Colombia are a big unbalanced here for extra time if they don’t chuck it

They will have the extra sub.

SincereTheRebel

Is Tripper actually crouching down when the shot comes towards him? :D

It looked like he tried to head the ball over the bar. Poor poor decesion.

The board has never been this active.

Keeps erroring too.

Yevrah
03-07-2018, 07:58 PM
It's also good that we're heading into extra time with a team set up to see out a 1-0 lead.

Disco
03-07-2018, 07:59 PM
How fucking inevitable was that.

The World Cup.

03-07-2018, 07:59 PM
England’s defence is shambolic. Colombia will drop off again here though. I need to see a replay of that shot before the goal.

Dan
03-07-2018, 07:59 PM
It just shows that you have to put teams away when you have the chance. We've let them hang around when they've played 10mins of good football & now they'll do us.

Boydy
03-07-2018, 08:00 PM
Was I overreacting now Boydy?

:D

Maybe not.

That was coming though. They just kept getting deeper and deeper and letting Colombia come at them.

Also, you're going home now.

Pepe
03-07-2018, 08:00 PM
Colombia will get into play for the draw / time wasting mode.

Shindig
03-07-2018, 08:01 PM
We've created next to nowt from open play, to be fair. Columbia didn't start playing til the last 15.

Spikey M
03-07-2018, 08:01 PM
There’s no way we win from here. It’s not in our DNA.

Pepe
03-07-2018, 08:02 PM
There’s no way we win from here. It’s not in our DNA.

It's not in Colombia's either. Might come down to who manages to score a PK by accident.

Magic
03-07-2018, 08:02 PM
Dare to dream lads.

Andy
03-07-2018, 08:03 PM
That seemed inevitable as soon as Columbia got there heads back. We had literally no control over the ball in midfield.

Would have been far better off with RLC in there.

Pepe
03-07-2018, 08:03 PM
Good that England rested players against Belgium innit.

Adramelch
03-07-2018, 08:03 PM
Meanwhile it's the 3rd goal from Mina and they've all been identical. At some point you'd think teams would wise up on it, but no.

Trancemeister
03-07-2018, 08:03 PM
Mina looks fucked.

Shindig
03-07-2018, 08:04 PM
At some point you'd think they'd wise up to Harry Kane but ... y'know.

Adramelch
03-07-2018, 08:04 PM
That was somehow a foul for England.

Pepe
03-07-2018, 08:05 PM

Brill yeah.

We've created next to nowt from open play, to be fair. Columbia didn't start playing til the last 15.

Let's call a spade a spade, we've been dogshit.

Lee Dixon can bang on about shape as much as he likes, but we've created next to nothing and are more than likely going out to a genuinely horrible team. But it's alright, at least Harry Kane didn't get injured against Belgium.

Yevrah
03-07-2018, 08:09 PM
Southgate needs to do something, and I don't mean prepare an eloquent exit press conference speech.

03-07-2018, 08:10 PM

Adramelch

That's such a clear yellow card there for Bacca. That ref has been special.

Trancemeister
03-07-2018, 08:11 PM
The fuck was that.

Baz
03-07-2018, 08:11 PM
Oh god if they somehow scrape through we’ve gotta suffer another match against a team that England fans will think they should beat with ease, only for another inevitable dogshit game of football.

Colombia.

Adramelch
03-07-2018, 08:12 PM
For some reason I don't see Colombia winning on penalties, even against England, so I reckon they have to go for it.

Jimmy Floyd
03-07-2018, 08:12 PM
Southgate fucked this by bringing Dier on. A really wrong-headed change which shifted the momentum.

Yevrah

I'm not sure they'll need to, they look far more likely to score than us.

Mina, Mina.

Adramelch
03-07-2018, 08:15 PM

If there’s a goal in extra time I win £26. COME ON ENGLAND

or colombia.

Yevrah

This is actually bordering on the pathetic now. And to think, we rested people to secure an easier route to the final.

Trippier time-wasting there. England. :D

Jimmy Floyd
03-07-2018, 08:20 PM
They've needed to bring Loftus-Cheek on since we scored and never more so than now.

Eric Dier coming on has to be in top 5 worst subs. He is awful.

Yevrah
03-07-2018, 08:21 PM
This is such an England performance.

I don't want to come across as saying I told you (TTH) so (ok, maybe I do), but I did.

Mike
03-07-2018, 08:24 PM
I think England will win on penalties; then all the INGURLAND fans will be all ‘it’s coming home, we even win penalty shootouts now’ ignoring the fact we couldn’t beat a poor side without their best player or the Belgian second team.

Yevrah
03-07-2018, 08:25 PM
They've needed to bring Loftus-Cheek on since we scored and never more so than now.

The problem is that to bring him on it would make most sense if he replaced Vardy or Dier, but Southgate's never going to do that having brought them on in the first place.

They need to give rashford the ball asap. Half the Colombo defence are playing with one leg each

Like I said in the other thread, 2010 did that for me. It was quite liberating in a way as the eliminations have hurt far less since.

It's also important to remember that if we do somehow buck the trend of the last 20-30 years here, we're still not winning it.

