Yes in another feeble attempt to be better at life I've locked on to this. Target acquired!

Anybody else in to this? It sounds really quite interesting and not overly complicated or namby wamby bollocks.

Might give it a shot.

Has some new age arsehole applied this title to their 'philosophy of being' or whatever, and that's what you're on about?

I always thought this was more to do with the school than it now appears it is.

If you class the Greco-Roman world as hipster I'd love to see your idea of old fashioned. The dinosaurs? Lol!

Is it not just the long-term, default setting of the British male? Stiff upper lip and all that.

Unless I'm missing something and there's some sort of deeper, more all encompassing philosophy out there.

This https://dailystoic.com/what-is-stoicism-a-definition-3-stoic-exercises-to-get-you-started/ is a decent read.

Sounds a good philosophy/position to hold but obviously much more useful with actual techniques to go with it.

I was giving you the benefit of the doubt. I assumed that because denying emotion doesn't seem like a great way to be 'better at life' when 'life' is a broken marriage with a daughter who's going to need emotional support.

My old supervisor was a big believer in it, to the extent that he believed everything since to be shite (although he did make the distinction between 'philosophy' and things like political theory). But then he was the sort of person who cured his chronic back pain by binning his office chair and working standing up.

This is along those lines and is supposed to be very good, Magic. Might interest you - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Happy-More-Less-Everything-Absolutely/dp/0593076192

I've been wanting it for a while now but I've not got round to getting it yet.

Clear misunderstanding of the practice.

I always thought Stoicism was something to do with Stalin.

It's one of the ancient philosophical schools that has aged best - in that it still sounds fairly sensible today.
Some of the other stuff they had back then was insane. Everything is made of water! Numbers are divine! And so on and so forth.

Numbers are divine. The only "God" we have is mathematics.

What does "divine" mean in your language?
