View Full Version : Reassuring constants

I saw something on the BBC website this morning about Frankie Dettori missing Ascot due to injury, and it made me think - Frankie Dettori is a like a timeless, ageless constant in my life. I've been conscious of what's going on around me since about the mid 1990s, say 1995, and there's never been a time when Frankie Dettori hasn't been in the space he still occupies - top flat jockey, gobby little Italian who goes on the telly sometimes.
I find these constants, however minor, reassuring, especially as they drop off as I get older. I'm sure there are many others, in TV, sport, etc - film is slightly different as actors do noticeably age into different roles, but there may be some examples. Also just in life - shops that are unchanged, foods, brands etc.
What examples do you have?
The Queen is the obvious one.

Lass I'm seeing says Coronation Street is a big one for her. No matter what shit happens in her life, Corrie is always there for her to sink into for half an hour at a time, and probably always will be. Sounds nice.

I don't watch soaps, but their theme tunes coming on the telly is certainly one for me. Especially the Corrie one

It's a bit sad perhaps that I can't think of many of these.
Even some of my favourite places have changed. But the closest I get I suppose are some fairly timeless neighbourhoods where I live, that sort of have the same feel as they did before (only of course a bit gentrified).
There's a local pub/bar that never ever changes, that sort of thing.

I suppose my group of mates from home is the best one for me. We've got a Facebook message group and a Whatsapp group and it's always to read through what stupid shit they get up to.

It really is this place. The amount of times I click on while I'm at work, even when I know for a fact that nobody's posted.

Despite not posting that much for years, probably for the benefit of all involved, I've had this consistently set as my homepage since 2005.

With horse racing, the Morning Line on Channel 4 always signified that it was the weekend but apparently they've lost all the rights. I can only hope they still air Transworld Sport at 7am.

The voice of the classified results man/men is another one. I hear Five Live have installed a woman on theirs now, fortunately I don't listen.
Martin Tyler as well.

John Motson. He's not 'there' as much but he's still working.
David Beckham's raised eyebrow.
Jeff Stelling on Soccer Saturday (for 95% of those years I thought his surname was Sterling.)
Sue Baker on tennis coverage.
Red Hot Chili Peppers releasing music.
