They break street date over here all the time, if there's a game I'm looking for I can normally get it 3-5 days early. If you had the PS4 or Xbox version you'd be able to play no problem but PC activation has to go online.

Jesus, so actually having a legitimate physical copy still isn't any use without their online shite any more (no doubt to fuck you up as it's probably only about 20% of the game initially released and they need to shill you for more). Gaming really is fucked up now.

With FM last year I bought the physical version because we didn't have the internet set up in the new house yet, turned out the disc was just an alternate way of authorising the download through Steam anyway so I had to rinse my mobile data through tethering which I could have done to begin with. Right load of shit.

I loved Far Cry 3 but went off 4 pretty quickly. The setting here seems more my thing so if the first impressions from people today seem alright I might grab this later on.

I'm in the same boat, I played an hour or two of 4 but it was too soon after for me to get really into it and a lot of people are saying 'If you're not burnt out on FarCry you'll enjoy this' which is what I'm looking for.

:D Gold star for Webly.

This is my icon collectathon of choice so I'm going to get it at some point, partially in the hope that they've found Clint Hocking in a cupboard somewhere and it'll be good again. Not that they've been bad, 4 had the good grace to remove all possible character from the main story and just let you blow stuff up in whatever way you like.

I think it was because I flew the gyro prior to that and made it stall by flying too high or by going off map. It also might have been for crashing it into a cliff.

I did one of those in the co-op. Possibly two.

Only had an hour last night on it and not got off the first island yet so very early days. But first impressions are that it's very 'far cry'. I didn't play primal in the end as I needed a break after 3 and 4 which were so similar. This is the same again, just prettier and a (So far at least) more interesting setting.

It's very similar to the previous couple of games. An enjoyable blast though.

Just rescued the dog and kitted out my pistol with a suppressor. Use that and the bow normally for range (until I unlock a sniper rifle) and a baseball bat for close up stuff.

I've managed to get to the main island (the one that Joseph rules over) whilst still technically locked.

https://i.imgur.com/wOg9PI2.jpg

I was roaming on a bit close to it and saw that bottom waypoint with my binoculars which allowed me to fast travel to it.

Managed to kill someone on the island and they dropped a beastly sniper with scope.

Killed everyone in the actual compound from the mountains then went down to explore. Church is closed (there's no door) and I haven't found many goodies sadly.

Currently rocking a sniper with the best scope and a silencer, a .44 magnum (or similar) and a bow.

Also, I bought the Gold edition but like quite a few the sniper that I was meant to have ON DAY ONE is not there. I think I've gotten everything else but not that. Apparently it's affecting quite a few which is shit.

Thing of beauty

https://i.imgur.com/5VKsArB.jpg

For those who hated it, there's no skinning animals (you can kill em if ya want), no towers. The world feels more like FC2 as in there's constant ultra aggressive patrols which you can challenge if you want, or you can map your way around and avoid the conflict.

The fishing mini-game is addictive as fuck, the gunplay feels meatier. Movement is a joy, especially the grappling hook and parachute. I'm enjoying it so far, but then I avoided 4 and Primal so it feels nice and fresh.

Overall though, I fucking love the world and the setting.

This is great. Really fucking good. Loads of shit to do but ti doesn't crowd your HUD with markers anymore, its suitably mental while also being tense and the setting is perfect.

Was fishing earlier with a gun merchant just standing around behind me waffling away when all of a sudden I hear a loud scream, but I've got a catch and its a tricky bastard so fucked if I'm helping. Gun merchant innit, you got that shit. Reel that sucker in quick sharp, turn around and he's on the floor being decimated by a black bear who's now looking right at me, charges, knocks me into the water. I swim around to the side, chuck a remote explosive and blow it to fuck. Just as that happens I hear the YEEHAH of the hicks charging me, whip out a molotov and have them up in flames then shoot the canister on a flamethrower guy so he fucking explodes all whilst my gun merchant dies, I run away and stumble on a small side quest mission that gives me a slight puzzle for solid rewards, new gun and three upgrade points (perks).

Its a lovely world, feels like Far Cry refined. The world isn't scatted with map points, the gameplay feels very emergent, the gun play is satisfactory and all the shit ya hated is basically gone. Even has a solid health regen system that rewards running the fuck away and regrouping. Plus the roads are chock full of mentalists who will attack on sight.

First island is, I assume, Dutch's place where you start out.

I went for John Seed's region - I think that's meant to be the place you go first as it has a) Boomer and b) a lower "resistance score" than the other two areas. My internal logic was that he was doing the training/recruiting for the cult, so offing him would stop that supply. But it doesn't really matter which you pick.

It was a good game though, but (from what I remember) the gameplay was a lot more unforgiving, and the it was a lot more serious in tone. It also had perhaps the strangest voice acting I've ever encountered in my video-gaming life too. Far Cry 2 is one of the greatest games of all time.