Adramelch
03-07-2018, 08:34 PM
That refereeing team, holy shit. That was a clear corner from miles away.

We need to resolve the Sterling problem, but other than that I can see us doing ok.

It's imperative we start creating chances for Harry Kane though, as was said upthread, there won't be a shitter World Cup haul of 6 goals than his, even Oleg Salenko's. He could have had about 10 by now had we done.

Binning off Sterling should help, and Alli too if it's not fit, which he manifestly isn't.

Sterling was decent enough today. At least and bringing the ball forward and relieving pressure. He needs to know when to drop it off to someone else. Harry's goal tally has been marvelous because nobody seems to know how to mark him. He doesn't need to get on the end of things. He just needs to be manhandled and then take the spot kick. Still, he links up with the midfield enough it would be nice to see someone return the favour.

I think our corner routine was a bit iffy. If we don't connect with it, we've got two of our back three in the box. They've got the pace to get back but it's rife to be countered. And Alli's knackered, aye.

Penalty shootouts are the perfect way of deciding a game, they cut out the previous two hours of faffing and reduce football to its most basic task, kicking the ball into the goal.

We weren't doing ok, we were doing badly. Look, we won a shootout and given our history it's a huge thing to have happened. But, we weren't very good for the rest of match and nearly muffed this "excellent chance from being in the easier half of the draw". That we're now going into the Sweden game saying exactly the same fucking thing "only Sweden stand between us and the semi-final" is fucking bonkers.

I could just ignore all that and reduce the posts to "ra-ra teh World Cup is coming home", but that would be delusional when there are so many things we got wrong tonight.

The problem is that a lot of people (Yev included) expect England to be Brazil 1970. You don't need to look good, or be good, to win a tournament. Germany looked wank in large parts four years ago and Portugal were wank entirely two years ago.

If we get to the semi's I'll be as positive as the next man, as from then on in it's possible, even if we're playing badly and a semi in itself would be a hell of an achievement. I really don't, I'm just not prepared to whitewash a bad performance (and a horrible substitution from Southgate) just because we won a shootout.

I've seen all of the World Cups since 1990 and nobody has won one playing as mediocre as we have so far.

And on the Portugal point, you seem to be confusing being dull with being bad. Portugal were dull two years ago, there's no doubt about that, but they were still a good team that played well, albeit in a very limited sense.

If I saw that in us I'd be drowning in bunting.

Good opening v Tunisia then some nerves and a fuck yeah winner at the death, we battered the shite out of an aggressive Panama (you can only beat who you're up against in knockouts), our shit B team lose to Belgium's shit B team then a penalty shootout win (a fucking penalty shootout win) against Colombia who only got back into the match 4 minutes into injury time with their first legit effort on goal. We've been sound, we aren't world beaters, we never will be, but Colombia offered the square root of fuck all throughout until that goal. Neither did we but we were comfortable. Unless you want to take into account Cuadrado's feckless effort that left the stadium.

What are we supposed to actually do to win ya over? The number one ranked team in the world looked terrible and went out in the group stages, Spain passed themselves to death, Argentina lol. We were comfortably superior last night while barely creating a chance and not playing great, handily illustrating how guff this side of the draw is and what we might do if we actually put a performance in.

Also Southgate is not good at subs.

I don't think I enjoyed a second of last night outside celebrating the Kane goal and then the shootout... about an hour after I'd come down from utter disbelief.

niko_cee
04-07-2018, 06:40 AM
In many ways (other than actually playing well) it was the perfect tournament performance. Calm on the ball, dominated possession, didn't try to force it (played at a snail's pace throughout) and gave them (almost) nothing. Also, not subbing off all of our decent penalty takers as the game progressed is a new, and awesome thing. Henderson missing must have been one of the most nailed on things in sporting history, and he's not even left-footed. Never in doubt with Dier, although in my mind I had him either full Julian Dicksing it or rolling it in with unnecessary nonchalance.

Kikó
04-07-2018, 06:44 AM
To be fair to Hendershit (lol) - it was a pretty good penalty matched with a good save. I thought we were good for large parts and it took a sensational shot to open the door for the corner. Rashford or Vardy should have come on earlier.

They literally didn't have a single decision go against them. They are just used to compliant local refs who buy into the mentality that 'gamesmanship' or whatever is fine.

We’re in a World Cup that Italy and Netherlands failed to qualify for. Spain, Portugal, Argentina and Germany have all crumbled. We have a fucking good chance here. We SHOULD beat Sweden (I don’t expect to, but we should), we’re atleast as good as Croatia so we have every chance. Yeah, but we're still only (I know) in a quarter-final and (while we've ticked off the penalty victory now) reaching a semi-final is still a huge thing for us psychologically. If we do that and I'd agree that we should (if we play well and create chances, which we haven't really yet), then it's possible, yeah.

Penalty victory aside (which I admit is a MASSIVE thing and can't be discounted), I still haven't seen a huge amount that separates us from other tournaments where we got no further than the quarter-finals, but beating Sweden, if we do, will change that.

I feel like we have more of an actual plan than we have for most of the last 20 years even if that plan is dour as all hell. Southgate isn't simply best-eleven-ing it but then he doesn't have the players for that anyway so maybe it balances out.
