I'm not sure if there's already a tablet thread, but I'm making this one.
After Christmas I've discovered that I didn't ever spend any of the ridiculous anachronistic vouchers that I get from extended family last year, and have another round this year too, so I have a shitload of Amazon credit and have been wondering if I should spend some of this on a tablet. Now, the reason I'm not quite sure is that I really don't know if I actually need a tablet. I currently have a phone and a laptop which share the burden as joint nerve centres of western civilisation, the laptop having documents and that, while the phone is a pretty swish Korean model and has all my communications (I use email, text and whatsapp A LOT, calls rarely), plus things like Spotify. The system works well. In extremis I can even use the phone to watch TV, as I have loads of data in my contract and there is wifi in my home.
As such, there is no obvious gap in my life for a tablet, and yet, as some idiot once said, the people don't know what they want until you give it to them. And all the people who do have tablets can't be wrong. So tell me, tablet warriors, what advantages are there to having a tablet as opposed to not having one? For reference, I'm looking at something like this (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01AHBEJTE/ref=s9_acsd_top_hd_bw_bT5mYR_c_x_2_w?pf_rd_m=A3P5R OKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-5&pf_rd_r=K2A7K9AB8XP5V9NQRCKE&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=92e60ee7-f48f-5766-9835-657a730bf825&pf_rd_i=429892031&th=1) or a bit more expensive, up to say the £130-150 mark tops. I'll not be shelling out for a top of the market one so you can forget those.
Have you looked at the Kindle Fire?
Might be something to consider if you want to read ebooks and that.

It sounds like you don't need a tablet.

I got the one you linked to at Christmas. I really like it. I probably didn't really need it but I do use it a fair bit now. It's handier than using my desktop for just browsing and I find it a lot easier to read long articles on.
If you do go for the Amazon one, sideload the Google Play Store onto it so you aren't just restricted to Amazon's app store. It's really easy to do.

Why does my mum have one, then?

That's what I want to hear, Mr Boyd.

Because her and your old man ran out of things to buy each other fifteen years ago.

If you're happy using the laptop, you don't need a tablet. I would normally be all for them for size, etc but since I've got back into FM I have the laptop out more and the tablet gathers dust.
That said, I don't read. So if you do then it might be worth it, but stick to 8" or less. Even if I was picking up a book on Google Play, I think I'd read it on the phone over a 10" tablet.
.
If you have the money then a tablet is a good purchase. They are handier than laptops. Since I've gone from a smaller phone to a bigger phone I find myself using my laptop to browse less. So if I had a tablet I suspect this change would be even more pronounced.
Great for browsing, watching stuff, reading.... shopping.
Speaking about iPads, of course. Never used anything else. My mum has some Amazon Fire tablet and seems to like it well enough.
I used my tablet for the first month or so, but I find myself just using my phone now.

I use my iPad less than I did originally, basically never in the house, but it's a cracking travel companion, which is why I got it really. It's much better for rugby trips, especially where I'm wanting to watch the matches the day before/after the one I'm attending whilst travelling home (I tend to schedule flights to ensure I'll be able to watch the games), along with the obvious in flight/on train entertainment itself.

I only use my tablet for reading graphic novels. Which it's great for, in fairness.

Tablets are shit. I only use my iPad for streaming TuneIn. Phone is comfortably big enough for casual browsing/social creeping and anything over that is laptop job.
People who watch films on their tablet :harold:.

I think tablets are useful for people with poor sight. If you're not blind and you want more stuff to fit on your phone screen then change the resolution settings.

I used my tablet constantly until I got my laptop, I barely touch it now.

Also, if you're considering the Fire 8 then the Nvidia Shield K1 is a better machine for around the same money.
EDIT: Sorry, not the same money. But within the budget.

In the cold light of Monday, I'm edging towards not getting one. Thanks all.
Will just have to carry on saving up for one of these instead: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Box-Canvas-Print-Paul-Ross/dp/B001N6W8U0

We can't talk about Paul Ross without bringing up his 'meow meow' binge.

I want to be able to download Amazon Video, Netflix and Kodi and watch it on the go.
That's it, come at me.

When you say watch it on the go do you mean via mobile data?
Don't Prime Video and Netflix both offer offline viewing? Prime definitely does. Netflix is maybe working on it.

No. Just wifi is fine. I'll watch offline on the go.
Fire tablet is down to £35 for 8Gb. Seems decent.

Yeah, the Fire tablet is a brilliant budget option.
Make sure to load Google play on it though.
Surely if you're watching tv / movie you want a better screen than that cheap piece of crap?

Not too fussed. It's only for travelling and/or my 1 year old to watch things on.

I got a couple of those fire tablets when they were on some ridiculous discount. Ideal for kids. Under £30 for something that would have been the wonder of the age a decade ago is just batshit.

I've ordered it so will see what it's like. She won't know the difference so small price to pay.
You never said it was for a one year old. :moop:
Do her a favour and buy her a picture book instead.

Typical modern parent dumping some fucking tablet in front of it rather than human and loving parental engagement.

It's for on the aeroplane. She'll have her books etc but sometimes this is the only thing that calm her down so good to have the option

I'm sure human and loving parental engagement is absolutely abundant at your house.

I use an iPad for all of my lecturing. It's actually quite good, as long as you have a pen stylus.
It doesn't replace a computer for me, but it's helpful when I travel or present. But it's definitely a luxury as opposed to a necessity.
