My Father-in-law is going to continue to be suffering. Another defeat v St Mirren tonight.

The games been off since yesterday, mate. Should be fun having to play all these rescheduled games.

Kikó

Yeah I was thinking that as soon as I thought about it. Porto - Sporting is the fixture then.

Do we reckon there’ll be any Premier League games called off this weekend?

Jimmy Floyd
02-03-2018, 01:24 PM
Called off games should be just that, a point each.

Giggles
02-03-2018, 01:24 PM
Yeah that'd work and wouldn't be open to abuse at all.

Jimmy Floyd
02-03-2018, 01:29 PM
- Eases fixture congestion
- Is much fairer as some teams don't have to knacker themselves catching up all their games in a week. Rochdale have 6 in hand at the moment.
- Incentive for clubs to get games on/improve facilities as otherwise they'll lose matchday revenue

Can't see the point of having backlogs of crap games.

Lewis
02-03-2018, 01:39 PM
I can see why lower divisions call matches off, but what excuse can a cashed-up Premiership team have for not being able to get somewhere?

Kikó
02-03-2018, 02:23 PM
Well they should be calling them off because the fans struggle to get to the fixture. The local infrastructure is out of control of the football team.

Lewis
02-03-2018, 02:29 PM
And the football team is out of the control of the fans. If they can get there then great, but you can't not play a fixture because most [away] fans can't get there.

Kikó
02-03-2018, 02:34 PM
I think it's pretty reckless to have people on the road to watch a fixture (a thing they've paid for).

Lewis
02-03-2018, 02:45 PM
The club could presumably offer refunds/ticket swaps. Other than that, having to skip a match can't be any more inconvenient than having to plan for a re-scheduled match on a Tuesday four weeks away.

I'm really struggling to understand the logic of that corner from Everton's perspective. Giant centre forward standing in 5 yards of space at the back post (completely in the view of Williams), barely moves and ball lands on his head. Is that Williams just being an idiot, blindly following instructions to keep his zone, or some combination of the two? A fancy foreign manager would be getting lambasted for that sort of shit.

Sir Andy Mahowry
03-03-2018, 02:14 PM
Well at least Everton wont have to play Williams for a few games.

Jimmy Floyd
03-03-2018, 02:16 PM
Williams looked like he was in some sort of trance.

I know he scored today but that Tosun is a ghastly signing. Fat lump with no qualities whatsoever. Ashley Barnes the far superior footballer but you don't see people chucking Ł27 million at him for a few goals in a league the standard of our Championship.

niko_cee

Martina must also be one of the worst players to ever get a game regularly in the Premier League. Do they not have any halfway decent youngsters they could play there instead?

Farmer Barnes continues to impress. I couldn't believe he was only 28 when I read that the other day.

I'll put it to you that it's because they all constantly sack their managers so no team ever manages to develop an identity anymore.

The ones who have come out of the pack in recent years have all had a clear identity - Burnley this year, Pulis's Stoke, and on the other end of the spectrum, Good Football Swansea of a few years back and that mad pressing team 'Poch' had at Southampton. And counter-attacking Leicester, of course.

"Identity" is just the narrative that's applied because a team is doing well.

Labelling whatever the fuck it is Burnley do as something out of the ordinary is a stretch. They did the exact same thing last season but nobody was shouting about it because they came 16th.

It's not out of the ordinary, they just know what they are as a team and the coach knows what sort of players fit into it. Identity gives you an idea of what you're supposed to be doing and a reason to keep doing it week after week. It's the same thing that makes Manchester City good. They had the same money and mostly same players last season but the Guardiola identity hadn't yet seeped through in the way it now has.

Watford, for example, exists purely for these little 8-game bursts of form before the players get bored and the manager is sacked after a decline. There is no other purpose to that football club at the moment.

Nobody would be claiming Burnley have an "identity" if they were in the bottom half, which they probably deserve to be. They certainly aren't one of the best ten sides in the country, but being seventh in the league apparently means Strepsils has overseen a revolution.

Chelsea won the league last season because they happened to find a system that worked really well and played better than anyone else. They tried to do the same again this season with fairly similar personnel and it didn't work. There's no need to apply a narrative.

You're trying to decipher football with maths, it doesn't work that way. Footballers aren't machines that need to be plugged in the right way, they are humans who make illogical and unpredictable decisions. Teams that have an overriding sense of who they are (whether successful or otherwise) are going to do better in the long run.

The last ten years of Stoke City is the best example.

I just think there is a tendency to look for patterns where it's just variance. West Brom have had a similar spell in the top flight having gone through about ten managers. Watford are doing pretty well by doing their utmost to avoid acquiring an identity.

I see George Weah's son made his debut for PSG today. Is Enzo Zidane still kicking around in Real's B team? How many sons have gone on to outdo their successful footballing fathers? Lampard? There can't be that many (and many more Callum Bests).

Yevrah
03-03-2018, 07:38 PM
It stands to reason that so few of them get anywhere near to where their parents did as for the most part they probably only get their chance due to who their father was rather than through their footballing ability alone.

From years of reading about it he just tells the players to think about what they did wrong, not tell them, think about, their mistakes and then sits in silence for 7 minutes.

Which is fine if you're dedicating 3 minutes to Tony Adams pinning Lee Dixon to the wall of the dressing room or 5 to Jens Lehmann telling everyone they're shit but not when Laurent Koscielny is bursting into tears telling everyone even his kids think he's rubbish.

That's part of the problem. You need someone or a few in the team to have a right good rollicking at the others when it's not up to standard. I can't see anyone in the Arsenal squad doing so. Worse still, I can't see any of the Arsenal staff doing it either. Wenger and Bould just seem to sit on the sideline shaking their head.

It's in the club's interests to throw every game from here. Arsene has the same idea. Sixth is better than fifth. Initiating the nosedive while they were still in fourth was an odd one though.

Even if we bin every game from here on I'm not sure Burnley and co will score enough points.

Is 6th better than 5th? Same bollocks fixture list next year with maybe an extra qualifying round. I am nostalgic for the Europa League early rounds though, hopefully we get Hapoel Tel Aviv.

1st-4th - Group Stage Champions League (Man City, Liverpool, Man Utd, Tottenham)
5th - Group Stage Europa League (Chelsea)
6th/7th - The winners of the 2017–18 EFL Cup (Manchester City) will finish in the top five of the Premier League. If the winners of the 2017–18 FA Cup do not finish in the top six, then this berth will be given to sixth place (Arsenal). However, if the winners of the 2017–18 FA Cup are in the top six, this berth will be given to seventh place (Burnley). If the winners of the 2017–18 FA Cup are in the top five of the Premier League, the sixth placed team will be given a berth in the Europa League group stage. Otherwise, the sixth placed team will enter the Europa League second qualifying round.

This does feel like a particularly low point. Chants of 'we want Wenger out' at one stage - and from a good chunk of their support, it seemed.

May have been Chelsea-specific but might have been partly Pogba based, although Mourinho said the 4-3-3 v Newcastle was perfect for him.
