View Full Version : Branded vs Nonbranded

Why do people prefer to buy more expensive branded things which often have no discernible quality difference over non branded items but are sometimes 4 or 5 times the price. Is it the lure of advertising?

A few examples:

Chopped tomatoes
Rice
Pasta
Paul Pogba

What's the point? Unless you're a chef surely own brand chopped tomatoes for 12p is perfectly fine rather than dropping the best part of a quid on them?

I thought this would be about clothes.

With food I'll always get the Morrison's own stuff, although usually the normal own-brand rather than the plainly packaged ones.

9 times out of 10 it's exactly the same stuff. One of the lecturers at Uni said Sainsbury's have a contract with Heinz, so their own brand beans are actually Heinz beans. The same is true of Crisps, chocolate, etc.

Oh right I do buy Sainsbury own stuff but never tesco or asda. Lidl with exception too.

You got to Lidl now? I remember you once going on a right rant about how shit it is there.

It's ok. Their bakery is great though. Aldi I cannot stand.

Aldi baked beans are incredible.

You can also get half a kilo of rice for like a quid. Rice is rice, not having that as being any different anywhere else.

Decent tinned tomatoes are way better than the own brand ones.

Things like flour and sugar though, I can confirm that the 'basics' versions are literally exactly the same as the normal own brand stuff, just with less fancy packaging.

This. Depends what you're using them for as to whether it makes any difference though.

I normally get own brand stuff but if those Napolina chopped tomatoes or passata are on offer, I'll get them. I do think they taste better.

Aldi is pretty awesome tbh. I wasn't expecting it to be, as a Waitrose fan boy, but you can't go far wrong in there.

it makes a difference with some things. tinned tomatoes are always the example i use. not necessarily a question of branded vs unbranded, but quality is important. watery crap tomatoes make watery crap meals.

Igor pretty much summed my thoughts on this too. Not all products are as good as others and it's not really a question of branded/non branded than it is of quality, what sometimes is better in one and sometime it really makes no difference.

The daddy of fine sliced/crushed tomatoes for pasta sauces etc. is this: http://sandhurstfinefoods.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Mutti-Polpa-Finely-Chopped-Tomatoes-400g.jpg

I used to get the piss taken out of me by some old friends for shopping at places like Lidl and Aldi. I still do and I always visit second hand shops too because you can grab some brilliant bargains. I could go into any of them, buy £10 worth of clothes and after a modifications they are perfect for my needs. I imagine those old friends now rely on food bins and are still wearing Kappa tracksuit bottoms whilst waiting for there fortnightly 'wage' so who laughs now.

I dont understand why society as a whole dont realise that most of the clothes you wear your paying for the name on it and not always the material. There are some things you should spent big on though, your wardrobe should have a good fitted suit, a few quality pairs of jeans and things like that but mostly just standard clothing for the seasons. When buying food, I dont think many people realise its mostly made in the same place. I reckon the Heinz beans you buy are the same in the 12p tins because I really dont notice a difference.

The majority of the public are brainwashed to an extent.

Supermarket branded butter is always crap (the Aldi one glows in the dark), and I'm particular about toothpaste, but other than that most supermarket things are alright. That said, supermarkets have different price ranges within their own brands, so 'I just buy the non-branded one me' probably isn't quite as heroic as some of you are making out. Have you seen the state of the cheapest meat some of these places do? You wouldn't give it to a cat.

There is definitely a difference in canned tomatoes. More expensive is not always better. Also, got to make sure to get the unsalted ones. Canned beans, I only buy Mexican brands, the American ones are horrible. As for pasta, De Cecco shits over all the others.

I remember having non-branded chocolate bars that imitated Twix and Mars Bar and whatever else in my packed lunches at school, and they were always just as good. I reckon most things are pretty much the same.

However... is there a good cola that isn't Coke or Pepsi?

Waitrose had this for a while, but recently I've only seen it in the Student Union shop:

Pretty good tbh. I normally buy it when I see it over Coca Cola/Pepsi for variety since I like them all.

In one of my marketing classes we read an article or study regarding this, and how industry professionals to a much higher extent choose the non-branded choice. The more ITK the buyer is the more they "see through" marketing. Dentists is a very clear example of this.

That isn't to say that there aren't differences in quality, but they are rarely justifying the price increase. Like Lewis says as well, non-branded stuff often comes in "tiers", and I tend to go for non-branded stuff but not the cheapo-versions.

Mike

One thing about Aldi, some of their stuff is exactly the same as branded stuff. 'Wacko bars' for example are exactly the same as 'Rocky bars'
The crisps are crap though. As is their butter.
Can't knock it for meat or fruit on the right day.

Marketing that is clearly targeting businesses is the worst. In fact IT and Telecoms marketing is just fucking atrocious.

I have a feeling that B2B marketing in less processed/cultivated (from a business standpoint) industries is lightyears behind B2C-marketing involving large groups of buyers. It's partly because there is less incentive to specialize in those areas as a marketing professional, and because it's more complicated since it to a large degree is based around business networks and peer-to-peer relationships.

Most supermarket brand crisps come from the golden wonder factory in Scunthorpe. Or so the guy who works there told me a few weeks ago.
