View Full Version : [Football] Gareth Southgate confirmed as England manager
https://www.theguardian.com/football/2016/nov/30/gareth-southgate-confirmed-new-england-manager-football-contract
Gareth Southgate has been confirmed as England’s new manager to replace Sam Allardyce, signing a four-year contract to lead the national team into the 2018 World Cup.
The interim manager, who was interviewed by the FA’s five-man selection panel at St George’s Park last week, agreed a deal through to 2020, with a break clause after the World Cup in Russia that can be triggered by either party. It is understood his salary will be around £1.5m a year.
Southgate was the only candidate interviewed by the governing body. His first game will be a friendly against Germany in Dortmund on 22 March before a World Cup qualifier against Lithuania at Wembley four days later.

I wish him luck but I would really like to know on what basis he, as the only candidate interviewed, has been given a four year contract.
So next game is in four months. That means he'll pick up 500k for literally going to football games on a Saturday. I don't care how much stick and abuse they get, that is an amazing gig.
Good that they carried out the proper due diligence and got their man.

He'll get a nice tax kickback in a few months as well since as a temporary worker he'll have been on the wrong tax code and probably paying too much tax.
God I'm interesting.
Bit distasteful to use that plane crash to sneak out bad news when no one is looking.

I really don't get why you'd just look at Southgate.
I can see him not qualifying for a tournament.

I hope Paul Ince got and interview.

You joke but given that the FA have said they are in favour of the 'Rooney rule', why are they not adhering to it for their own job?

Hopefully they've turned their backs on the load of bollocks that it is.

On one hand it's an odd situation that should really pose a lot of questions, but on the other hand, I'm past caring now.

This is another one of those times where everyone thinks 'you know what? Why the fuck not' and it becomes evident why the fuck not within the first few months.
Ala Allardyce. Ala Trump. Ala Brexit.

Surely Southgate is more of a Clinton, a dull establishment figure. Trump would be getting Jose in.

This would be the kind of thing that made me watch England again. Appointing Southgate just saves me having to watch boring 0-0 draws away at Slovenia and the like. If we're going to be shit, at least let's have a lol along the way. This is just dull.

I'm very much in this camp as well.
Although obviously I reserve the right to instantly become totally emotionally invested in the whole thing once the World Cup starts and then join in with the baying mob when we inevitably crash out in disgraceful fashion.

No I meant in the sense that we all know it's a terrible decision but just maybe.

He knew that, he just wanted a reason to say what he said.

Is it actually a terrible decision? Who should they have chosen?
It just seems very boring to me.
The best appointment would have been to realise Big Sam is actually the best man for the job and his secretly recorded interview was a non-story.

I don't know. It's easier to criticise what they have done than what they might have done.
Who should they have chosen?
Wenger.

There are no other options. Let's just see this out until Eddie Howe fancies a challenge.

Just listen to the bullshit Martin Glenn is coming out with. The biggest buffoon in sport today and that's saying something.
