Where do we stand on this? Food of the gods or utter shite?

Former for me, the thicker and saltier the better

It's a must and I want it exactly how you described yours.

I didn't properly get it until I tried some proper stuff (Bisto is so shit), it was glorious.

American 'gravy' is a shambles though.

I can't have a chippy - or pretty much even any form of potatoes - without it.

Amazing. Especially when made with the juices of the meat.

I can be a right pretentious ponce with most foods but gravy is off limits for me. Bisto gives me the same gravy hit as any home made one.

Gravy is top tier food stuff. I don't mind if its not very thick as long as it has flavour, if its piss consistency then it ruins a meal though.

If I've no meat juice, a red onion with some water and a squeeze of tomato puree does the job for stirring some bisto into. A spoon of Bovril does wonders in it also

Tesco do nice pouches of ready made stuff too.

Gravy should be made from proper stock from a joint, not powdered processed wank.

The Chinese stuff up your way is amazing gear. They use dried blood in it and all and it's so thick you could tar roads with it

As in KFC style gravy? Or the white shit they also seem to call gravy?

I like my gravy thin and intensely flavoursome. I can understand the appeal of that northern stuff but I wouldn't want it with a proper meal.

So what you're saying is you prefer jus? Francophile!

Spikey M

For a roast, I like it the thicker end of runny. For chips, northern stylee, I like it barely liquid. Watery piss gravy can do one.

I get round that problem by not sourcing it from the local latrines.

KFC gravy is made from all the bits of chicken and breading that get stuck to the inside of the fryer, retrieved when they're cleaning it out. It's amazing stuff though, probably the best single item sold by any fast food place.

Have you guys ever had Hawaiian BBQ? It's popular in California and one of the restaurants has a dish called the Loco Moco which is a beef patty with two sunny side up eggs over it, a lot of gravy, side of steamed rice and macaroni salad.

That white American sausage gravy looks pretty great, even if it could no doubt be put to better use than with 'biscuits'.

I like thick gravy (liquid, not so thick you have to wait ten minutes for it to pour). Gravy on sausage and mash is great, gravy on a roast even better. I have it on chips once a year or something when I'm feeling adventurous(!).

Gravy on an egg is the maddest thing I've ever seen.

There are no words.

It's not even the maddest thing in that photo. Rice and pasta in the same dish is properly bonkers.

And let's not forget Hammer puts gravy on his pancakes.

Ok so the responses to that contribution were admittedly more negative than I expected. However, 5am leftovers is definitely the vibe the restaurant is going for, and I've never been there before midnight in my life. It's fucking incredible and I have 2 stickers on my laptop from that place cause I practice what I preach

If it's literally a bunch of leftovers from normal meals that they put into a combo box and sell to the inebriated at two in the morning, then I gain respect for them and their business nous.

Given there are people on here who advocate putting a whole pie into a sandwich I'm no longer surprised. Actually it's a wonder there aren't chips in there too.

I wasn't aware you normally get gravy with chips and that sort of thing, except I know the Canadians do that with some sort of Cheese M&M's on top as well.

Just gravy in general is great though, so I don't see why not. For me it's more a component of roast dinners and christmas turkey, etc.

And whilst I'd be happy dipping my chips in gravy, I'm not sure how I'd feel about them coming drenched in it, as I do like my chips to be a bit crispy, ideally (though it can ocassionally be nice with these american diner type varieties where they drench them in cheese and jalapenos and the such, so maybe if it's a bit like that then why not).

Also do you count other types of gravy? like the onion stuff you'd get with bangers & mash? cause that is lovely as well, but feels a little more contextual.

That's the point of a takeaway, the filthier the better.

If I'm in a new place I keep searching until I find a Chinese with 40 year old sofas, 5 year old goldfishes in a tank and an army of cats lined up out the back waiting to go in the wok.
