France v Belgium (Tues, BBC, 19:00)
Croatia v England (Weds, ITV, 19:00)

It's coming home etc etc.

Sir Andy Mahowry

I'm not sure what will happen in the games tbh.

France and Belgium should both go for the jugular and it could be a mental game.

Croatia on paper are stronger than England but two penalty wins will take something out of them. Plus England look deadly with set pieces.

Should be a fun set of games.

Croatia have to be on their last lags after the last few games. I think if England play with a bit of confidence, they could probably put the game to bed early and find Croatia with nothing left. It won't happen though.

I can't call France Belgium. I think France should be the favourites but they are the French.

Ian

Croatia don't look anything special but I suppose Modric is bound to hoof one past us.

England are statistically likely to win a world cup in our lifetime and there's nothing anyone's relentless pessimism can do to stop it.

I'm marking this up as a HUGE e-victory whatever happens next week.

Are croatia stronger on paper? I know very little about football outside my little bubble these days so it's a serious question.

From what I've seen in the tournament we both have one standout player, they have a far better midfield but we seem better everywhere else.

Andy
08-07-2018, 02:43 PM
France I think will just edge Belgium, hopefully a really hard fought game that goes the distance.

Shindig
08-07-2018, 03:31 PM
I don't think Croatia are stronger on paper. Modric and Rakitic give them some creativity in the midfield but, aside from that, it's a target like Mandzukic providing the threat. In contrast, our creativity is in the width with Sterling bringing play up the pitch. It's not like for like.

Waffdon

Perisic pisses over any English wide player. Croatia dominate the midfield in all areas and that’s about it. Both keepers and right backs are about par.

If the game isn’t settled in the first 70 minutes Rashford and Vardy have got to come on.

It will be interesting to see how ape shit the country goes if we win on Wednesday. And I actually mean interesting. None of us have ever seen England in a World Cup final, so whilst people will be buzzing Wednesday night you would expect the place to come to a standstill on Sunday, like a royal funeral/wedding double-header.

Spikey M

It doesn’t get more Brexit than that.

We should throw out the referendum result and decide if we leave or not based on the game. Jamie Vardy would have to start then, he’s the most Brexit cunt in football.

The weather does it to people as much as the football. I was in London on the May bank holiday Sunday (the one when the weather was like this) and it felt genuinely dangerous with the amount people had drunk and how many of them there were. I'd never seen the city like that before and if you add the World Cup final to it I would fear there will be deaths.

I went past the big McDonald's in Wandsworth and there were a dozen security guards at the door just to keep a braying mob of around 50 people out.

Yevrah

I mean, it's all on the idiots involved themselves, but no way does good weather create an environment where these twats run wild as much as England doing well.

Haven't actually seen France but I can't see Belgium not scoring after what they did to Brazil.

Jim's right about the weather. At least the temperature has dropped a few degrees.

Phonics posted it, so it probably comes from Twitter, so it probably isn't true.

Kieran Trippier has promised to “go blond” if England reach the World Cup final.
England are in the World Cup semi-finals for the first time since 1990, and face Croatia for a place in the final on July 15.
Trippier has been in inspired form in Russia, proving one of the team’s best creative outlets.
He has promised to “pull out the hair dye” if England go one step further and book a place in the final against either Belgium or France.
“If we get to the final I’m going to pull out the hair dye,” he told England’s Lions’ Den YouTube show. “I will. I’ll go blond.
“I’m absolutely buzzing. The way we’ve worked to get here and the players who are not here but are involved they need a mention because they work so hard as well.
“We’ve been working so hard before the tournament on formations and there’s the expectation as well. We just wanted to make our own history and keep doing well.
“We know what we can do as a team and the ability that we’ve got, the youth, the pace in our side, it’s frightening.
“We need to just worry about ourselves and nobody else and just keep performing like we have done.”

I find the Mbappe fawning a bit much. He's obviously having a great tournament, and is a great talent, but you don't have to shit your pants every time he punts the ball past a 30 year centrehalf and scampers after it or completes a 5 yard pass. Lest we forget Wayne Rooney was running riot over an international competition at the same age.

Giroud's first shot on target is obviously going to be some ludicrous fluke goal in the final.

It's better this way. To win a World Cup we should have to face down our oldest, most genuine enemies.

There's no real football history to that rivalry, right? Have you ever met in a really big game? I honestly can't think of one, which is surprising given the teams' strength. It's like how Germany and Brazil have only played once at a World Cup.

Jimmy Floyd

Twice. 2002 final.

England have only played about six really big games ever, and about four of those were against Germany.

-james-
11-07-2018, 10:36 AM
Neither have England though.

If the game were a fortnight ago I'd have been with Croatia, but I think fitness swings it. England should spend the first half knocking it about and wait for Croatia to PRESS themselves into a coma.

Max Power

I do have worrying visions of England of old just utterly clueless in the face of talented midifielders knocking the ball about for 90 minutes but I think this England are different and Southgate will have more of an idea of what to do. Hope we start fast and grab the first and hope they wilt under the pressure and tiredness.

If it stopped today, I'd say Modric by a fairly clear margin. Even though he didn't quite hit his best, I'd have Hazard at two, and then Trippier at three. If England win the thing, he's surely a bolter for the Golden Ball, as crazy as that must have seemed.

Mbappe gets young player.