The flaws were pronounced as fuck (repeating the same outposts and roadblocks over and over and both factions still gunning for you when you’re working for them) but, it was way, way, way ahead of its time. The malaria stuff was great too, sitting nicely somewhere between the over zealous implementation of the filters in the original Metro game and the underwhelming radiation poisoning in Fallout 3.

This. When you learned how to master those tactics, trying different ones along the way, it’s incredibly empowering and satisfying.

3 was disappointing in being such a departure from that, though the sheer fun and production values made up for it (and especially blood dragon which might be my favourite DLC of all time)and 4 obviously repeated the formula. I see this one just continues to refine that whilst again having a largely disposable and at times jarring narrative. I’ll enjoy it I’m sure.

The mission before that that involves bombing things. My word. I nailed the first one and then proceeded to spend almost all of the money I had earned up to that point on more bombs.

The planes being brought in to down you when you get to the second resistance level on John's bit is bad enough. What a dreadful thing to put in a game, or at least implemented in such a way that the plane can constantly see you.

It's absolutely no threat unless you stand completely still.

I think they really fuck this games pacing by not forcing you to unlock levels in order. I just did the Jail mission in Faith land and once completed some woman gave me the stink eye because 'What have they ever done to stop this cult?'

I mean I've only killed one of the three heads and freed an entire third of the state. But yeah, what have I done really.

I've now taken out two of the main bosses and unlocked most of the allies. The 50 cal sniper rifle is a must unlock ASAP - so effective, just like in previous games.

The story mechanism where you continually get kidnapped/drugged every so often to go and get lectured by Jesus hipsters is wearing a bit thin, mind.

Yeah, the game doesn't need four of them. My favourite one came in Far Cry 2. There's like a car right outside your cell.

Mike wants me to drop £23 (+£27 steam credit made from cards & pubg items) on this to co-op on PC.

Convince me it’s good.

All bored of this now then?

Nope, still rinsing fuck out of it. I don't hammer games like I used to these days though, I miss having ten free hours every day.

Nope, I was on holiday.

Played it the other day and it's still brilliant, I've got one of those shit hunted things to do though.

Just started on the final region today.

I did John's region apart from a few side missions and little map notifications and just moved onto Faith's region. I've put in some time to it and not really scratched the surface yet, as I only play maybe up to an hour at a time this is going to last me ages.

Far Cry: New Dawn is kinda FC5.5, set in the post-endgame events of FC5 (bit spoilery if you've not finished it):

Might be worth a punt but I've already got a ridiculous backlog of games to get through. I need about 6 months off :moop:

No thanks, I don't think I can play FarCry 3 for the 5th time in 5 years.

The mini releases between proper games have never grabbed me, plus I'm still waiting for a heavy sale before getting 5. FC2 is ten years old now, might fire that up instead and play halfway through it like every other time.

Far Cry 5 was discounted on Gamesplanet the other week but not enough for me to go in.

I never finished Far Cry 2, I also get to the halfway point and am then done.

2 and 3 I have done. All of them since, no.

Far Cry 2 is still my favourite. I mean, 3 and 4 are better games but there's a cohesiveness to 2 before they crack the code and litter the map with THINGS.

5 was alright, but the story was kinda bobbins. Still one of the best games for ad-hoc crazy shit happening, but you can't overthink it.

2 lost me when you had to be saved by the guy you were supposed to be killing. I pissed around and enjoyed the fire physics for a while after that, but I was never seeing the story through after that start.

3 was the best by some distance.

FarCry 2 was total shit but seems to have done a whole load of influencing modern game designers which is weird.

I loved 2, it felt raw and immersive, albeit it clearly ran out of steam.

They've all been formulaic mince since then and as a result, 5 was (whisper it) actually shite.

4 was my favourite, I liked the villain in it. I forget his name now. I'm not sure I ever finished 3, and I haven't even played 5 yet. Primal was the last one I bought which, admittedly, was a bit shit.

Pagan Min. He was good, I really didn't like having to make story choices which pretended to be 'mature' by being shades of grey but they were also massively black & white. You could do it this way and have child soldiers or do it the other way and tell the militia they're allowed to rape and pillage. Meanwhile I'm supposed to be roleplaying an American college student who landed 30 minutes ago to bury my dead mum.

I tried playing 3 on a PC that was out of date by 4 years even when it was brand new and then a touch on a PS3.

4 was quality with the co-op, although I didn't play anything after me and Ian did all the co-op stuff.

I barely touched Primal and 5 started well but I quickly got bored.

I finished 3, but abandoned 4 shortly after meeting those crackheads that lived on a cliff. I did enjoy a bad guy that made Julian Clary look like Chuck Norris, though. At least briefly.

I was waiting for 5 to drop in price, but I haven't bothered yet.

2 is two mechanics away from being perfect and is therefore the best. 3 & 4 are basically the same but the story is easier to ignore in 4 and the baddie is also better (Despot Llewelyn-Bowen over Captain Ooh-Aren't-I-Mad any day of the week) but both are inherently silly for making me stitch a wallet out of crocodile dicks and eagle beaks.
