The most meaningless load of wank in sport returns, now rebranded 'The Best FIFA Player'. I'm confused, though. Is this the one they will move mountains and distort geopolitics to win, or is that the once again independent Ballon d'Or? The below all shortlists.

Men's Player: Messi, Neymar, Chris Ronaldo
Men's Coach: Allegri, Conte, Zidane
Goalkeeper: Buffon, Navas, Neuer
Fan award (not sure what this means): Dortmund, Celtic, Copenhagen

Spoiler alert: Cristiano, Zidane, Buffon, Dortmund.

I always think those fan awards should reward people like the last band of maniacs still going to Blackpool matches, or whoever managed to sit through every Southampton game last season. Giving it to people just for making loads of noise seems pointless.

Collective distance travelled by away fans would be decent metric, weight it more heavily the lower down the leagues you go.

Basically anyone from Torquay going all the way to Carlisle (or vice versa) to watch whatever those sides conjure up in 90 minutes deserves an award. Or to be sectioned.

Didn't Celtic get fined about two weeks ago because of their fans? Seems a bit odd to consider them at least the third best set of fans IN THE WORLD.

Separate awards. They merged for 6 years then separated again last year.

IIRC, nobody paid that much attention to FIFA's last year and the Ballon d'Or was a much bigger deal.

What did Copenhagen do to get a spot on this list?

What has Mbappe actually done to be included in this?

Played really well. It shouldn't just be for players who've won trophies, imo.

There are players on there other than him (Kane) that haven’t won anything. He’s a decent player, sure, but top 10 in the world? That requires a reason beyond ‘playing well’.

I agree that he doesn't look top ten.

De Bruyne's almost a certainty for top five next year, I think. (Edit - just remembered it's a World Cup year. If Belgium do crap then he'll have to win the Champions League or something.)

The award should be rebranded one last time to Ballon d'This is who won the champions league, in case you forgot
