I doubt having an armed guard at a school would move the statistical likelihood of your child being killed in a school massacre very much, in the grand scheme of things, and would in all probability displace whatever tiny marginal gain you'd have on that front with an equally tiny chance of the guard going postal or accidentally shooting them.

You are right that there is probably no answer, but that line of thinking applies to more guns being the answer as well. It isn't.

Well, apart from actual gun control, that is the answer, but isn't on the table, so yeah, thoughts and prayers and RIP in pieces and all that.

This is the truth. No such thing as an armed force that has a zero percent accidental shooting rate. I mean, when I went through basic we did the following:

8 hours of instruction prior to even touching our assigned weapon. And we always had to get and return them to the armory.

2 days of learning to carry them without pointing them at anyone and constantly cleaning the fucking things.

First time we took ammo out to go to the range someone nearly got shot. Stored at a completely different location and every bullet needed to be account led for.

Pretty much everyone who went through basic that I’ve ever met can tell a story of someone almost getting shot at a range.

So you are introducing some level of accidental shooting risk. How many schools are there in the US? 30,000? 300,000? It is a big country. Say 1% rate of accidental shooting in a system of 30,000 schools. That’s 3,000 shootings a year to stop 337 since the 90’s?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_in_English_law

...there are certain circumstances where a death will be treated as murder even if the defendant did not wish to kill the actual victim. This is called "transferred malice", and arises in two common cases:

The defendant intended serious harm to one or more persons, but an unintended other person dies as a result;

Appears so, yeah.

Surely a grown adult can overpower a 6 year old?

People wanted lockdowns, and people wanted to sanction a commodities superpower, so people can't complain about inflation or interest rate rises. I can, but people can't.

The point being that if you started raising interest rates sooner(bear in mind their first rate rise was 0.15%) in December 21 it wouldn’t have been such a shock to the system.

By not taking action earlier when people had extra money in their pockets after lockdown because the couldn’t spend fuck all they have made the inflation at the back end here far worse and are then surprised that when food inflation is running at 15/16% that people want to ask for pay rises.

Lewis

Raising interest rates won't do shit when it's the cost of things that people need that are driving inflation. It was fine to keep them as low as they were as there was no reason to raise them and there still isn't a reason to raise them now - an entirely different solution is required and until people start talking about that the things that are said are akin to the discussed solution to the HOUSING CRISIS for all the good they'll do.

The Brecon Beacons are to be renamed over concerns that the word “beacon” is out of step with the fight against climate change.

The national park will now be officially referred to as the “Bannau Brycheiniog” National Park, granting the landscape a Welsh name, and steering clear of any associations with historical signal fires.

Officials said the symbol of a flaming beacon emitting carbon “does not fit with the ethos” of the national park as an eco-friendly organisation.

the trans people in sport is a genuine debate, and on balance I probs do think they shouldn't be allowed to compete with cis women, but I really hate mad terfs pretending to give a shit about women's sport when it suits them.

I'm pretty sure Glinner hasn't watched more than about half an hour of women's sport in his life, apart from maybe perving over netball a bit during the Olympics. It's also disingenuous, cus they're not really using it as a reason to ban trans women from women's sport - they actually just don't want them to exist at all.

it's also an example of how insane it is that people are readily accepting that trans women are the main threat to women, which is batshit. JK Rowling and co are happily getting into bed with very repressive people who are anti abortion and outwardly homophobic cus "at least they know what a woman is" - it's a monomaniacal cult.

there was a recent report about institutional misogyny in the police, and one of the main terfy journos Hadley Freeman posted this:

1638229947662876672

I mean, even if you're a bit uneasy about trans people for whatever reason, surely you should be able to see how deranged this is?

The world is more transphobic today than it was 10 years ago, meanwhile I would argue it's less homophobic. I'm not going to extrapolate too far from there, but I willing to wager that atleast some of that is purely because the attention isn't on gay people anymore.

aye, but it's kinda the same with gay rights - I'm sure the stonewall riots, in the short term, made a lot of people more consciously homophobic, but these are necessary steps. you have to resist. it's all well and good saying that trans people should keep their heads down or whatever, but that won't help anything in the long run.

Jimmy Floyd

It's far less transphobic than 10 years ago. More prominence to the debate, but I would suggest the majority effect of that is that more people alter their behaviour. 10 years ago all and sundry would chuck around tranny remarks in normal life, much less of it now.

Same thing happened with homophobia. The reason it's less homophobic now is because there was a raging debate or whatever for years and eventually it got to critical mass whereby instead of calling people faggots, most people switched to not doing so.

