Would I get an accurate representation of it from the first five minutes or so? Because I watched that far and didn't think much of it.

I did the same as Disco. They were in a spaceship or something.

Might give it another go as everyone seems mad on it.

It's majestic.

Properly dark at times though.

I only know about it through memes/screenshots of 4chan hating Reddit for liking it, but it sounds pretty lame.

Not really. It opens up very broadly but once it really gets going it's basically the program that Futurama should have been.

From reading this it's definitely not what I imagined it was. Any time I seen the name I thought it was something along the lines of Bottom. Is it animated?

My girlfriend and I started it last night, 3 episodes in we're unsure.

The cronenberg episode is the best one. Or the alien memory parasites one.

The best episodes tend to be the darkest ones. The Meeseeks got right on my nerves, but the rest of the episode was good enough that it didn't matter much, and it lead to a good little background sight gag in the episode with the Jerry Daycare.

Yeah, it's one of the best, if not the best, animated series I've ever seen.

It's probably third best for me.

South Park
Archer
Rick and Morty
Bojack Horseman
Bob's Burgers

Last two are pretty even.

I hold Rick and Morty above Archer, even if I do love Archer as well.

South Park might indeed win it though, just through the merit of maintaining such a high quality for such a long time (even increasing it).

I tried it, but I found 'Rick' to be just unbearably irritating.

It took me ages to get past the burp-pauses in Rick's speaking style. It really grated on my nerves, and I didn't think it was a particularly good joke to begin with.

I think they eased off on it as the series progressed, and I warmed to it a little more. It's not top tier, but it's pretty good.

EDIT: For me, the top tier is (in no particular order) Futurama, Bob's Burgers, and classic Simpsons.

Archer at its best is the closest to reaching that tier. It's definitely on the very edge. Rick and Morty is firmly in the second tier, which is still pretty good, but knocks it from "must watch as new episodes appear" status down into "will binge watch a few new ones when I have a chance" territory.

I reckon it's far more intelligent with its use of genre conventions and 'hard' sci-fi than Futurama ever was. Both main characters are hugely irritating at times (Rick's burping and any time Morty goes samaritan being the primary offenders) but the show in general is smart enough to blow past those problems. Even the guest casting tends to have about three layers of jokes built in, so it's no surprise it's going to be about two years between seasons, the premiere excepted.

Rick and Morty is far smarter about genre and pop culture. Futurama was a lot "nerdier" in its subtle science, history, and general knowledge gags. Which makes sense when you compare Dan Harmon to David X. Cohen.

Either way though, I'll always prefer Futurama because it had a lot more heart. Even though I enjoy Rick and Morty on an intellectual level, I feel absolutely nothing for Rick, Morty, or anyone else in that crapsack universe. I'll always require characterisation for a show to make it into the top tier.

John

Rick and Morty has strong, consistent characterisation, but pretty much everyone in it is on some level a self serving arsehole so it's necessarily lacking in the 'heart' department. It's smart enough that I reckon they could get whatever emotional reaction they wanted to, it's just that they only ever shoot for sadness and horror.

I don't see them doing much pop culture referencing either, aside from things like casting Tricia Helfer and James Callis in an episode featuring sentient robots and having the former play more than one role. I didn't see every episode of Futurama, but I remember a load of pop culture jokes from that.

Did Futurama maintain its quality throughout, or did the non-nerds start to get sick of it however many series in? I ask because the best of Classic Simpsons is literally perfect television.

It did, although it benefited from being shorter - the original four seasons are consistently excellent, with season four being the best of them all.

It wasn't as consistent in its comeback, but it still hit the same peaks. I think of that as non-classic Futurama, like non-classic Simpsons.

It's a deliberate choice. It just reduces my ability to enjoy it, because they're terrible assholes.

Futurama made pop culture jokes, but they weren't the bread and butter - they weren't generally more sophisticated than having William Shatner play William Shatner in the most William Shatneresque way possible. They certainly didn't riff off genre conventions in the same way as Rick and Morty does. Which is fine, because there's more than one way to be clever.

What Futurama lacked in pop cultural pointedness it more than made up for in characterisation, but I appreciate that everyone has different measures for what they want out of a cartoon.

Where's the line between "Classic" and "Non-classic" Simpsons?

Having watched most of them at least up to some point, I know it went shit at some point, but was there like a defining moment for that?

Also it was pretty crude when it started. I saw some episodes from the very first season recently and that was a little jarring.

It wasn't so good in the early run when they had Bart as the main focus. Once it shifted to Homer as the main focus that was when it got brilliant.

No idea when it turned shit. 2002.

The first is a little creaky as you say. Season eight is probably the last great season. The next few after that have their moments but it's never really the same. The fourth is literally flawless television from start to finish.
