Are you fucking serious? Midday again. Yedlin's back in training but doesn't travel so that'll mean Manquillo's in. We could've held on to Lazaar for full-back cover but it appears we're sending him to Genoa.

EDIT: Not liking how this has started.

John

Why are you kicking off about it being an early start? If it was 3 you wouldn't be seeing it.

Everything about this game feels very Championship.

It's dumb but a 3:00pm kick-off gives me time to do some stuff in the morning, rather than rush shit before the match.

Newcastle have been shocking here and should really be down to 9.

This could easily be a championship game between two teams battling for the playoffs. Pretty poor all around. The Cardiff Murphy looks a bit tidy though, but that's probably because maquillo and subsequently haden are the poorest full backs he'll face all season.

He was fairly obviously losing the plot at least by his second stint at Chelsea. I don't watch enough Spanish football to have been able to detect if he was clearly on the way at Real and it was just being masked by working for a club who are also nutters / had Ronaldo.

Well the players are obviously not playing for him so we may as well end the experiment. The shit houses win again and get to have another stay of execution under a new manager. Zidane would be the type of Galactico, Ed will cream over and do everything he can to get. And likely fail (unless he's actually interested).

The club is rotten and it all boils to Fergie falling out over coolmore and the horses. Ultimately the owners are only interested in lining their pockets and keeping the money rolling in. Chinless wonder Woodward is all about improving the revenue and thinking he's a football genius. Insecure cowardly prick.

The players make zero effort which isn't just coaching, it's actual pride in doing your job. I can see why mourinho wanted to keep fellani as he actually tries (despite his limitations). Constantly bottom of sprint stats and km run in each fixture. Don't create chances, don't have the ability to pass.

The only consolation with Zidane if that happened was the players would want to play for him. But it's not going to happen so welcome Carrick for the rest of the season.

Constantly bottom of sprint stats and km run in each fixture.

You can't sum up a teams issues in one statistic but, United covered the least distance as a team last year after averaging 106km per game. This can be explained if you take into account a deep lying team with a compact shape making sure everyone has to cover less space until you look at the Brighton game, 97km covered. Teams that have a man sent off in the first half regularly beat that...

To put in perspective the average stat I lead with, 6 teams beat Uniteds total distance covered after 22 games.

Good day in the North Bank today, that Welbz goal paid my ticket back. Making a commitment to get to one game a month until my season ticket comes up on the waiting list.

Good to get a win on the board under Emery, and there were pleasing moments and a couple of good performances, but areas of concern remain. Cech should never be letting in that opener, and I can only think he’s starting due to Leno being rusty with his English at the moment, but given the two centre halves both sprechen de deutsch, I’m not sure why that’s such an issue.

Mustafi was as solid as I’ve seen him, which was heartening, and in general he and Sokratis did well, but the midfield and full backs continued to give West Ham too much space to burst forward 20 yards at a time. Looked a lot better with Lacazette up top and Auba our wide, gives much more of a focal point with Lacazette more willing to play with his back goal and more movement from Auba in the wide channels than Iwobi or Ozil will offer. Would be surprised if he doesn’t give it a go more often.

Former is spot on.

The latter is of course to do with van Dijk but also Klopp finally realising his £14m left back was better than Moreno three months into last season, along with the emergence of Alexander-Arnold. They’re a much better outfit as a whole.

David Silva is amazing watching him live. The Wolves vs Man City game was great. Wolves played decent enough though Man City should have won. They his the post more than twice. Wolves are really missing Douglas. I still don't know why he was sold to leeds who are domating with his I'm the team. Johnny Otto at left wing back is terrible. Best left back in the championship and he’s one of the few Wolves jettison when they get to the top flight, and one of the better players Scotland can call upon at a time when their best two players are also left backs. We can play all the attractive football we want, the most important thing so far is the 3 clean sheets.

Tonights game especially is one that the old Liverpool would have conceded at the end. I think it'll take one or two of them before the defence gets its full confidence. But both full-backs are flying and Gomez is looking very solid in along Van Dijk.

