Out of all the posters on TTH we must have at least a few genuine talents out there. So go on, what are you really good at?

:cheer:

I prefer the titling error being "What, are you really good?" over missing your preposition because it would present itself as a moral inquisition.

I'll tell you what I'm not really good at: making thread titles.

There is one amazing super cool thing I can do. I take both my hands, and have the thumb of my left hand sticking out and the little finger of the right hand sticking out, and nothing else. Then I switch it so it is the thumb of my right hand and the little finger of my left hand. I can switch between the two at rapid pace. Not impressed? You cunts try it, then you'll understand.

I suppose I'm really good [at] History. I actually have a decent claim (or will when my book is published) to being the world's leading expert on one very specific area of it, which is kind of lol/tragic given that I don't have a job.

When did you get interested in History, Lewis? This year is the first year I've genuinely enjoyed it (because we're reading actual historians rather than textbooks), and at this point I could definitely see majoring in it, though I'm not sure I will.

Professionally - analysis, eloquence and assertiveness.

Outside of work, none of those things. Pretty good with women, specifically convincing them I'm more interesting than I appear in an arty liberal-ish way.

I've always liked just knowing stuff, so forever I suppose; but History as an academic subject is a bit shit. Ninety per cent of what I've ever had to formally study (at school and university) was and is boring, which was why I spent all of my time not doing very well but reading about the stuff I'm now good at.

I'd like to think that I'm pretty good at being a "big-picture" thinker, for whatever that's worth, and I'm handy when you throw me some numbers and ask me to analyze and make sense of them.

That's me, though not just numbers - probably less so. Making sense of complex structures is a key part of my job, so it makes sense that I fell into this line of work through looking to apply that ability.

Do you think I'd get just as much out of reading good history books on my own time as I would from actually doing it in school?

Lewis
07-10-2015, 01:11 AM
Definitely.

I'm conflicted to some extent. I don't know if I could recommend a History degree to somebody, because most of it will be boring; but doing the PhD was really brilliant and stimulating (lol), as is pissing about with stuff I've half-written now. Obviously it's about finding out what you like (and realising sooner that laziness doesn't help).

It's kind of ironic that as one of the most right wing posters here, you're also probably by far the biggest "sponger" :henn0rz:

I wouldn't say I'm really good at anything. I'm pretty good at a lot of things but I haven't found anything I like enough and am good enough at to specialise in. Procrastination, maybe, but 70% of the world can probably match me.

I'm stupidly good at languages. I can speak four foreign languages pretty well despite barely ever practising, and I've picked up a bit of Korean just by osmosis. Other English people in the office have been there for 15 years and don't know a single word.

I should do it for a living really, but that basically means teaching, which is rubbish.

Organic chemistry, for me.

A lot of my classmates at university just couldn't wrap their head around it but I guess it just came naturally to me. Taught it a bit privately after graduating and now I'm fiddling about with it at work so at least I'm applying it.

Not sure about languages. I guess it might be a mix of being able to pick it up and the complete immersion I experienced. It's always a bit good when people just naturally assume I can't speak it and when I do the shock is genuine.

Interests and at work, I.T related things, pretty much could stand up a domain and distribute software, group policies and active directory.
Got a good logical mind if I apply myself.

Generally knowledge about a lot of things, most of it useless thought. Pub quizes I am good at.
I am pretty arty if I wanted to be, havent had time to do anything about it.

Really good at statistics and math in general. I know an insane amount of geography, am pretty good at chess and tennis. Can also smoke a lot of weed which is really the most important out of all of these. When it comes to drinking I'm fucked up after 6-7 drinks though which is not so impressive.

Spoonsky
07-10-2015, 04:48 AM
What does "drinks" even mean there? I feel like the size of a single drink can vary so much.

mugbull
07-10-2015, 04:58 AM
In the United States, one "standard" drink contains roughly 14 grams of pure alcohol, which is found in: 12 ounces of regular beer, which is usually about 5% alcohol. 5 ounces of wine, which is typically about 12% alcohol. 1.5 ounces of distilled spirits, which is about 40% alcohol.

It is actually standardized. A drink is essentially a shot, or a can of beer.

Medieval (mainly Crusading Era) History was my field of choice.

Outside of that, I have a knack for picking up new systems really quickly. Plenty of people at work dont know many systems like I do despite them having 10 years on me.

I'm far from religious, I just know right and wrong. I know how to write these songs; I know how to light these bongs; I know how to rip thongs; and I'm pretty good at beer pong.

Honestly though, I'm the best I know of at getting drunk.

Drums I guess, though I haven't even played in about 3 years.

I'm good at money management, planning stuff, projects, working around issues. I reckon I'm good at karting only when leading from the front as I managed to win by so much the guy in second thought he came first. Couldn't overtake for shit though.

I'm good at restoring things (antique furniture) and fixing odd bits here and there (because I'm too tight to buy replacements).

Generally not very good at D.I.Y though I'm still learning.

I don't think I'm really good at anything. I'm okay at enough stuff to get me by in life. I used to write very well but I've lost that and the enjoyment I got from it, mainly due to the formulaic manner I'm required to write stuff for work now. I should get back into writing for pleasure but can't be arsed.

I'm really good at picking up the pronunciation part of a language when I start learning it. Although I then tend to get lazy, which is why I'm only fluent in English.
I'm great at remembering useless facts, like birthdays, capitals and flags.
I can roll/move my eyes around faster than anyone I know, which seems to entertain babies/toddlers to no end.

Basically, nothing useful. Like most here, I'm too lazy and probably not smart enough to become an expert in anything.

Benny

Actually, I've got a good ear for determining languages, and I don't mean the obvious ones I mean the thick European ones from the Baltics and Eastern European etc.

Jimmy Floyd

I struggle with Eastern European languages, Russian aside. A lot of them don't sound like how they look on paper.

I'm not sure why I've got a knack for it, I think it's from watching dodgy football streams when I used to be bang into that stuff. Certain words trigger in my head and I can (usually) distinguish them apart.

I'm good at picking up music instruments. I'm really good at drumming but can pick up anything quickly albeit I'm not a master of any other instrument I play.

In a business sense i have a basic but brilliant skill of been a great talker. I'm noticed because of my confidence in any situation. Put me in front of a crowd of 200 and I'll make the most boring shit proposition sound like it was written on tablets of rock passed down from god.

You'd be surprised how far you can go having zero talent but being able to talk confidently and been known.

Thats a great talent to have, not many people can do that with such aplomb.

i'm pretty good at creating a relaxed working atmosphere, but still maximizing people around me. Also, in a team environment, I'm pretty good at knowing where each individual would have the best impact according to their talents.

Give me a one on one chat with a stranger and I'll be an absolute anxious mess. Give me a room of 50-100 and I'm at ease. I guess at that point there's so many of them you're not micro analysing every last thing you say and their reaction to it.

Serj
07-10-2015, 12:14 PM
I'm almost the exact opposite. In a one on one talk, I'll not exactly be exuding confidence, but it's normal and comfortable. Put me in front of 10+ people and I'll second-guess and over-analyze every word I'm saying and turn into a hyperventilating mess.

Since clearly our standard of what constitutes being 'really good' at something is really low I will say that I am a beast at logic. Also, I am 'really good' at teaching, at playing it cool, and at explaining complicated shit in a simple way.

I also think I'm really good at photography, though obviously that's more subjective.

From a professional point of view, I can very quickly identify what's wrong with a piece of design and what needs doing to fix it - even down to the tiniest misalignment.
