Rules are easy enough to grasp, no tl;dr here folks.

Put your name forward, I'll compile a list, we all pick a team from the Premiership and if they win that weekend (loss/draw = out) that week you go through to the next round.

As this is a new-ish game I'll accept ideas. Should we include the #FL72? Should we include the SPL? All the teams? What happens when there is a draw? etc

Let me know your thoughts and interest. :)

THE TEAMS:

Arsenal
Aston Villa
Bournemouth: Maz
Chelsea
Cyrstal Palace
Everton
Leicester: Mahow
Liverpool
Man City
Man Utd
Newcastle
Norwich
Southampton
Stoke
Sunderland
Swansea
Spurs
Watford
West Brom
West Ham: Magic

THE PLAYERS:

You need to stick to one league or you're going to have far too many easy games to choose.

I'd be in for Premier League or Champions League but doubt I could be arsed for anything else.

Who cares about the losers?

If it got down to final few and they all picked losing teams in the same week, would you start all over again with everybody or have a rollover week with those players?

Also, would we be playing for money?

Fair enough, it's probably going to be fairly quick turnaround time.

Money or vcash? LOL.

Should we do #FL72 then and you can only pick a team once?

You sure they didn't pay the others who ended up winning something? I remember getting two different pm's as I wanted to pay before going on holiday so I wouldn't forget to pay. I think both you and Spoonsky pm'd me and I paid you as you were faster.

Reg
29-09-2015, 09:09 PM
Possibly. If they did, they could have replied to my PMs politely nagging them.

edit- pretty sure I knew the total I should have received.

But whatever, I suspect they made a mistake/were really busy at work or whatever. I doubt anybody on here would deliberately avoid paying a fiver, we're a pretty good bunch.

Spoonsky
30-09-2015, 03:39 AM
Same happened with me for the WC sweepstake (I was Argentina) but in their cases it was mostly people who hadn't really agreed to it and had been put in unknowingly. It wasn't really worth the 15 quid to pursue it.

I am down for this but make sure that everyone explicitly agrees to pay from the start, or puts the money in a fund beforehand.

Magic
30-09-2015, 02:28 PM
OK so here are the rules:

It is the #FL72. You can pick a team only once. Once you have picked said team I will update the OP so you can't pick again. Only league games. People can pick the same team (but obviously not if they've already played with them).

Money will be collected at the end of the game. There will be prizes for 3rd, 2nd and 1st. This will be dependent on how many people play. If multiple people lose and that ends the game, it will be rolled over until there is only one man standing.

Thoughts?

The FL72?

What the fuck is wrong with you? Either make it the Premiership or don't bother.

You can only pick one team you mong. That'll make it very boring very quickly with very little in the way of strategy.

Toby
30-09-2015, 02:39 PM
Have you actually played this before, Magic? Using the whole football league sounds like a complete clusterfuck. We'll probably end up still playing at the end of the season.

What is the method for picking the team (PM you or in the thread?) and what is the deadline?

SvN
30-09-2015, 02:41 PM
Why does having more teams mean it's going to last longer?

Ignore this post, I totally misread the rules and thought we picked a team then stuck with it.

Sir Andy Mahowry
30-09-2015, 02:41 PM
Using the Premiership means that you have to pick and choose carefully, you really have to weigh up when to pick a 'danger' team.

Magic
30-09-2015, 02:42 PM
Just post in here as it's no big secret. Multiple posters can have one team they just can't pick it again. A risky strat.

Deadline is lunchtime on gameday? Any objections to that?

Magic
30-09-2015, 02:43 PM
Using the Premiership means that you have to pick and choose carefully, you really have to weigh up when to pick a 'danger' team.

I don't see how the FL72 isn't even riskier. Predicting results there is fucking impossible.

Toby
30-09-2015, 02:44 PM
Why does having more teams mean it's going to last longer?

It's not necessarily more teams that is the issue, but having more leagues means a lot more games where an in form team is playing a weak side.

Rather than just being able to pick the Premier League top four before things get properly difficult, everybody can choose the best teams in four leagues and suddenly we've played sixteen weeks without a huge shock and half the players are still in the game.

Just at the end to the winner.

Mazuuurk
02-10-2015, 08:12 AM
Shouldn't someone hold all the money, and then transfer it to them at the end?

And what I meant was what service do we use to actually transfer money with?

Magic
02-10-2015, 08:13 AM
I was going to say just transfer all the money to the gamesmaster (me). Then I'll distribute it in one lump sum to the winner.

You don't pay, you don't play. Stops people not paying if they go out early. But whatevs.

Mazuuurk
02-10-2015, 08:15 AM
OK yeah that sounds good, but I still want to know which service I'll have to use to transfer money with to participate (since I don't want to have to create anything new).

I have paypal for instance, will that do?

Magic
02-10-2015, 08:16 AM
I don't use PP. I was going to PM each player my bank account number and sort code so they could transfer the money. Once it's in I can confirm the player.

What do you need for paypal?

Mazuuurk
02-10-2015, 08:19 AM
You just create an account and pair it with your bank account / credit card.

I won't be using a normal Bank transfer though, it means I'll have to use IBAN and the transfer alone will cost me about 5-10 quid, which doesn't seem worth it.

I suspect this is the same for anyone outside the UK.

Yeah I used to think that, but they seem to have made it a whole lot simpler.

Anyway, I've only used it to SEND money, not Recieve it, so not sure how well that works.

Mazuuurk
02-10-2015, 08:59 AM
Well I mean there's not much more to it, is there?

If someone manages to pick a winning team 20 rounds in a row, they will 99% have won already, unless some people systematically pick the same teams each round, but even then they will likely sooner or later split paths.

IF there are more than one person still standing after 20 rounds, you just reset the count and allow people to pick any team they want again, no?

Toby

What would be the main challenges in building a website that let people pay into a betting pool (like this) and then distributed it securely to the winner?

I'm sort of surprised it's never been done, you'd think it'd be popular for things like Grand National sweepstakes.

SvN
02-10-2015, 09:21 AM
It probably does exist. It's not a huge technical challenge. Security and legal stuff would probably be the biggest pain in the arse.

At a basic level, it could all be done using something like Paypal or Stripe in about a day.

Sounds like something that could work following a model similar to Kickstarter?

People 'pledge' a set amount of funds towards the bet, then bet is then placed and the winning split evenly amongst the participants.
