I don't know if it's my age, but I never used to be a fan of Fairytale. Now, though, I appreciate that it's songwriting at its absolute peak, an artistic and possibly even literary masterpiece. Structurally perfect, conceptually brilliant. Appreciate it here, and post other, inferior Christmas songs for our listening delectation.

I must have heard this song a lot of times, but I've never once absorbed the lyrics, so I've no idea what it's actually about.

The tune's grown on me over time though.

It is a brilliant song by a wonderful band. It was beaten to number one by Always on my Mind by the Pet Shop Boys, but I don't really care because that's brilliant as well.

Honourable mentions to the Waitresses and Jona Lewie,

I'm pretty sure I once watched one of those Channel 4/5 shows about the greatest ... (Christmas song in this case) where they claimed that MacGowan turned up to a gig/recording/something so pissed that he forgot the lines.

Might well be for that performance.

Not surprising of course, fuck knows how he isn't dead yet.

I reckon Christmas Time (Don't Let the Bells End) by the Darkness is pretty great as well, as well as Stay Another Day by East 17.

Oh, and who could forget:

I was just having a look myself as I'd never seen it either, and while it's beyond bad, it did give rise to this via the comments section:

why is brian wearing goalkeeper gloves? the cretin overdosed on ginsters ham and cheese slices and drove his car over his own head...perhaps the goalkeeper gloves question is irrelevant now. merry xmas one and all!!

Stay Another Day was about terminal illness, right?

It was about his brother's suicide. I only just found out.

Suicide according to google.

""Stay Another Day" was the third single from East 17's second album Steam, following up "Around The World" and the album's title track. It was their first ballad, written by the band's lead songwriter Tony Mortimer and said to be about his brother Ollie, who committed suicide. Mortimer was aided in the composition by his co-manager Rob Kean and songwriter Dominic Hawken, who had once been Boy George's keyboard player. Christmas bells were included towards the end of the song to appeal to the lucrative Christmas singles market. The most familiar arrangement is unusual among pop records in that it uses almost no drums, apart from some timpani during the introduction to and towards the end of the track."

Slade did the best Christmas song, and they used to do a belting [H]Okey Cokey at their live shows.

The bassist from one of the later line-ups (Dave Hill [guitar] and Don Powell [drums] still tour with the corpse of it) got engaged to Rose West (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/2683125.stm) via prison letters, only for her to ditch him to spare him the bad publicity, which is a bit harsh when you have to assume that he factored that in.

I had dinner the other day with someone who lives next door to Fred West's brother. He (the brother) claims that Fred was alright really, but went a bit doolally because he was dropped on his head as a child, and Rose manipulated him into it all.

My uncle employs a site manager who is the spit of Fred West, and his nickname is Fred West, so he has a dirty picture of some random porn star in his wallet that he tells people is his daughter, because obviously his only option is to play up to it.

That's something of a stretch even for a family member.

Does everyone have a Fred West story? My mate's uncle used to own some land the rozzers dug up in an effort to find where the bodies were buried.

I love that Nightmare Before Christmas song like no other, it just fills me with joy every time I hear it. However, I've noticed leaking through my mates TV that it appears to be in an advert these days which is a shame. Speaking of animated Christmas songs being bastardised by ads. I saw a minute and a half long advert for crumpets that had the entire muppets cast on. I thought they were banend from advertising?

Partly because it's proper lovely song, but also because it signals Kevin's need to dash home and turn his house into a death-trap.

Heathen.

Fairytale of New York is brilliant but I can't help but think it's a victim of its own success and overplayed to hell.

I could listen to Jona Lewie all day-

Fairytale is shit imo. Christmas In Hollis by Run DMC is the best Christmas song. Stop The Cavalry and The Waitresses make up the rest of the podium.

High five, Jim. My favourite Christmas song. Some great sing/shout-along moments.

I like Kirsty MacColl's other stuff but I can't remember listening to any other songs by the Pogues.

Magowan could never do Rocky Road to Dublin as well as Luke Kelly but it's still my favourite of theirs.

Was always my after hours hallmark in the pub back in my heyday, cunt of a song to do right

My boring contribution was listening to radio 4 on the walk in the other day claiming they should be called carols.

"A carol is in modern parlance a festive song, generally religious but not necessarily connected with church worship, and often with a dance-like or popular character."

Went to the Christmas Eve taping for the Graham Norton show and Carol of the Bells is the musical act at the end.
