Best: That Guiness advert with the horses in the sea
Worst: St Patrick's Day, leprechauns, Fry Crayola

Best: the accent, especially on jockeys and horse trainers

Worst: This isn't Ireland's fault, but I'm going to call it The International Irish Phenomenon. Irish bars, St Patrick's Day celebrations by people who are neither Irish nor religious, extremely tenuous claims of Irish ancestry in order to seem somehow edgy or different, and before long it extends to Ted Kennedy supporting terrorism because nobody who subscribes to The International Irish Phenomenon actually understands Ireland at all.

Best: the cliche of the Irish being welcoming is unnervingly accurate. I have an entire side of the family that I see every 10-15 years which should normally make for polite yet awkward conversation, but they're so friendly it scares me.

Worst: 12€ for a vodka and coke, fuck Dublin

I ordered 2 pints in Dublin and had a 10 euro note and a 5, just in case it came to more than 10.

"16 Euros please".

:D Thieving Paddy bastards.

They're all pissheads, so either earn a fortune, or all have an IRA card which gets you a 3 pint round for €5.

They just don't drink in the tourist traps. London is no different on that score.

Do they do horse racing in their own country? You wouldn't think so the amount that traipse over here at the mere mention of it.

By tourist traps do you mean 'every bar in Dublin city centre?' If you have to travel to the pub from Waking Ned just for a cheap pint, you might as well cough up the €8.

There are pubs that are €5 a pint in Temple Bar for fuck's sake. Make an effort.

Over £4 a pint

Rewatching that Guinness advert also got me to listen to Leftfield's first two albums, so it's not a direct positive but it's something.

What's the best band/artist to come out of Southern Ireland?

Pogues. And Tin Lizzy.

Thin Lizzy seems to be the only respectable shout after a quick Google.

U2 should be added to the worst list, too.
