Andy Murray will win but I'd give it to Adam Peaty.

Get a poll up.

Only 10 options allowed (fix that someone ffs) so Vardy, Max Whitlock, Danny Willett and some gay equestrian and hockey people miss out.

Murray. Became the first British world number one ever, ousted Djokovic (who was looking invincible and holding all four slams), and won six tournaments in a row.

I don't even like the guy but it's an obvious choice.

Why is it you hate Murray again?

Dour Scottish cunt with a very punchable face and a horrible attitude at times.

I don't hate him nearly as much as it comes across on here though.

I do think it would be brilliant for Peaty to win though, regardless of who he was up against. He was fucking brilliant in the Olympics.

His leg in the 4x100m relay was fucking incredible.

The Davis Cup was a huge achievement. He deserves to win it again this year. He's probably our best ever athlete, so you can't really argue with it.

Lol.

Best ever tennis player, perhaps.

It should have been Hamilton last year, off the top of my head.

4th most popular sport in the world according to this (http://www.totalsportek.com/most-popular-sports/).

If you're talking about 'best ever British footballer or cricketer' then you're not really talking about best athlete.

If you're including rugby over tennis then you're just silly.

Are they all nominated for sports/events which were on the BBC? I'm pretty sure they are.

As if winning the Masters doesn't get you in ahead of women's boxing and whatever other crap there is in the Olympics. The track cycling wankathon needs to end as well before they all start regretting it.

Lewis
28-11-2016, 11:08 PM
Daley Thompson is presumably our greatest 'athlete' (him and Geoff Capes), but sportsman opens up loads of people. I'm not saying it is Bobby Charlton, but he is widely recognised as one of the greatest players ever. Is Andy Murray higher up the respective tennis rankings? Same goes for Lennox Lewis, or Jimmy Wilde. These were all-time greats in their field. Cricket, Jim Clark... The cycling mob have a better claim too.

Jimmy Floyd
28-11-2016, 11:13 PM
There must be 10 tennis players who shit on Murray. Federer, Borg, Sampras, McEnroe, Djokovic, Laver, there I've named six and I don't know anything about tennis.

I'd put Jim Clark in the mix to be our greatest sportsman, if driving counts as a sport.

Lewis

Was he a professional skeet shooter as well, or was that Jackie? I'd like to think our greatest ever athlete is someone who does a sport that requires no physical effort. Like Ronnie O'Sullivan or somebody.

If your greatest ever sportsperson is a tennis player then that's the final nail in the empire.

We never claim to be an empire, fallen or otherwise.

I don't know really though, I don't care enough about other sports. If you ask enough people they'll probably mostly say some rugby dickhead.

To be honest it's probably not worth explaining. I don't really like the sport anyway, so it wouldn't really matter even if we had a proper national side.

All Ireland is just the country Ireland. There's no such place as the one that makes up the rugby team bar being a geographical island. It's an amalgamated side of Ireland and Northern Ireland and there's too many concessions made to appease the huns of the latter.
Northern Ireland should have it's own team or, being British, their players should be playing with one of the other British teams.

There's a crowd of tossers pushing to take our football team away in the very same way currently. Then it would really matter, though I can't see it happening thankfully.

Queenslander
29-11-2016, 08:47 AM
Fair enough then. Feel free to jump on the very bumpy Wobblies band wagon if like? Only problem is the worst All Black fans will somehow find you and ear rape you untill you start bringing up Rugby League.

Queenslander
29-11-2016, 08:57 AM
It used to be. The 90's was my Rugby League peak because players came in shapes and sizes. I bore everyone with this chat but there are only 4 specialist positions 1, 6, 7 and 9. Outside of that all players can play multiple positions.

Lewis
29-11-2016, 11:58 AM
True (and even then you can get away without specialist full-backs).

It was like the virtue signalling World Championship.

Sky have sacked the poor bastard. That puts them in an awkward position when Phil Taylor retires into punditry.

Some organisation that represents victims has reported it to the police as a 'hate crime'. Ladies and gentlemen, rack and ruin, hell in a handcart.

I'd put Jim Clark in the mix to be our greatest sportsman, if driving counts as a sport.

Probably add Nadal, Connors and Agassi to that list.

That said (and it's oft repeated) Murray would have been held in even higher regard (and won more) than he is now if he wasn't playing in the same era as three of the greatest players of all time.

Sir Andy Mahowry
29-11-2016, 02:15 PM
Which era would he have fared better in? It's not like all the other eras didn't have brilliant players.

I'd have liked him to go against Pistol Pete et al tbh, seeing him getting dicked about at Wimbledon by the great Greek would have been wanktastic.

Byron
29-11-2016, 02:19 PM
Well if he was coming through now, with Djokovic, Wawrinka and Nishikori for a start. Or Becker's era when he was playing finals against Curren and Chang.

Reg
29-11-2016, 02:23 PM
There are arguably dozens of players greater than Murray, after all he's 'only' won 3 slams. But they're not British. And it's not like Bobby Charlton is regularly mentioned in the same breath as Pele, Maradona, Cruyff, Ronaldo etc.

Jimmy Floyd
29-11-2016, 02:35 PM
Nick Faldo won six golf majors, and they are harder for a top player to win than tennis majors are as you have to beat the entire field rather than just the 7 you are drawn against.

Lewis
29-11-2016, 02:53 PM
Then provided Charlton (or George Best, or whoever Scotland want to put forward) is in the top 'dozens' of footballers, which he obviously would be because he was brilliant and won everything, he has a much stronger claim.

Jimmy Floyd
29-11-2016, 03:55 PM
I've only just twigged that Chris Froome didn't get on the shortlist for this year's award. Surely one Tour de France win exceeds every track medal in history combined.
