Aye they're inviting a couple of Northern Irish and a couple of Welsh sides in to compete, for reasons passing understanding.

Can't see much benefit for anyone in it. The costs of travel to any games would be more than anything to be made from it. It's not like Sligo or Bray have an army of fans wanting a day out either.

Fantastic finish from Draxler, he's started well. Rabiot and Verratti on form too. Would love to see the latter in at City or Arsenal.

Rabiot is a cross between Fellaini and Luiz but with a million times more talent.

Reg
14-02-2017, 08:55 PM
It's more like Barca are with 10. Messi is doing nothing when they're out of possession, which is fine against Osasuna, but it's hurting them here.

The whole team looks like they've not been training, or even been getting off the sofa, for about two weeks. They seem to be just relying on their touch without any thought or urgency.

Magic

Cavani still isn't good enough to be top level IMO. He needs 3-4 chances to score, which is 2-3 chances too many when compared to strikers like Aguero, Suarez or Lewandoski who will score at least 1 in 2 chances or more.

Sid Lowe's arguing that Luis Enrique's finished. It would make sense, given last night's result, the way they played, and the presumed failure to win the league, but also the perception of the local media.

Skip to the last four paragraphs for the papers' stuff. https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2017/feb/15/barcelona-luis-enrique-humiliation-paris-saint-germain-champions-league?CMP=fb_a-football_b-gdnfootball

Somebody somewhere will be blaming Mesut Oezil for this.

Reg
15-02-2017, 09:16 PM
Am I missing something with Thiago tonight? I know he's scored two goals but the way Hargreaves is going on about him it's like it's a once-in-a-career performance. Vidal and Alonso have been the ones controlling the game in my eyes.

Magic

Again they've all been excellent. Another midfield total annihilation performance.

Lewis
15-02-2017, 09:21 PM
Somebody somewhere will be blaming Mesut Oezil for this.

Quite a lot of people, actually. Where do him and 'Alexis' go this summer? The top, top clubs probably have better options, so I'll go Italy with the former and 'Atleti' (or China, since he seems the gypo type) with the latter.

Jimmy Floyd
15-02-2017, 09:25 PM
Ozil would look good in an armband, so they might as well leave him here. Sanchez will go and waste his life at Juventus. Or back to Barcelona when they have an OVERHAUL.

15-02-2017, 09:59 PM
That was a hilarious second half. Almost as bad as Sanchez getting three chances to make up for he worlds worst penalty.

This is where you cry for a new manager but I'm 100% sure we're certified as a slightly better version of Spurs for the next few decades so it doesn't matter who takes charge.

GS
15-02-2017, 10:24 PM
There's a clear risk in Wenger going, but this is about seven years in a row of the exact same thing. At least finishing 7th one year would give you something new to talk about.

Lewis
15-02-2017, 10:37 PM
Aubameyang off there, like the gimp he is.

He's a China candidate if ever there was one.

I don't know why people choose games like this to have a pop at Arsene Wenger. Out of all of these last sixteen defeats, it's only Monaco (and maybe Milan) that they should have beaten, so as far as reasonable expectations go their League Cup defeat to Southampton is the far bigger concern.

Max Power
15-02-2017, 10:45 PM
It's the manner of the defeats surely? They seem to get pumped way more than a club their size should. Getting knocked out by Bayern is fair enough, but conceding four in a half is pretty fucking shit.

Lewis
15-02-2017, 10:53 PM
I'm not saying that they aren't mentally weak, and that that isn't his fault, but why kick off tonight? Tonight changes nothing, and yet the BBC is leading with 'Can Arsenal, and Arsene Wenger, recover from this mauling?' What constitutes a recovery, and how will it differ from their two years since collapsing against Monaco?

Smiffy
15-02-2017, 11:28 PM

Lewis
15-02-2017, 11:33 PM
I just look at these things strategically, rather than obsessing with the wank, which means I don't see how we now know things about Arsenal/Arsene Wenger that we didn't know this afternoon (or five years ago).

