Mexico nailed on for being knocked out in the quarters for like the 6th World Cup in a row.

That's the round of 16. Only the US and Costa Rica have made the quarterfinals from CONCACAF in recent history.

South Korea v Germany sounds like a right laugh.

If Germany were a little less dominant, this could be a Group of Death. South Korea also aren't quite the force they used to be, and are probably now only the third-best team in Asia after Japan and Iran.

We'll draw 0-0 three times, and whoever wins between Mexico and Korea goes through with 4 points.

Mazuuurk
30-05-2018, 07:15 AM
Sounds likely. We basically have to win against South Korea to stand a chance, but given that it's the first game, it'll definitely be a stale draw.

Mexico will beat us for sure, and we might be able to sneak a draw against Germany since they will already be on 6 points by then and might not be fucked.

Yeah now that they're all there it definitely needs the sub forum like the old board.I disagree. We just need more threads per page, so it’s less of a TAKEOVER. It seems to be set to 20 at the moment, which is a lot less than it used to be, right?

Or is that just in my settings?

I thought that the other day but I was too lazy to check if it's a setting we can change. The number of threads per page should be double what it is now.

Is it subconscious racism to think that all (or even some) Koreans look broadly similar at a glance?

Yes. It's not 'racism' per se just a fact of life.

The cross-race effect (sometimes called cross-race bias, other-race bias or own-race bias) is the tendency to more easily recognize faces of the race (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race_(classification_of_humans)) that one is most familiar with (which is most often one's own race). A study was made which examined 271 real court cases. In photographic line-ups, 231 witnesses participated in cross-race versus same-race identification. In cross-race lineups, only 45% were correctly identified versus 60% for same-race identifications.[1] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross-race_effect#cite_note-1)

You get the sense that referees are bottling making big calls in the knowledge that if it’s really wrong they can fall back on VAR, not good. Right decision was made in that instance but don’t see why the ref hasn’t given it in the first place.

I think from where he was relative to the challenge and the angle the ball moves away from it, it looked like the Korean player got a touch. I didn't think it was a penalty at first either.

Pepe

I guess defenders will have to stop diving into the ground like idiots every time.

Pepe

Soft penalties have been given, true, but once you know that a PK will be given for contact in the area, you have to adjust. Don't see what the big 'mess' is.

It didn't look like a penalty to me in live play. Or well it was 50-50 whether it was the Swedish or Korean player that actually touched the ball.

Also, there have been quite a lot of penalties but how often do we complain/hear commentators complain that refs chicken out of giving fouls they'd give anywhere else on the pitch but don't in the box because it would be a penalty? VAR is essentially just rectifying that.

Max Power

Don’t mind pens being given I’d just like the referee to call it at the time. Not wait for the other team to launch a counter attack, then go stare at a screen for another 30 seconds. Just ruins the flow a bit.

'The refs are bottling the big decisions!'

Referees have always bottled big calls or, even worse, given penalties when there was no foul (fuck you Robben.) Can't see how this is worse.

niko_cee
18-06-2018, 01:29 PM
Aye, surely it's just as 'safe' to give it which then triggers the review. You can be wrong the other way and the game isn't left with that weird bit where everyone is waiting for the referee to start waving his arms about. Someone is going to score (or get sent off) in that hiatus, eventually.

Given that refs don't seem to be giving yellows for diving I can't see that happening.

In fact, they seem to be being very lenient on all sorts of fouls which usually lead to yellows - shirt pulling for instance.

Bernanke

Diving needs to result in a three match auto-ban to compensate for all this penalty area bullshit.

A fair few of the games this World Cup have lacked flow. VAR doesn't help in that respect. The end of the Serbia - Costa Rica match was a prime example, two needless reviews with all the players fannying about waiting into 8 minutes of stoppage time.

Yeah he wasn't great. Not worst though, I'd say that was Toivonen who really did absolutely nothing all game. Berg should have scored as well, he doesn't do much else so with the chances he had he should have put one away I reckon.

I feel a bit like Forsberg is a little wasted out wide to the left for Sweden.

Claesson - Forsberg - Durmaz
Berg
