It deserves it's own thread because it's fucking spectacular.

Metro City:

The 2D pipe bit thingy at the end of the story missions for the world was fucking brilliant. Absolutely nailed it.

It's fast becoming my favourite ever game.

I really need to get back to playing the post game of this. But I agree, it's one of the best games ever made.

Worth buying a Switch for?

From what I've been reading lately, definitely yes. Been strongly contemplating it myself.

Everyone I've spoken to echoes this.

A genuine masterpiece apparently.

I don't usually pay attention to review sites any more, but when every single outlet is giving it a 5/5, 10/10, 100% etc I will look into it.

Is this one of those very rare games that lives up to it's own hype?

Mainline Marios are always good. Especially Sunshine.

Its an astonishing game of control, flow, discovery and delight. Everywhere you go, or look, everything you do or try is rewarded on some level. Its straight up telepathic shit from Nintendo. The fact that the actual game starts post-credits is a clever move as if you basically bomb through the story and put it down, its a solid 8/10. Again, like all games, it depends on how much fun you place in trying things out, looking for shit etc. Its rarely sign-posted, rarely guides you, rarely says "you can't do that mate". There are people out there who didn't enjoy it, but they're gonna rot in the cunt of hell.

Also if you buy a Switch, you've got the legit greatest of all time, Breath of the Wild, to dive into as well.

I seriously don't believe a game has controlled as intuitively as this before. Take this article (location spoilers):

https://kotaku.com/super-mario-odyssey-players-are-finding-the-best-shortc-1819971133

There's a bit I did (actually the second clip in that article). I thought I'd defeated the game by trying something, only to find Nintendo had actually put some fucking coins there. I felt clever for all of ten seconds, then its a fair fucks Nintendo moment.

Every level is built around that sense of flow, intricately built and sculpted. Zelda is discovery, Mario is movement. Vallu is the master of it, check his speedrun to see the game at its most incredible.

There's more, that's just how many the game registers :D

How is it that the Mario series manages to keep hitting such perfect marks, while constantly innovating and renewing itself? No other series, other than maybe Zelda, seems to be able to manage it.

Because they're both series that are loved by their devs, rather than an excuse to plunder more dollar from the customer. If only Metroid followed the same vein (despite about five flawless games in its lineage).

I would say so, along with Zelda.

Worth buying a Switch for?

No but with Zelda, yes.

Then you have Mario x Rabbids to complete the set.

Both getting a million years to work on them and Nintendo's rather unique way of development goes in their favor I think. They spend an inordinate amount of time having the devs themselves playtest the game from minute one.

Here's how Zelda works from the dev side for instance: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bz_UmRDesMyvQkdOWV9rVjlKaDQ/view

Apparently all the people watching this presentation were in awe as they'd never thought of developing games in the way they had.

And of course Skyrim is out on Friday

And yes, I know everyone already has it, but the ability to play Skyrim anywhere is going to be incredible.

Definitely worth getting a Switch.

Plus the best indie game of the year, Thumper. Its on other platforms but it deserves to be owned on all of 'em.

Might have to invest on this one. Haven't played a Mario game since 64.

Outside the games mentioned, is the Switch itself worth buying? I've read up very little on the console itself but is the controller comfortable, is the battery life when using it handheld any good or is it just a gimmick? Any glaring issues with it?

Browning

I find the console itself very impressive to be honest. Being able to play games of that size and quality on the move is outstanding. No issues with the controller as you have several options. Battery life is alright but you can buy a wall charger for it which helps a lot if you’re somewhere you can plug in but not at home. All round I think it’s great with the only drawback until recently being lack of games.

I'm surprised by the joy con controllers, I thought they looked too small when I first saw the trailers and felt that they would be comfortable but they're quite nice.

I also bought one of these:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hori-Nintendo-Controller-Officially-Licensed/dp/B01NAUATSM/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

As I find it a little better for playing Zelda on.

It's blown my mind that seemingly really good Zelda and Mario games have come out and I heard literally nothing about it. Growing up is shit.

Almost at the end now and just had to take three tries to beat a certain boss. I think I'm on the penultimate kingdom now so Bowser is getting his cock punched in very soon.

A fucking dragon that emits lightning?

Did look amazing though and I did like the fight so much.

Unlocked the final kingdom now.

That Mecha Broodal was tough, didn't help that I kept making stupid mistakes. For example when I got to the final broodal to kill I accidentally moved my joy cons in celebration mid stomp which executed a jump off the robot :\

Onwards to Bowser and the moon!

The last bit of the story in New Donk might be my favourite part of the game, it's just brilliant.

Sir Andy Mahowry

And I'm done with the story, so good.

Peach is a bitch. Mario saves her from Bowser and they're pretty much an item throughout the whole series and yet she almost leaves him?

Pepe

Finished the main story.

That dragon was really cool. It was also fun to be able to control Bowser for a little while there.

Haven't enjoyed a game this much in ages. Obviously there is a lot of stuff still to do, but I think I will move to Zelda for the time being and get back to this one eventually.

How many stars can you buy in Mushroom Kingdom? Is it indefinite? I bought a couple of ten star batches but maybe I shouldn't have.

It's fast becoming my favourite ever game.

I did this yesterday and it really is great. The whole of that city is great really.

The only thing I've found frustrating so far is some of the motion controls. 9/10 when I try and throw cappy up, it goes forward. 10/10 when I try and throw cappy in that circular motion it just goes forward. It shouldn't be difficult at all as the instructions are clear, but it's so unlikely that I pull it off in any of my first 5 attempts that I've just given up on them and use other less efficient solutions. I can get by fine without them (so far), but it's definitely a bit annoying.

Everything else about the game has been a complete joy.

Pepe

Never bothered with the motion controls myself.

Sir Andy Mahowry
27-11-2017, 02:07 PM
The spin move is a lie, I think they only let you do it twice with motion controls and then they remove it.

I haven't been able to do it apart from the first world right by the sign post.

I ended up just leaving the motion as I couldn't get the accuracy out of cappy and just took to pressing Y.

Pepe
27-11-2017, 03:20 PM
You can do the spin move by rotating the left stick and then throwing the cap. I don't think I ever used it though.
