Group of death?

ItalAussie

Depends entirely on whether Serbia bring anything to the party. The last time any of the Balkans impressed at a World Cup was Yugoslavia and Croatia in 1998, I think.

Phil Neville says the Germans like to start tournaments fast, but I'd always believed that not (necessarily - of course everyone wants to win every game) to be the case and hence the "you can never write off the Germans!" maxim, which makes no sense in a context where they are rolling through everyone as if it's Poland 1939.

Wrong group, oops.

"Just to clarify, these decisions will be reviewed." WE KNOW, CLIVE! Hopefully the commentators chill out about the VAR at some point.

Brazil didn't really get the best out of any of their players. Not sure that midfield set up really helps anyone. Looked like some morphing compromise between 4-4-2 and 4-3-3 to satisfy Neymar's craving for a total lack of responsibility.

Spain have looked the best that I've seen so far.

Unlike last time around someone breaking Neymar's back would probably be of benefit to Brazil.

Portugal are the only team that gets anywhere near a successful Roy of the Rovers megalomaniac system. I wonder if it is because they are a slightly smaller nation, or if it's just force of will on C. Ronaldo's part. I suppose Brzail came close last time, but found the inherent flaw in the system. You really can't afford any other 'luxury' players.

Never has a player been better suited to wasting his life in a team like PSG than Neymar. He should probably move to China, the massive twat.

SincereTheRebel
17-06-2018, 11:08 PM
I still don't understand the hate for the French league, PSG and Neymar. Its the weakest of the big leagues but all the other leagues this year besides Serie A had one team dominance and the titles were virtually wrapped up by Christmas. But somehow he is wasting time in France yet he is the probably in pole position to be the first player outside of Messi and Ronaldo to win the Ballon d'Or.

Neymar would go to any league and do numbers.

ItalAussie
18-06-2018, 04:05 AM
I also still have Brazil as the favourite, and you have to imagine they'll click into gear as the tournament progresses. First match is always going to be cagey.

I don't see the reason for hating Neymar, either. He seems inoffensive enough, unless you feel strongly about hair being the window to the soul or something. I don't think he's particularly selfish, and he doesn't have to do it all this time around.

Jimmy Floyd
18-06-2018, 05:38 AM

I mean, I would be furious in his position too, but it's no coincidence that it's predominantly the south american/mediterranean players that show that much of a childish behavior when things go sour. And he only really started being that furious after a penalty call where he was clearly acting. That won't gain many sympathy points from me.

Some of those can be quite entertaining. It's the ones where a draw suits both teams that are the nightmare and there could well be a few of those.

Belgium v England has a red mark against it on the schedule.

If Brazil play like they did in the last ten minutes I'd like to see them go far. That move ending with Firmino's skyed shot and Neymar's skill at the end were great.

They played good football throughout the 2nd half I thought. A lot of good chances and not just the long shots that they had in the 1st half.

Nice to see Firmino getting involved. He strikes me as a better option for this team than Jesus.

Also, Douglas Costa is miles better than William.

South American coaches always have their pet players. Firmino would probably have to score 3 as a sub to get a look in at starting (although he clearly should, not biased at all, like). Jesus is a better goalscorer, but Firmino would get more out of their other stars (and seeing as that is their game he would be better for them). Paulinho's another one. They're wasting Coutinho as well, as Liverpool did in the brief 'fab 4' era, you lose so much of what he can do when he's always picking the ball u on the halfway line. He's a forward. There's also the danger that they are going to get absolutely rinsed down that flank by anyone half decent as Marcelo-Coutinho-Neymar might be just about the least defensively capable trio in those role in football history.

This is another game where the teams are playing in the wrong colours.

Brazil had no business being in blue earlier either. What was the clash - socks? That can't have been their proper away kit anyway as don't they wear blue shorts with the home kit?

Jimmy Floyd

I think the whole second round has just been away kit advertising.

Stojkovic all over the shop there. He is a proper clown keeper.

Im no tough guy but I don't understand how players very often, turn their back and face when shots come to them. If Ivanovic would have faced the ball, he could have made a better attempt to block the shot.

Both Serbia and the Swiss have a red home and white away kits so the colours on show make sense. I also noticed weird coloured combinations during games.

I dunno, without Coutinho in the midfield you’ve just got three cloggers, a la Argentina. Not sure who else Brazil have that could do that job. He seems to be doing alright in that position, from an individual perspective.

I'm no lover of Serbia but I think he's been outright biased.

I had money both on 2-1 Serbia and 1-1, so I am obviously very biased in this case, but I'd tend to agree. I'm actually surprised the Serbs didn't complain more after the final whistle.

That said, the Serbs' transition from attack to defense was underwhelming at times. Especially for the equaliser, it seemed that five of them were still standing in the opposite penalty area when the Swiss were attacking.

He's done well enough (had some individual brilliance mixed in with being their best player) but that's because he is their best player. It would be beyond funny if they won it, and he starred and thus ousted Neymar 'clearly the third best player in the world' Jr (lol) in the Ballon D'Or pecking order.

As far as cloggers are concerned, I like Willian and all, but he's a bit of an attacking clogger himself so you could bin him for Fernandinho without losing much (seeing as he isn't allowed near set pieces).

Jimmy Floyd
23-06-2018, 03:41 AM
Willian is one of those players who can often look shit on an individual basis, but balances the team nicely. It also allows you to change it up from the bench if needed, as they did yesterday, rather than blowing your load in the first half.
