What speeches in films do you think are the best?
Doesn't have to be a typical war speech like the epic Independence Day one below, it could be just a significant monologue performed in front of others (read: Rutger Hauer from Blade Runner) but, I mean you make the distinction here.

Well that'll be me watching Independence Day again tonight.
Band of Brothers has a couple of belters, but the St Crispin's one loses points for being a quote and the German one could do with being a bit longer.
There's a cracker in Battlestar Galactica, but YouTube doesn't have it.

I love Bill Hicks - it's just a ride speech. It's not from a film but it's nice. Other than that I like when Raoul Duke is talking about the the acid movement in fear and loathing.

I'm still a sucker for that moment in Gladiator when he takes his helmet off and reveals his face.

Bernie Mac pretty much won the Oscar purely for that scene.
Bernie. :(

For any reasonable definition of "great", this has to be right up near the top:

Also, the Armageddon speech is better than the Independence Day one. Not least because of all the stereotypes listening to it.

Will Smith is such an arse for not doing the sequel.

There was a sequel on the cards?
Anyway, it would have likely been a bit of a disappointment, kind of hard to top that, you know?
It's coming out next year, Maz. Basically everyone from the original but Will Smith has signed on and Roland Emmerich will be directing.
The Battlestar Galactica one I couldn't find a video for.
"Look around you. Take a good look at the men and women that stand next to you. Remember their faces, for one day you will tell your children, and your grandchildren, that you served with such men and women as the universe has never seen. And together, you accomplished a feat that will be told and retold down through the ages. And find immortality as only the gods once knew. I'm proud to serve with you. The dignity and integrity of the human race rides with us. Good hunting."

Robin Williams basically won the Oscar for that scene.
That's what I came here to post.
There's a bit of a limit on roles that can naturally get away with a protracted monologue - I guess a therapist is one of them.

That Network speech is so much worse when you see it in context. Real let down that film.

I always thought this one was quite epic. I know the music and horns and shit are half of what does it, but still, it's a little goosebumpy sometimes.

Ital has got it right. The whole thing is infinitely quotable.
"PUT. THAT COFFEE. DOWN!"
On a related note, I always thought Al Pacino's speech as Ricky Roma is really underrated in this movie. It's so vague and meandering but it's totally mesmerising.

I second Benny's vote for Al Pacino's speech from Any Given Sunday.
Another fave:

Seeing Daniel Kaluuya on the cast list for Sicario has reminded me of another favourite, his speech in an episode of Black Mirror. Only the audio is available on YouTube, but even from that you can tell it's a fucking thundering bit of acting.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tY5It0jnD6M
Context, he's in front of a near future version of a talent show panel which essentially runs the place.
Came in to post the GGR monologue, but Ital beat me to it. It really is phenomenal.
