teaching for 5 years. I’ve thought about packing it in numerous times over the years but for one thing I can’t imagine what else I could do (that would pay me the equivalent wage) and for two, is miss being in the classroom. There is something quite addictive to it, even if some classes make you wonder why you bother(not a problem you’d have teaching English as a foreign language though, as presumably those people want to be there and want to learn, not to be a constant source of irritation)

I've just heard a story recounted about Sandra Day O'Connor, the first woman ever appointed to the US Supreme Court. Her husband was in declining health, so she checked him into a nursing home and visited him every day. Over the months and years, his Alzheimer's caused him to forget who she was, and see her as just a nice lady who came to see him. Eventually he forgot he was married at all, and started a relationship with another resident of the home. He'd excitedly tell the 'nice lady', his wife, about his little lunch dates with this woman, and talk about how glad he was to have someone. When asked how the fuck she was coping with hearing that every day she said 'I love him, and he's happy. That's all that matters.'

I love that story, as unfeasibly sad as it is.

I saw a documentary a while back that mirrored that pretty much word for word. I think it might have been Louis Theroux, but they were English.

Anyway, yeah, Dementia / Alzheimer's is fucking terrifying. When my mum was nearing the end (it was brain cancer rather than either of those), 19 year old Spikey came down stairs one morning to find that she had pulled her IV from her arm, was bleeding, and was desperately searching her knitting bag for a solution. She had no idea what she had done, who I was, or what was going on.

If I ever find myself in one of those situations, I am pitching myself off of something very, very tall.

I recently spent a night with my gran during which she had absolutely no idea who I was. Not quite as bad as the night she thought I was my dad for an hour, before remembering he was dead then weeping like he'd just died all over again, but getting her to take her medication off what to her was a complete stranger wasn't easy.

Not much scares me, but that frightens the shit out of me.

I've mates whose relatives have gone that way when their minds have gone too, but that somehow makes it more terrifying to me. It could make you think you're eighteen again, it could make you forget everyone you've ever known, it could leave your memory intact but completely change your personality. You're aware when you get the diagnosis, obviously, then it's a waiting game to see exactly how it's going to frazzle your mind, then you're the only one who doesn't know about it.

It's not something I'll have to worry about myself, but I completely agree that if I did, I'd use one of my lucid moments to do myself in.

My favourite thing this week is the discovery that amongst all the mostly tiny discounts and competitions I'm never going to win the Vodafone app's MyRewards bit sometimes just gives away free things. Early this week it was a Gregg's sausage roll and today it was some sweets from Hotel Chocolat.

Smashing.

Went for a walk on the old railway line, cute muntjac deer wandered out of the bushes. Noticed me but perceptively didn't find me very threatening and carried on pottering around about fifty feet from me. I know they're pretty common but never seen one around here in all the years I've lived here.

Yeah it's a painting. I started off trying to copy a picture I loaded online of the moon and the ocean as a template but found as I got midway though I pretty much discarded it and mine took on a life of its own. Easier to hold a paint brush than a pencil as I'm less likely to lock up, at least with my fucked up right wrist.

I did enjoy the gyppos in Swansea. They'd keep to themselves but they'd come down on the weekends to race the horses on the beach. They wouldn't use main roads to get there and would travel on them like scooters, buzzing up and down the tiny side streets no matter the hills. They were absolutely massive beasts unlike the ones my aunty trained, you could tell they were working horses.