GS
15-02-2017, 11:56 PM
We don't, but those five years demonstrate fairly emphatically that it's not going to improve.

Walcott is a top, top parallel actually. He's been threatening to "reach his potential" for as long as Arsenal have been "threatening to break through". You'd be hard pressed to argue that either of them are materially better than five years ago.

Ultimately you pretty much know what's going to happen in the league and Europe, and the only year-on-year variable is the FA Cup. You could probably get away with picking the season up in January and only watching the cup games, with the potential bonus that their U15 side may not have been eliminated from the "EFL Cup sponsored by no-one" by then.

Walcott is a top, top parallel actually. He's been threatening to "reach his potential" for as long as Arsenal have been "threatening to break through". You'd be hard pressed to argue that either of them are materially better than five years ago.

This is kind of like a chicken - egg situation almost. You're right about Walcott, and about Arsenal. But Arsenal as a team is actually full of Walcotts. Wilshere, Oxlade Chamberlain, Welbeck, Ramsey, Chambers (?)... All of these players seem to have stellar moments, and then turn to shit or get injured. Come back next season, have a few stellar moments, then fall away.

Now as Arsenal has so many players like this, the whole team is like that as a consequence. Or is it the mentality of the club that makes players a bit lazy, so they don't work themselves into games? See Ozil, who was a bit of a don at Dortmund and Real as well to be honest. He had a shit first season, but then a great one, now he's shit again and will, just before the summer, surely go on an amazing spell proving his "worth". When he got to Arsenal, he adopted the Arsenal mentality of only running with the wind in your back.

It always seem to me as if when transfer windows approach, these inconsistent players seem to go on a decent spell, and Wenger decides "NOW is the time of Oxlade Chamberlain and besides, guys, we have Sanogo don't you know?" - so he doesn't buy anyone. And then the pressure is kind of off, and Oxlade goes back to being a bit anonymous, and so does everyone else.

Coquelin is another example. He seemed great last year when he came back from Watford or what it was and all of a sudden the "Powerful midfielder" problem was solved, and Arsenal didn't end up going for William Carvalho or whoever was the hot news that summer. And now, it seems to me Coquelin is just extremely immobile and always sort of one step behind. He's very often not where he should have been when Arsenal concede attacks that end in goals (which might make Mustafi worse than he actually is, though he does seem pretty bad recently).

You're describing the very well known Arsenal cycle. It's been the same for about 10 years, how exactly is this news to anyone?

At least they're not using "style of play" as justification for failure any more.

It's not news. It's more remarkable that it keeps going on. It almost feels like everyone are a bit frustrated by Arsenal, even the people who don't even support them sometimes.

From a competitive perspective, I'd say 2005-2012 felt like a dominant period. 8 teams in the final in 8 years, 3 winners, and a lot of semi final appearances too.

I would go 2005 to 2009, when we usually had two/three of our teams in the Champions' League semi-finals (2011 was only United, and 2012 was a freak), but the scheme appears to have been floated in 2004, which means it probably got binned when Jose Mourinho MIND GAMED Anders Frisk into an early grave.

Add to that the Europa League. Three finalists and one winner. Liverpool were in the final last year!? I... I mean, I probably watched it but can't remember.

Full strength Tottenham 1-0 down at Gent. Pray for the coefficient.

We actually could come under a bit of pressure from Italy next season. Only 0.4 ahead as it stands (for comparison, the gap from us up to Spain is a full 25 points). The season after that, we stand 2 points behind Italy and would lose our 4th spot.

Ancient Macedonia falls mostly within modern Greece, to put it mildly Greeks aren't fans of Skopian appropriation of the name. You're really better off not mentioning it to any Greeks you might meet.

We should be 3rd, probably. Italy treat the Europa with more respect than we do so it's no surprise they're close. Juventus in a CL final might have given them a huge bump as well(?).

We're nowhere near as good as the top Spanish teams, but we should give Germany good competition in the next few years now that Dortmund have fallen off a little bit.