Part of the problem seems to be that there are a load of people who're completely fucked off with the issue that are mistaken for transphobes as a result. They've got no issue with trans people, but they do have an issue with the hanging on twats (of which there are seemingly many) that have zero sense of reason and aren't even fighting for a cause that affects them, so fuck knows how they'll know when they've 'won'.

Conflating homosexuality with this issue is such a red herring. There weren't millions of people who had nothing to do with being homosexual raging for their cause on Twitter (or in the town square) and demanding we change language, basic biological definitions and sporting eligibility. You just don't get to do those things and expect to come off favourably with the people you're trying to change the minds of.

No, I am saying that allies largely don't care what Trans people want, they just want their own voices to be heard, and then they end up giving the Daily Mail easy headlines when they say some stupid shit and it's Trans people on the receiving end of it.

Do you define the 'rights of trans people' and 'want[ing] trans people to be free from prejudice' to include things like access to women-only spaces? It's easy to act like you're the reasonable person here, but taking a consistent position either way is bound to upset one side.

if by women-only spaces you mean bogs then yeah absolutely, MTF trans people having a shite in a cubicle next to a cis-woman is such a non-issue. changing rooms, I understand why it's quite an emotive topic, but I think cubicles instead of communal changing rooms are the obvious solution there - that staniland poses the deliberately provocative question of if you'd be happy for your daughter to be in the same room as a trans woman with bits flopping about, but I wouldn't want any child to be in a big room with naked adults.

I know you've got there first, but the crux of this is very few people actually believe that a trans Woman is a Woman, otherwise all of these things would be fine. Which makes us all transphobes in the eyes of many, which therefore makes the accusation almost meaningless, yet it's still banded about so much.

Lewis
03-05-2023, 05:56 PM
I think if really, really pressed on it then most people would be forced to admit that they don't think transwomen are real women, but I also think that the only groups of people who have ever given it any real thought are the trannies themselves, and the so-called 'gender critical' people. Most people just vibe along with it in one form or another, including being terrified to be seen as any-sort-of-phobe, so the ratchet - as always - tends to click in favour of the people who are most insane and willing to bully their way to success, which obviously favours the mentally ill and/or fetishists.

Food prices are surely being artificially inflated by some as we now shop at M&S and it’s the same price as Asda. This wouldn’t have been even close in previous years.

Fuel prices again seem to be inflated by supermarkets. I am filling up at the Shell service station for cheaper than the local Asda. They used to be a good >10p cheaper.

Supermarkets run a high volume, low margin business model, whereas farmers run the opposite. Neither model necessarily equates to ripping people off.

Jim's right mind. Every business did it, but most were eventually stopped by demand for the product (at ridiculous prices) dropping off. The problem when it comes to supermarkets though is that people always need the products, no matter the price.

Ben
16-05-2023, 06:23 AM
Which is why we switched to M&S. Someone told my Mrs that it is basically the same price as Asda/Tesco/Morrisons these days and we laughed it off as complete bobbins. She gave it a try anyway and fuck me, they were right. Our normal weekly supermarket shop always hovered around £60-70 in the new high price era and our last M&S effort was £61.85 and the quality of the fresh food is infinitely better. We don't use the supermarket for everything but we're not losing out and are getting better quality for it too.

Anyone heard anything about this pink cocaine? Tuci.

Yep, it was talked about a lot when I was in BCN last year. It sounded shit.

Pill Report provide information about drugs on Instagram. In one post they said: “The shit your dealer’s selling as Tuci is probably a plain old mix of ketamine and MDMA, with none of that elusive 2C-B.

“It’s a bit of a lucky dip too, as lab test sfrequently find caffeine 3-MMC and other synthetics.

“The amounts of each substance change wildly from batch to batch, so you’ll never get exactly the same high twice. It’s called ‘dealers’ leftovers’ in Holland as it’s literally the sweep of whatever’s in the bottom of the bag, then dyed pink to make it look pretty.

I know all bankers are bastards, and it's hardly surprising to see figures like Trichet at the heart of this sort of chicanery, but this is a pretty massive scandal right? I mean, notwithstanding that all banks and bankers are bastards, is it really right for massive fines and terms of imprisonment to be imposed for doing the same things that governments/state agencies essentially demanded be done, and then failed to disclose that had been demanded? Seems a bit off to me.

Chase seems a bit of a strong term for something apparently involving an electric bike and a motor vehicle. I mean, that's not a pursuit that's going to last very long is it? The dimwits were probably 'fleeing' from the van and managed to head-on themselves into something else [how else do you manage to die crashing an electric bike?]. And the obvious reaction thereafter is to torch the neighbourhood.

Lewis
23-05-2023, 08:23 PM
Any electric bike going fast enough to be involved in a deadly accident must have cost a few quid, so the current NARRATIVE all seems a bit too straight-forward.
