Babe Ruth was great at both but even he gave up pitching early in his career to focus on hitting.

Both. There is at least a league table to give the endless games context (unlike JAMODIs). Being a closed shop league it is ultimately quite cyclical though (though less so than the other US sports), and a weirdly high proportion of the fan debates are centred around which individuals should win certain end of season awards, and most confusingly of all, who should go into the 'Hall of Fame', a concept which is both heavily regulated and treated with deadly, earnest seriousness.

There is a weird paradox at the heart of it though in that over 162 games you pretty much find out exactly who the best teams are and by how much, and yet they then have the playoffs (culminating in the World Series) over just a few games which culturally decide success and failure.
