Awkward time of year, it's cold first thing in the morning but when the sun comes out it's still pretty warm in the afternoon.

I'm going to cling onto the shorts for now.

Can confirm the hot women in London have commenced hibernation until May. Sad times. No more erections on the underground for the time being.

Last night was the first time I broke out my duvet in months (I was using a blanket) although I probably should have gotten it out a night or two before.

Still not cold enough for the heating though.

One of the best things about the UK, or at least the south, is (presumably because it's a wee island) the temperature resolutely refuses to go below about minus 2, even in weeks-long cold snaps. I can't remember it ever being below minus 4, even once.

Spikey M

I have yet to live in a properly insulated house, but I hope others are better. Not sure though, since it is all built of wood for some reason. In the front garden there is a load of ripped up cardboard (must have flown over when the binmen were unloading this morning) and a fence panel has started to go which a neighbour is trying to fix.

In the back garden some stuff under tarp is now exposed (the tarp hasn't flown off and can't but it's no longer providing much coverage).

Doesn't seem that bad here. I'm sure I played football in worse as a kid.

On that note, I remember arriving at a pitch as a kid and everyone standing around deliberating whether the match should go ahead because of the wind. Not 5 seconds after they took the decision that we should play, half a tree came down across the pitch. There'd have been deaths if we'd been on there at the time, I have zero doubt :D

Power went down for about 6 hours this afternoon. Luckily no damage outside that I can see, and I'd moved all garden furniture/detritus inside last night so we're clear on that front. But dealing with 2 young children for 6 hours without any power was fucking draining.

The weather is really providing some excellent shadenfreude. A few people I know from my hometown are heavily involved with the rugby club and were sharing memes on facebook earlier about how everyone was soft for worrying but they were hard as true Cumbrians. The beer tent marquis area at the club has been ramraided by the storm and they've had to postpone their next fixture :D

Similarly a guy I know I foolishly thought was more intelligent than this posted earlier that he didn't know what all the fuss was about, and it was playing out weather when he was a kid. Just posted a frantic appeal on facebook because the roof has blown off his summer house :D

You guys do seem to get semi-regular flooding, which is a bit baffling when you're permanently on fire too.

Is it just that you don't get any rain at all for years, and then half the Indian Ocean falls on you in 2 days?

Queenslander
26-02-2022, 09:50 AM
I think this is the reason.

Typically, some areas of northern Australia will experience flooding during La Niña because of the increase in tropical cyclone numbers. The relationship between La Niña strength and rainfall is closely linked. The greater the sea surface temperature and SOI difference from normal, the larger the rainfall response 2.

Brits are in for a two-day heatwave - with the Met Office in-turn issuing a heat alert for 'dangerous' 34 degree Celsius weather.

The weather officials have urged large swathes of England to be ready as temperatures are set to skyrocket so high, that a new record could be set for the hottest day in June , since records began.

For context, parts of the South East and London could reach temperatures hotter than Portugal, Jamaica, Costa Rica, the Canary Islands and Cyprus - with the rest of England also set for sunny spells. That's me working from the garden on Thursday and Friday. "Only" 27 in the north west, mind.
