I'm quite surprised there isn't already a thread for this, but whatever.

I've just started to get into anime over the last month or so. Always been a Studio Ghibli fan, but I'd never bothered with 'proper' anime series, despite intending to do so for ages. I've had a lot of free time lately though so I've been blasting through a few shows on Netflix, and I'm already pretty into it. Just finished Death Note, having previously watched Attack On Titan, Gurren Lagann & Tokyo Ghoul (found the second season online & ploughed through that too), and I'm planning on starting Cowboy Bebop later tonight.

Anyone else a fan? If so, what do you watch, and what would you recommend an anime newbie like myself check out? Got a long list already, but I'm not really sure where to go next once I've done Cowboy Bebop so it'll be interesting to see what suggestions, if any, you guys come up with.

My nerdy black mate who loves anime says full metal alchemist is the best, so that I guess. I'm willing to recommend Neon Genesis Evangelion, based on nothing more than my cultured, poncy mate who hates anime saying it is really good and it having a fucking boss opening theme:

Paedo.

That's pretty devastating coming from the king of the sexual deviants.

That theme :D Aren't both of those shows a thousand episodes long? Even I don't have quite a high enough time/interest ratio to go through that many episodes of a single series at this stage. I'm holding off on Bleach for the same reason. They'll get watched at some point though, I should think.

When Sci-Fi did a load of manga films a few years back I quickly got in and out of Japan's whole schtick.

"Ooh, Akira's nice to look at and it's probably telling a cool story."
"Ooh, Ghost in the Shell is good and the dull robot woman having her tits out isn't sexualised in any way."
"Oh, Violence Jack. A morality play with violence and rape? Thanks. Really."

I might give a shit about Beserk but I reckon From Software's lifted all the parts that matter.

Have only watched a few, but my favourites are Code Geass and Death Note.

The recent movie Your Name was excellent, as was The Girl Who Leapt Through Time which came out a few years ago.

I think I have The Girl Who Leapt Through Time unwatched somewhere in my DVD collection. 10 Centimetres Per Second is supposed to be brilliant as well.

Code Geass is one I've seen on Netflix but not really heard much about. Will look into it in more detail. I really liked the first third of Death Note, but it kind of tailed off after then...

As soon as Light wiped his own mind & sat around for five episodes not doing anything it started to drag, then killing off L with a third of the show left was another disappointment. The battle of wits between the two of them was what made the show for me, so killing of L & then replacing him with someone who was exactly the same as him seemed really stupid.

Still 7/10, but could have been an 8 or 9 if they'd cut it down a bit & kept it focused around Light vs L

As for the rest of you, you're all bastards :D

Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Berserk, the rest are wank.

Ghost in the Shell is probably the coolest movie ever when it aired but The Matrix grew upon it and destroyed it at the same time. That movie is going to be garbage, they even fucked up the soundtrack somehow.

The Champloo soundtrack is one of the best albums to ever exist

So much variety and it's all so good. There's even a Samurai who turns out to be a posing piece of shit with his own beatbox crew.

If anything in this has convinced you to watch it, skip the dubbed version and watch subtitled. What a show. Cowboy Bebop can be watched in English though, it might even be better.

And on Cowboy Bebop I think this sums it up quite well

Went through a phase of watching a lot 5 or so years ago. Death Note was amazing. Other notable stuff I enjoyed was Air Gear and Beck.

I don't know what counts as anime but apparently the TV series of Afro Samurai does, and that's great. It's got a really cool feel to it. Samuel L Jackson is the lead voice actor. RZA produced the soundtrack.

I've watched a few of the Studio Ghibli things. They were pretty good and knew how to draw you in.