The Alisson save you'd expect him to make, but I'm just glad he didn't flap it into the net.

On an only very remotely related note: do you guys ever wonder how pro footballers (Rashford amongst others comes to mind here) can occasionally or sometimes even often fuck up corners so badly?

I get that you need to apply some amount of power to the ball, but it's not like it's a free-kick you're trying to score. Hitting a corner seems to me like just about the easiest thing you ever have to do on a football pitch, as even on the higher levels it feels like most of the time they just whack it towards a specific area of the box anyway.

Just how can it be that they can fuck it up so often (proportionally to the simplicity of the task, anyway)?!

Midfielders: Alan Judge (Brentford), Jeff Hendrick (Burnley), Conor Hourihane (Aston Villa), Alan Browne (Preston North End), Shaun Williams (Millwall), David Meyler (Reading), Harry Arter (Cardiff City*), Daryl Horgan (Hibernian), Callum O'Dowda (Bristol City), James McClean (Stoke City)

I notice it a LOT when I do casual 5-8(ish) a side kickarounds, and have done since time immemorial.

Corner on a smallish pitch, people constantly try to whip it in and smash it out for a throw in. Even good players. I'm generally pretty rubbish but I'm shit hot at corners relatively speaking cus I just weakly sand wedge them towards my teammates. I mean I've only assisted about three goals from corners in years of playing footy but that's pretty much half the amount of goals I've ever seen from corners in games I've played.

I think his shitty way of treating players explains it. They've had enough of him.

Shaw has been excellent this game. He's clearly still always had it in him. I'm sure a manager who hadn't acted a total cunt towards him would have got that out of him about a season ago. Martial looked a potential world beater two seasons ago. Now he's basically frozen out with Mourinho actively trying to bin him off in the summer. It's a mess.

But like I said, with a decent man manager he'd have shown that ages ago. Part of being good is knowing how to handle different players. If Mourinho had become manager just after we signed Ronaldo I bet he'd have had a public feud with him sold him in his second season at the club.

So either he's sending them out there to walk around like dickheads, and take up whatever positions they want, or they're taking it upon themselves to do so. It was the same with Moyes. If nothing else, he can organise a team. But then he took chips off the menu and they all turned into mongs.

I honestly believe that at this point we have an excellent squad and with a manager who got the best out of them we'd do great.

Really?

Other than De Gea (and most of the rivals have competent alternatives) how many United players would get into the City team? Or the Liverpool one? Or even Spurs? Any? Chelsea? The mercurial Paul Pogba? That's probably about it, and considering his performances half the time, even that is possibly pushing it.

I now that's a crappy comparison because if you have 10 players who are 5% worse then you aren't 10/11ths worse as a team, but this United squad is pretty average at best and has been treading water (remarkably well) for a good few years.

Getting done 3-0 at home is fairly serious business.

That's the thing though, whenever you see or hear/read anything about him on a personal level he seems a complete legend. It's his football manager persona which is hateful.

He should definitely go to one of Bobby Robson's former clubs next. Either complete the circle and go to Barcelona, or win something with Newcastle. I reckon his 'outdated methods' can probably still work, just not at United (even though they sort of have).

Mazuuurk
28-08-2018, 08:21 AM
Yesterday it looked to me like United were playing with some sort of last ounce of borrowed energy. They started out pretty well I thought and kept winning back the ball and dictating the game, making a lot of runs, etc. Phil Jones was doing OK in defence - all up until he didn't when Kane scored, and after that United seemed a lot like a punctured tyre or something. It's like they are all playing driven by fear of failure rather than strive for success - and as soon as one little adversity hit them, it all collapsed.

So for whatever tactical astuteness that Mourinho may have, I guess it still doesn't work if all your players basically are completely terrified all the time.

Looking at Lindelöf for instance, there really is a palpable difference to how he seems to carry himself when playing for Sweden compared to how he plays for United.
