He just moved on. No idea why he kept paying, maybe out of nostalgia. The site was huge news back in the day, had a deal in place with PC Zone magazine and stuff.

I found the board because there was an affiliate link in game on one of the early 2000s Championship Manager games.

Yeah, that's how game PR is done. Particularly with the death of print magazines. SI don't do much in the way of marketing so they tie-in with the major fansites which, The Dugout was very much top of the pile. Same thing goes with Konami and Pro Evo. They don't spend time and money on a TV or print ad and just go straight to PESFan or WENB with preview codes to stoke the hype up. Ultimately, that's the audience and its much easier to connect with the existing fans (who can then word of mouth it) rather than canvas for new sales.
