France to fold like Argentina and Croatia to win the thing.

I can't see any way Croatia win this. Denmark and Russia could have put them out and England dominated them in the first half (albeit they deserved the win in the end). They're just not that good.

I don't understand this narrative that England thought they'd steamroll them. Where has this come from? It's clearly not true - the general consensus seemed to be that we'd get overrun in midfield and would need to make the most of set pieces.

Everyone was just looking at Sunday.

If Ireland are ever in a World Cup semi-final against Croatia, you will be thinking about Sunday. Why wouldn't you think about Sunday? Sunday is everyone's dream. Sunday is why any of the nations enter in the first place.

Roy Keane has no joy in his heart, he knows nothing.

Roy Keane is just a twat, it's what made him the player he was and what makes him both a terrible pundit and coach. They're a strange bunch in the People's Republic of Cork anyway.

If we ever make a world cup again I'll be too shocked to look at anything, we've well had our day. Everyone was still looking at Sunday with yesterday as a mere formality though, probably rightly in fairness.

Croatia are far more suited against teams that will open up. I think France will take it because their midfield can actually match Croatia’s but it’ll be a lot closer than folk are making out.

Croatia will 'be the better side' for half an hour or so, then France will spawn a goal somehow, and that will be it. They may or may not roast them on the counter, but I suspect Deschamps will be happy to shit their way to a 1-0 win.

Adramelch

Ye that's what's going to happen. I reckon it might be 2-0 with a late goal when Croatia are playing with everybody up front but that's about it.

Only an early Croatia goal will change that but they've only scored once in the first half hour and they were already behind by that point, so I doubt it.

You're obviously fishing for this, but how can 1986 (3-2 Argentina-Germany) possibly be considered a bad final?

That said, Spain-Netherlands had a certain entertaining brutality to it, even if it was a pretty terrible advertisement for football. But obviously nowhere near '06 in terms of quality. Or DRAMA, for what it's worth.

Shots on target from open play discarding set-pieces, goals, shots against the woodwork, headers off the line and deflected efforts which definitely, 100% were never meant.

We probably wouldn't fare that well had they done it properly, but that's a scandalous manipulation.

You had the most shots on target from set pieces I believe, so you'd be somewhere in the 3.0 region I would reckon. Obviously all the other teams would be a tad higher as well, so you'd be somewhere in the middle if I had to guess.

Edit: 3.45/90 mins it seems. You had a combined of 15 in the first 2 games and 2 per game from there on.

-james-
14-07-2018, 11:19 AM
Whatever you think of xG, it is objectively a better way to judge chance creation than that, and England are in the top 3 in the competition for that iirc. I'm not saying that means they are good, but that graphic is a disgrace.

Out of curiosity, here's the shots on target per 90 minutes for the semifinalists:

Belgium: for: 6, against: 4.5
France: for: 4, against: 2.5
Croatia: for: 3.57, against: 3
England: for: 3.45, against: 3.15

Expected goals were created to mollify people who think the game should be played on spreadsheets. And while I do love a good spreadsheet, it's amusing how often it utterly fails to convey what happens in a match.

I'm kind of surprised that Trippier is going to make the pitch. He looked like he'd done some actual damage.

I think this misses the point. You certainly can't convey what happened in a single match with it, but you can't do that with shot counts either.

-james-
15-07-2018, 03:46 PM
The problem with these handball calls is that the defender gains an advantage from stopping the ball, but it is in no way deliberate. Shouldn't be punishable with a penalty.

He moved both his arm and his leg towards the ball, he clearly reacted to it.

It's easy to impose intention through slow-motion, in normal time/speed that's just the path he's taking and I doubt he really has time to react after it (unexpectedly) misses the first man.

Shindig

That rule doesn't seem to apply because refs (by and large) refuse to give anything marginal and then just leave it to the VAR.

Have there been any really obvious ones that have been missed? Kane against Tunisia and that Serbian one, I guess, but nothing happened with those . . .

Yevrah

I'd agree, but I think those who are saying no are going with the deliberate thing, which Mokbull's nailed below.

Referees are told not to follow the “intentional” part of the rule, and instead impose the “unnatural position” rule, because it’s a fucking stupid rule

Unless the player is Suarez-ing it off the line how can you ever prove it's deliberate?

Unless the player is Suarez-ing it off the line how can you ever prove it's deliberate?

See Umtiti's effort against Australia.

I'm not even sure you can say Perisic's arm is in an unnatural position. He's been done because, in slow-motion, it looks like the path his arm has taken has been designed to make contact with the ball, which, in reality, I don't think it has. But slow-motion is a cruel mistress.
