I too have come round to Bake Off. I think it's the lack of 'personal stories', it's just them completing a task and their personalities come through rather than banging on about how hard their life is.

It also helps that that Liam kid might be the most charming 19 year old in existence. Look at me, describing teenagers as charming, I'm so fucking old.

- It is the most American thing there is, in every respect, good and bad. The thing that strikes me most is that it kind of exists in its own unchanging world which MUST remain constant. Footballers from the 1920s-50s are so impossibly distant to us, but Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio are almost still living and breathing now because they were playing, give or take, exactly the same game and we have all the same stats about them as players are compiling today.

The 'farm system' is genius. Lewis would love that, United would own Bolton, Oldham, Accrington, Macclesfield and Salford and have all of them packed out with young players from around the world.

But yeah, $34 million a year for Zack Greinke to play about 1/5 of those games? Nice work if you can get it.

On the topic of supporting, I used to be a Djurgården suppoter in Sweden, which I suppose I still identify as if someone asks, but I don't really give a fuck about that team - or Swedish football - at all anymore, and I'm not really very fussed about how our national team does now either now that Zlatan doesn't play for it.

I used to support Pompey but since they went so low in the system now I mainly just support Arsenal, which has sort of become my main team overall that I care about (much to my own frustration, as I'm not sure why I took a liking for them in the first place but I think it had something to do with Ljungberg & Bergkamp back in the day).

Arsenal fans are comfortably the worst in the league. Even the ones I know are the most unstable fans of any club I’ve met. It’s like they never grew out of their 10 year old football fan stage, you just know they all wear Arsenal pants (which often get in a twist) and have the full bed spreads.

Baseball is the season. Completely different sport without it. People primarily follow it through the newspaper standings / box scores and “plays of the day” on the nightly tv news. It may still even have a larger radio than tv audience. You are right about the stats but they just developed based on the narrative trends you see throughout a long season. It gives you so many different stories to follow throughout the year, like how long until hitters figure out Ohtani. I’ve never seen anyone so quite so many swinging strikes before.

Everybody is still gigantic. You have one spot on the team allocated to normal people who are very good with the ball, and the other 4 spots split among people who made it to basketball because they were tall and who may or may not actually be good at basketball.

Basketball is also super limited in terms of variety since the court is so small and the people so big. It's cool because it flows like soccer, but it's far more repetitive.

Basketball is shit, it's just constant scoring.

The whole Lavar Ball thing made it interesting for about 30 seconds.

Basketball is great fun in thirty second highlights packages but I tried to actually watch a game and lasted a couple of minutes at most.

Now see those are legitimate gripes.

1. I want points to mean more when I watch sport.
2. The noises of the squeaky shoes annoy me.
3. It just bores me when in reality only the last 5 minutes of the game really matter.

Totally fair criticisms.

Yeah, I watched some BBL and it occurred to me a lot of it was looking at the score and realising a decent 10 second spell evens most of it up. I had an olive for the first time this week. Not too keen on them. They look like they should be juicy but they're LIES.

How delusional are you? The majority of players on a basketball squad aren’t particularly talented, they’re just 215 cm tall.

This is also somewhat of a problem in tennis, which I love. They need to lessen the influence of the serve there, imo. There’s too many ace trolls on the tour.

All great ideas chaps, glad we've got a queue of people willing to put their thoughts out there.

One I heard would be to just get rid of the second serve. It makes sense - why do you need 2 chances to hit that big box? - but it would be an enormous rule change and I don't even know how they'd go about getting that going.

They've tried making surfaces slower in the past for this very reason but the changes in play have been modest.

Raise the net by a foot.

Jimmy Floyd
01-06-2018, 11:31 PM
Make the net lower, but only have one serve. That would sort them out. You'd end up with loads of dynamic rallies and they'd all take even more drugs than they already do.

Would also reduce the length of the match by a lot, which sports authorities love to do these days because they all hate their own sports.

mugbull
02-06-2018, 12:33 AM
Nope, if there was one serve matches would be far longer since there wouldnt be nearly as many service winners as there would be with two serves.

You’ll be able to find downsides to any change, but you have to take the bad with the good there.

bruhnaldo
04-06-2018, 08:01 PM
We used to play this game called "Smeer the queer" which of course is an awful title in 2018 but anyways... the object of the game was to take the 'handegg' as it were, run by or passed everyone else playing, and get to the "endzone" whatever that may be ("passed the mailbox but before the concrete!")

If you were tackled, you basically gave the ball up and there was a "scrum", as it were, to see who got it next. There was no real point to it except to try not to get tackled.

Long story short, your country's treasured pastime is an off-brand, non-sanctioned child's game that has no real strategy whatsoever and how dare you compare it to the chess that is AMERICAN FOOTBALL.

That's the problem with all of their motor racing too, the first 3/4 is totally meaningless, to the point where in oval racing they'll practice overtaking each other. In fact nearly all of their sports could be improved by cutting them in half at the very least.

I make a spotify playlist every month. I add and delete stuff as the month goes on and then start again fresh on the first of the month, usually leaving behind about a 30-track finished playlist for the previous month. It's usually the latest rap songs but a few anomalies often make the cut. Currently on this months is this bad boy:

I too have vaguely started watching baseball every now & again - I think it’s because it’s the NFL offseason. I’d like to get into the NHL & NBA too, but it’s just too much sport for one life.

Been watching a few games a week as they roll around on BT Sport, as well as condensed games on YouTube, and I think I'm becoming a Yankees fan - mostly because they're the first team where I saw five guys whose names I remembered, but also for this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1FxLyRpmn4). Just murdering the ball

I still have no idea what some of the stats are/why anyone gives a fuck about them (wins/saves, for example), and it's weird how every game is commentated by the home team's guys, but otherwise it's solid. The real test will be whether I still give a shit in August though.
