Apparently much more widespread than was thought.

Modern slavery and human trafficking in the UK is "far more prevalent than previously thought," the National Crime Agency has said.
The NCA said there were more than 300 live policing operations currently, with cases affecting "every large town and city in the country".
The agency estimated that there were tens of thousands of victims.
It said previous estimates of 10,000-13,000 victims in the UK were found to be the "tip of the iceberg".
"The more we look, the more we find," the NCA's vulnerabilities director Will Kerr said.
Mr Kerr said he had been shocked by what he had seen during this year's intensive efforts to break up gangs, with almost every major operation triggering even more investigations.
He warned that trafficking into modern slavery was now so widespread that ordinary people would be unwittingly coming into contact with victims every day.

So, come on, which one of you fuckers have one?

Mert is one.

Is 'modern slavery' actually a criminal offence? I've just seen someone charged with it on the Beeb's report.

If so, why? Surely rape, ABH, human trafficking and imprisonment laws already have it covered.

Presumably forcing someone to work for no pay is an offence, so yeah.

Because we don't want to touch 'communities' for fear of racism, I imagine there's all sorts of stuff going on.

It was reported that there was a brothel set up on campus in first year. It must have been one of the studio flats because I can't imagine 11 other students just going along with that. Still, considering there's 24 hour security it's ridiculous that it even took off. I assume most sex workers are being held against their will, so yeah, it's everywhere.

Who is it driving the boat on this one then?

Shadowy Eastern European types were on the BBC's report. I was expecting Liam Neeson to turn up with a baguette.

The only slavery we care about is MURICA and BLM people from 1800s.

Any missing child from within the past twenty years is probably botched up in the back of some corner shop or curry house in Rotherham.

Maddie. Sold by her parents before the holiday because they couldn't be arsed to pay for another seat on the flight.

More slaves alive today than were ever involved in the transatlantic slave trade, they say.

I mean, a lot more people exist than back then, but still.

There are more shitty houses in this country filled with asian families making menial shit (pillows was the last one I saw crop up) than you would have thought.

I read a good book about Chinese slaves over here. They basically end up in perpetual debt to the triads and work in restaurants, selling DVDs in pubs, fruit picking and brothels. It's grim.

It's a shame that there isn't the resource to fully investigate these things.

There's quite a lot of auditing of supply chains going on but only really for bigger businesses that want to avoid negative headlines.

The Chinese shrewdly avoid detection by not knowing that bank accounts exist.

I wonder if Henry shagged a slave.

I would.

Have a slave that is, not shag Henry. Only a true monster would do that.

Africa loads of slaves. India and the middle east loads of slaves.

But nobody cares.

It's all within the trafficking/sextrade domain these days isn't it? Or do people actually have like household slaves* that do their dishes and cook their food etc?

*in before Mert comes in here and calls that "women"

I know people who are consensual sex slaves.
