View Full Version : What do you put on your toast?

We're not talking anything too fancy here. If you just want a quick snack, what is your preferred spread?

Personally I love marmite, but I try not to buy it because I'll go through half a loaf in one sitting.

Just butter for me. Very occasionally I might put some jam on, if I'm feeling adventurous.

I don't eat toast as a snack, only as part of a cooked breakfast so just butter.

90% of the time it's butter. Sometimes I'll go with jam, HP or very occasionally ketchup, but that's only usually if there's nothing else to put on it.

Butter. Occasionally a smashed boiled egg.

Toast itself is great though. Let's not forget that.

Just butter, but plenty of it.

It depends on the bread (I rarely have bread at home though, tend to stick to rye these days).

Good (wholemeal, crusty, thick) bread - Avocado, hummus and chilli sauce
Bad (squishy, processed, white - see 'Warburtons Toastie') bread - Marmite and Lurpak

Normally just butter. Blueberry jam is good. As is this stuff:

What a bellend. Do you really stick to those rules?

Ah, I forgot about chocolate spreads. Again, I try not to keep them in the house because I'd eat stupid amount. Nutella and peanut butter is divine. My mate bought me that Reese's spread and I'd eaten it within two days, most of it in one evening.

Of course not, you offensive prick. Who the hell has toast rules (well apart from crumb collateral related rules)?

They were the first couple of things that came to mind as they're the most frequent things I'd have. If I'm having to grab shite bread it's doesn't really go with sloppy avo and hummus and the weight tends to be an issue for it, hence leaving that topping for the crusty stuff, but I will also have marmite on the crusty stuff, or even more occasionally a bit of chocolate spread.

It's just that if I'm going to make the effort of getting good bread then I'm likely to go the whole hog and have the avo-hummus-chilli combo that's my favourite.

It's annoying to get toast bread here that doesn't taste like shite (I think they put sugar in it or something for Americans) so when I do it's always for cheese on toast.

Unless its spreadable cheese, keep it out of this thread. I'll make a thread for solid food on toast if there's enough demand for it.

I almost never eat toast or any other white bread, but when I do I prefer red pesto unless I want something sweet in which case I'll go for nutella or raspberry jam. The sweet options are almost solely for hotel breakfasts though as we rarely have either in the fridge.

Each to their own. Green pesto is a bit bland for my liking (although I use it if we're out of red). Homemade harissa (hi, Merse) is the stuff of dreams on bread but it's not often I bother to make that.

Sun-dried tomato pesto is the greatest food known to man. Or the greatest food known to man that's preparable in under 120 seconds anyway.

Pesto and gnocchi.

Knock it up in two minutes, and it's an amazing meal. Add things as required for taste.

Yeah. I assume normal bread is anything non-brown. It isn't that good with rye bread.

There are a lot of low quality pestos is an a jar out there, to be fair.

niko_cee
04-04-2017, 11:47 AM
Is there a type that comes in a jar that isn't low quality?

Anyway, salted Guernsey butter, or marmite, or jam. Pesto is decent as well, although that's more time of day dependent.

Butter, Jam or Marmelade & Cheese.

If I don't have any Jam / Marmelade, then just Butter and cheese, but that's really a bit of a poor toast imo.
Occasionally some cucumber if I've got that lying around as well.

On a saturday morning (cause there's time), I'll add boiled egg, or scrambled, like John (of course I won't have marmelade then, I'm not a barbarian).

I wouldn't eat a toast without at least cheese or egg unless I was starving, I don't think.

Jimmy Floyd

Honey and cheese (preferably sheep's cheese) is the true answer to this, but if I do that ever again I'll have a heart attack.

Forgot about honey. Honey & Cheese is indeed a pretty awesome combo.

By the way I really envy the Bransons Pickle you get in England. That with a bit of Mature Cheddar is all a man needs. Can't really get it around here.

Oh yeah, absolutely. There's almost no recipe that can't be made slightly more interesting by a half-teaspoon of peanut butter.

I more meant that I don't tend to have peanut butter on bread. Should've been clearer.

If we're just talking spreads then, at home - Peanut butter, Speculouus, marmalade, Marmite, raspberry jam and Nutella are probably my most common ones. All with margarine/butter on.

If I'm in some hipster cafe then smashed 'avo (mate), poached eggs, feta, bacon etc.

Beans/Cheese/Eggs if we're talking non-spreadables...

I noticed my Dad putting that on toast the other day as he'd apparently bought it a few weeks back for pancakes. Not something I ever thought would be nice but wasn't bad at all.

Lemon curd always seems a little too sweet for my taste, but if you come over one that isn't too sickly it's fucking mint.
