A mere 26 months after buying my flat, I've finally put my pictures/clock on the wall. Foe with a hammer is not a pretty sight, but the only holes in the walls in the flat (for the most part) were planned.

How handy are you chaps? I know Andy does it for a living (is he still about?).

QUESTION: I've I'm putting up a LACK Ikea shelf to store DVDs, do I need to use wall plugs, or can I just smash in some pretty hefty screws like I've done for my pictures?

Wall plugs, and drill down at about a 20° angle. Never fall.

Ah. There lies my problem. I have no drill. :(

Pick up a mains one in B&Q very cheap for light household stuff. Get a pack of red wall plugs and a 5mm masonry bit. For most indoor walls you wouldn't need hammer action on the drill.

If it's plasterboard you need additional bits.

In the last 6 months I have put up 2 sets of curtains (pole included) a blind, fitted a new doorbell and done countless flat-pack furniture. I'm basically a handyman.

Have to put up a new ceiling fan this week. Can. Not. Be. Arsed

Second shelf is about as stable as Efe Ambrose at the back.

:moop:

At least it's relatively flat. If you squint.

I've bought a hangboard (climbing training kit) and I need to mount it above a doorframe (https://imgur.com/a/KJS2wof).

The wall is plasterboard, so I presume I need to mount the hangboard on to a plank of wood and screw that onto the studs inside the wall. Safe to assume the studs run straight up from either side of the door? The thing needs to support my weight, will that do the job? Also, what sort of screws should I use and do I need to pre-drill the holes?

Don't assume where the studs are. Use a stud finder if need be. Pre-drill the holes. No idea on the screws though.

Plasterboard doesn't mean its 100% wooden stud behind. If its modern it could be metal stud, if it's old it could be dot and dab plaster board on block work.

You are always best with a pilot hole and generally long the better, if it is stud work go with 4x75 wood screws to attach your timber onto the plasterboard. As well so the screws some gripfill behind the timber. As you tighten with the screws you'll get a really good coverage between timber and plasterboard.

To attach the climbing frame to the timber use the screws provided/recommended.

Went to B&Q last night and bought £200 worth of shit to redecorate the bedroom and hall, paint the decking, sort out the muddy patches in the grass and the flower beds. Bring on the lockdown.

I got a Guinness keg off a mate yesterday to make a mash tun. I’ll need to do most of it in work though with the welder.

Any good ways of poisoning birds? I’ve some in the attic and they’ve about a tonne of twigs hauled in to it already.

What kind of birds?

Think they’re crows or something.

I'd leave them. Crows aren't worth messing with.

Can’t leave them as they’ll nest soon and wreck the place.

Just get rid of the nest and block up wherever they're getting in.

So the crows haven't actually done anything bad yet? Just leave them be, it'll be fine.

I can’t. I can’t get to the missing vent under the gutters because I’ve no ladder and there are no tradesmen working at the moment.

Crows are amongst the most intelligent avians and hold grudges so if you mess this up you're fucked.

That would be an emergency so should be easy enough to get someone to sort?

I’m genuinely surprised that you don’t own a ladder.

Nobody will do anything until September at the earliest because there's birds involved.

I own a step ladder but there's not much point in me owning a big painters ladder because I wouldn't go up it anyway.

I actually found a couple of bangers (tiger 10s too) in my wardrobe from a few years ago. I could post them over, for a handsome fee, then you could try lighting them and throwing them up there?
