Ronaldo is funny like that, because for all of Messis flair and touch etc, his dominance seems to have faded a bit as his pace has gone with age. Ronaldo though is a powerhouse, and while he's not as quick as he used to be I suppose, now he's this super-striker type instead.

Juventus are funny because within Italy they're really the dominant, unlikeable, favored by the ref cunts with millions of bandwagon fans (can you tell my cousins live in Naples?), like Manchester United but worse; but in the Champions League they suddenly become plucky and likeable compared to everyone else. And yeah, the back 4 deserve to win a Champions League (has Buffon actually never won it?) so I hope they do it.

It was still happening when Fellainimania started to run wild, because they were both further forward. Without somebody running around the actual midfield making interceptions and fouling people Carrick tends to look a bit final season[s] Paul Scholes.

How does this team compare to the 2015 version?
Buffon has never won the CL. I hope he does (obviously).

How does it compare? I'd say it's six of one. That team probably had more outright talent, especially in attack. This team is more balanced and organised.

I really like the Khedira/Pjanic midfield combination, and I'm slightly worried about Khedira's suspension. Dybala is a special talent and we need to keep a hold of him.

Dunno. Carrick seemed to pick up second half when he didn't have Pogba in the same part of the pitch and he pushed up rather than being a third centre back.

Raoul Duke

I thought Carrick was good but Pogba (aside from a couple of decent passes) was invisible. I rate him, but he's never really done much every time I've seen him. Herrera has looked a far better player. Micky Targaryen and Rashford were great, Luke 'Fat Lad' Shaw had a good game and Lingard is bobbins.

If Carrick's going to stick around though we definitely need some 7ft tall, rapid shitkicker in alongside him.

Zlatan is injured now so it's too late I think, but I always thought it would make more sense for United to play 4-4-2 with Zlatan and Rashford up front and Pogba on the left like he was in Juventus as far as I remember. Drifting inside from the flank seems like his most threatening position, and it would make sense then not to have someone like Mata fucking around in the middle.

Lingard could probably do a passable job as a industrious right winger who allowed Valencia forward.

But since that's fucked, the Chelsea system might make the most sense now with Pogba & someone else (Mata?) behind Rashford and Shaw + Valencia as wingbacks. Only they don't have any central defenders anymore I suppose.

He did when they were 4-4-2 against Bayern. Maybe other times too, I don't watch them much.

What has demonstrated Pogba's weaknesses more than anything else this season is that everyone has to carefully accommodate him when they're considering how United should play - including Mourinho.

I think his transfer fee is irrelevant. Particularly in a discussion of how he effects the team, since he would still be getting overrun in a midfield two if he cost four quid. Last night he was in and out of the game, but he still created the first goal out of nothing, should have scored two himself (his finishing is crap), and - as has been the case all season - would have registered a couple of assists had his teammates (mainly 'Zlatan') not wasted so many chances. I don't have any problem with him at all.

Also, Ronaldo does nothing aside from score a billion goals but he also doesn't need to have the team built around his style of play. The rest of the team can do as they please, he'll still score his goals. Not even nearly the same as what's being suggested about Pogba.

My argument is fair, the transfer fee is very relevant regardless of whatever minor part of my point you want to grab on to.

Messi hasn't had a transfer fee and Bale and Ronaldo play in the same team so very much aren't playing in the same position. I think it was revealed his fee was lower than Ronaldos too.

Anyway, I'm not saying that if you name the best team in the world all 11 will 100% cost the most money. It's a generalisation. He's not in the top 10 centre mids in the world in my book when he should be, if he's going for that price. See examples like Zidane, Rui Costa, Kaka, Nedved etc going for world record or close to it fees at that point in time in the same position.

Even if he had been £30m his performances haven't been worth that so it's fair to criticise when it's 3 times that and he's nowhere near that good.

I think if he hasn't kicked on next season then you would have a point, Adamski. As it is, £100M (as funny as it was at the time) is based mostly on the potential he has as well. He's been pretty average by all accounts this season but then so has the entire United squad and the Premier League is a different world compared to that of Serie A.

He needs a bit more game intelligence, a bit of composure and some consistency in his decision making but having just turned 24 it should still come in time. If he hits his peak in 2/3 years time and continues in that vein of form then United have a bargain, if not, just another expensive flop to add to the many.

I'm simply pointing out how arbitrary and pointless your argument is, which keeps shifting with every post. For example, Bale and Ronaldo play in the same position insofar as they are (were) both wide-playing forwards. If you want to be so specific as to say that one is on the right and one is on the left, then Pogba's competition is other left-sided central midfielders performing a specific role, rather than 'centre mids' generally. Is he in the top ten of those? More than likely, I would have thought.

As for comparing him with other previous [near] record fees, Madrid spending seventy million euros on Zinedine Zidane in 2001 is equivalent to United buying somebody for over three-hundred million today. Wages have inflated at a similar rate, since Zidane used to earn just over a hundred grand a week at Madrid. It's a completely stupid comparison, however generalised you want to make it. You might as well measure everybody against Eric Cantona costing a million quid, and then nobody is a good signing.

He has been good, is still improving, and, more importantly as far as his transfer fee goes, the club can build their marketing operations around him for the next decade. In three years it will look like a bargain, although I'm sure you will still be pushing this like when Saint was still insisting that Michael Essien was the best player in the world up until about 2013.
