I have a friend who is a very high achiever. She graduated with distinction from the London School of Economics, has presented to the UN on issues of public health, and so on and so forth.

She told me that she is launching an app. The app provides consumers a 5-10% discount on major chains across North America, and a percentage of spending goes towards the company behind the app. The app has been in development for four years and has deals with companies like Bed Bath and Beyond, Home Depot, and Uber.

Initially I was impressed that my friend had managed to make these deals, and I assumed that she was going through another round of fundraising for her startup. I figured that if I threw in something like $500 and lost it, no harm done--but if the app were to be somewhat successful, then I could make up the investment through dividends or share price.

Nope. She left me a thirty-minute voicemail, most of it read off a script. The app has been in development for four years. It's run by some dude called Ken Dunn, who is notorious in the multi-level marketing/pyramid scheme world. Your portion of income increases based upon the number of people you recruit to the "core team" before the app launches. She doesn't know the name of the app, hasn't met the owners, and doesn't know how many people are involved. She then talked about spirituality, energy and Tony Robbins. I really don't want to know how much money she's put in or how much time she's spent doing free labour for the owners.

What the fuck? Have any of you encountered otherwise-reasonable people suckered in by MLM?

You say all this but when she's sunning it in her Bahaman mansion riding enough BBC to make Mia Khalifa cry two years down the line then who's the loser eh

I posted it and we are now rich.

Multi level marketing is complete batshit that I don't know how people buy into it. It's all selling this dream of self attainment and changing the world when really it's you selling average health supplements overpriced.

It depends how early you get in and how closely it resembles a pyramid scheme, I think

One of my friends from uni is a mechanical engineer and works for Rolls Royce earning close to 6 figures. His wife sits on her arse all day wasting thousands upon thousands of pounds of their money with these pyramid schemes. Every few months she's posting about a new one on facebook all day with posts that are clearly copy/pasted and templated memes. She must've gone through about 10 of them so far, it's been going on for years.

I saw them about a year ago, and we were talking about work, and she hilariously called herself a "business owner". Not long after, I heard from a friend-of-a-friend that she's now on her "final" scheme, and if this doesn't turn a profit then he's pulling the plug and no longer financing her. She's done about 3 new ones since then.

There is probably a distinction to be made between serious illness things and the low-lives set on degrading the food supply.

Oooh--I forgot to mention this.

She claims to have heavy metal poisoning, and I'm willing to bet at this point she thinks it's her dental fillings.

So yes, she's definitely ill and is coping with it through life coaches, mentors, spiritual vibrations and MLM.

At least she's releasing an app, not selling products that alter your body's pH level to kill cancers (and the rest of you).

If it's not evident, I'm equal parts bewildered and sad for her.

I would question any life coach/mentor who sits idly by as someone manages their madness with 'spiritual vibrations'.

The knife scheme was the weirdest. Several years ago I’d have people hitting me up every few months asking me to sell a set of knives to all my friends. Who would want that even under legit circumstances?
