That's not really relevant to how the country is, I thought these threads were based around if you wanted to visit.

You thought wrong. It can be about that, but why limit discussion?

Oh, and sushi is great. Expensive, but great.

Your going to give yourself away Offshore Toon. 60 seconds between switching accounts will get tongues wagging.
I will give a good reply to this one.
I love Japan.
It was the best place I have ever visited.
Theres a story attached to the niboshi.

I have a class to run in 20 mins so will post when done.

The worst is all the weird crazes they indulge in, such as the eyeball licking.

Anime is shit too, isn't it? Dragonball Z was fun as a kid, but people saying they still watch and love it are fooling themselves.

Because history isn't relevant in the best thing about a country. It's a current question.

Anime is garbage. I've really tried getting into some of the "great" ones, but it's all supremely uninteresting.

Amazing country to visit. I truly don't know how anyone could ever be bored there.

On my second-last night there last time, I walked in my sleep and pulled the fire alarm at 3am. Building evacuated and everything. :D

Best: functionality
Worst: sadism, perversion and an utterly abhorrent attitude to women.

There's probably a thirty eight issue manga about that doing roaring business there now.

I'd definitely have a flick through a comic book about a sleepwalking tranny scientist.

I'm going to guess that someone has or soon will dismiss 'anime' as being rubbish, it's inevitable. It's as silly as saying I hate books because every word Charles Dickens wrote is somnambulant tripe or that The Wire cannot be good because I could never get into The Bill.

Anime is just Japanese cartoons isn't it? Those Miyazaki films are decent.

The schoolgirl porn, less so.

Disco

I'm assuming you also don't care for schoolgirl porn in other mediums too.

I cant believe the hate aimed at anime and Manga. It annoys me that a lot of people dont even know there is a difference too.
Japanese culture is one of the best on the planet.
I wish I lived there permanently

Because they keep this homogeneous culture and let very few outside influences in, they also make almost none of what we would call 'progress'. So women are there for sex and food preparation. Combine that state of mind with economic development that isn't kept up with by social development, and you've got absolutely ripe conditions for a nation of dangerous male perverts.

Koreans have a similar thing, but it's not as extreme as the Japanese (as slightly more 'progress' has been made), so they seem to express themselves in mental horror films and a bizarre obsession with online gaming.

Modernity + Linguistic (therefore cultural) isolation = Weirdness. Hence why the English-speaking world is the least weird (and the universalist Americans are the weirdest part of it), because we all keep each other in check, and then you slide through the normal Europeans, the Germans, the perverted Dutch and Nordics, before finally getting to the Japanese and the Koreans who are off the charts with their depraved attempts at popular culture.

I don't know if it was linked on here or somewhere else (I've since lost it) but I remember reading a very good article on the evolution of Japanese culture which went into why such prominence has been given to very niche interests over the last few decades.

I want to say it was Boyd or phonics but I'm in no way sure.

I'll give you the Dutch any day. But while I'm not going to deny we're weird, because we might well be, I'm not sure I think we're very perverted up here.

That business with the saunas and birch twigs puts you all over the edge.

Agree with you on that one. But that's only the Finnish who do that.

We Swedes just stick to sitting around in the sauna, preferably getting wasted.

Best: Nintendo

I was surprised to hear that Nintendo have been around for over a hundred years. Their first product was playing cards (there must be a less shit word for that, but I mean a deck of normal cards you use for poker etc.)

Oh, and sushi is great. Expensive, but great.
I thought it was very cheap whilst I was in the UK. Same in here really.

Saunas really are the best thing about Finland. Is it very common to have a sauna in your flat in Sweden too?

In comparison to other food it does measure too well on the price:satiety scale.

Can't knock a sushi buffet. Eating about 50 pieces for less than 20€

I've only done that once at a place over here but it was pretty awesome. Giving you a timer of 1hr45min was a new one, but by that point you're only eating for the sake of it anyway.

I've found sushi to be quite expensive here in London. Yo-sushi being the worst culprit.

Anime needs to go in that deviant thread. IT's for perverts.

Wasabi is pretty good and reasonably priced. I used to love Itsu but it's a bit more expensive so it was only like a Friday treat lunch now and again.

Nailed it with Nintendo, Offy. What a glorious company.

I'd add nature (http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2122.html) to 'best'. It must be a great place for a hiking/walking holiday.

Also, martial arts. I'd like to learn one some day (although not necessarily a Japanese one.)

I don't get the Nintendo love, unless it's nostalgia, they'd be fucked if they had any real competition.

Nintendo's quite odd. They create some of the most inconic and best-loved games ever and then saddle their consoles with toy-ish, niche appeal. Not that Sega's suicide was any better, mind.

My respect/love for them comes from the pre-Wii consoles. So many childhood memories, but also games that stand the test of time.
