Wonder where that leaves LGBQT+.

A similar thing is happening in the US with 'Latinx', with most actual Hispanic folk preferring the terms Hispanic, Latino or Latina. Guardian journo's currently scrambling to blame the Latinx term as being the creation of a white monster.

Maybe not applicable in the instant case, but it gets a bit sketchy when a legislature can be passing laws which will universally not apply to themselves [ie the people voting], but will to other citizens or whatever you want to call them.

If it's that big a deal just outright ban them.

Also, a bit pointless what with the whole parliamentary sovereignty thing meaning the next parliament could just delete the law.

Birmingham City have renamed part of their stadium in memory of six-year-old Arthur Labinjo-Hughes.

The family zone will be called Arthur's Area and will be "a fun-filled space for young supporters to enjoy prior to kick-off", the club said.

I try not to generalise about and shit on other professions, but in my experience social workers are universally absolutely incompetent.

A lot of the time they end up making friends with the parents, become completely blind to what's going on and will actively defend them to other professionals who have concerns.

I "work with" Social Workers atleast a few times a month and I can count the number of positive encounters on one hand. Most of them spend their time just trying to palm off their workload.

I spoke to one last week that wouldn't remove a child from a known drug dealers house because "he'd only run away and come back".

Quite a few yeah. It got a LOT worse during lockdowns (I would say anecdotally we were seeing five times as many as is usual for us).

It's often not as straightforward as you'd. Some are, but you see quite a few injuries where you absolutely can't say for sure whether it's inflicted or not.

Some of the shit you see from social workers is unreal though. We had one the other week where a mum had fled an abusive partner from another region of the country with the kid. Kid had injuries who mum was worried might have been caused by the dad, but had never seen him actually hit the child (only her). The social worker saw her, did nothing about it and just told her to rock up to a hospital in a few days :cab:

Sounds like Social Workers are incredibly lazy.

What's the crack when you suspect a kid has been abused? Straight on the phone to the rozzers or does that only happen in tv dramas and you just contact the social workers?

Spikey M
12-12-2021, 12:32 PM
They're Civil Service staff. They'll be over worked, under staffed, under paid, poorly managed and drowning in paperwork.

I imagine they all start out keen and well intentioned. I don't think you'd go into that line of work if you weren't. It'll be the system that's the problem.

randomlegend
12-12-2021, 12:40 PM
They absolutely are overworked but a lot of the stuff I take issue with - like them blatantly getting taken in by the parents - aren't "overwork" issues.

It all gets done by my seniors, but I think initially we contact CADs (whatever that stands for) and it goes from there. Whether and how quickly police get involved depends on how significant the injuries are and how definite it is they were inflicted.

I have seen a parent arrested from the ward though.

The civil service basically runs on people ducking making decisions/taking responsibility for things, so, in these sort of areas it must be especially easy to just leave things as they are. If you play the odds then not many kids get abused and killed, and if they do then you can point to the process and the organisation will cover your arse; but if you prematurely remove them from their family then you get pulled into the courts and your prospects get tanked. With that in mind, blaming the individual social workers is probably a bit pointless.

randomlegend
12-12-2021, 04:04 PM
We've also on more than one occasion had social workers blatantly lie to parents to get them to take the child to hospital and we then have to deal with the fallout when they realise they aren't just coming for the kid to have a quick checkup.

I'm sure from a bystander point of view people would make the "well you say what you can to get them to come" argument but it's insanely unprofessional/unethical.

Regarding the first point.... I must admit whenever I tune in to an illegal Sky Sports stream, I always find the adverts really weird. The Black to Front Project is part of Channel 4’s ongoing commitment to improve Black representation on-screen and more widely in the TV industry. The purpose of the project is two-fold: firstly, to challenge us all to see our content differently, and secondly, to leave a lasting legacy in terms of increased Black representation both on- and off-screen.

And I say that as someone who really couldn't give a shit what colour the actors are as long as they're good, but when the ethnicity of the group you're claiming is under represented only make up 3% of the population, meaning they're actually over represented, my bullshit detector goes haywire.

On a separate point Hollywood have served up some absolute stinkers with Women in lead roles (labouring under the misapprehension that if you do that you don't need to worry about the quality of the writing or anything else) and at some point audiences will switch bad films off, even if they're films that are cannon in a beloved franchise. It was a conscious decision by my mum as she thought we ate enough chocolate as it was. A common theme actually - she also didn't play any pop music in the house until I was about ten (even though she herself liked pop music) because she thought we'd discover that for ourselves anyway, so it was always Classic FM or classical CDs. Oh yeah, and I could only have the much sought after Coco Pops on Saturdays - had to be blander cereal on the other days of the week.

Funny, looking back. I've started reading loads of books about the 60s, 70s and 80s recently to try and understand where it is I actually come from.

We weren't allowed fizzy drinks at all until I was about 11. Remember an orangina on holiday in France being the first one I ever had and thinking it was some kind of magical nectar. I was very restricted on things like computer games etc as well.

I think even she would now think it was all insane, but it's definitely contributed to my having a deep fear of breaking rules, among other things.

It's all relevant I'd say, 32 and 40, probably not. But 28 and 20 is a bit suspect. When I was 28 I could have thought of anything worse than being in a prolonged conversation with a 20 year old. I think when you are the older one messing around with someone who is barely out of their teens it suggests the whole thing is heavily reliant on the sexual dynamic.

2001:

In 2001, the goat was burned down by a 51-year-old visitor from Cleveland, Ohio in the United States, who spent 18 days in jail and was subsequently convicted and ordered to pay 100,000 Swedish kronor in damages. The court confiscated his cigarette lighter with the argument that he clearly was not able to handle it. He stated in court that he was no "goat burner", and believed that he was taking part in a completely legal goat-burning tradition. After he was released from jail he returned to the US without paying his fine.

2005:

Burnt by unknown vandals reportedly dressed as Santa and the gingerbread man, by shooting a flaming arrow at the goat. Reconstructed on 5 December. The hunt for the arsonist responsible for the goat-burning in 2005 was featured on the weekly Swedish live broadcast TV3's "Most Wanted" ("Efterlyst") on 8 December.

But is she right? Many comedians say their industry is in fine - and funny - form. Nobody is being censored, they claim. And in the end, it is audiences who decide what's funny and what's offensive.

Take comedian Russell Kane, who knows a thing or two about cancellation. He presents Radio 4's Evil Genius, which each week takes a different figure from history and decides, based on their actions, whether they should be saved or cancelled.

He told me it's "complete nonsense" that comedians are sacrificing being funny because they don't want to be cancelled.

Seems a reasonable stance and one at this point I agree with.

However, he does think he and his fellow comedians worry about being cancelled for things they might have said in the past which have since become less acceptable. "I signed up for a website called TweetDelete and all my posts that are older than six months have gone. It's a bit of self-protection."

My Mum still goes round my grandparents and finds my 91 year old grandad up trees. The day after I took him to the football, he took his tractor and trailer down to the local woods and collected a trailerful of firewood on his own. Man is a beast.

Warehouse worker Paul Martin had his bags packed and was ready to fly to the Alabama hospital bed of former top global porn star Sasha Grey.

The 52-year-old bachelor was also ready to send £1,700 for the medication the X-rated Californian needed to save her life.

Then the Sunday Mercury burst the fan’s bubble.

We have found no evidence Ms Grey, whose body of cinematic work includes The Porn Diaries, Dawn of Sex and Bang Gang (A Modern Love Story), is battling for life in the UAB Hospital, Madison County, Alabama, as Mr Martin, from Rugby, has been informed.

We have been unable to contact the medic who sent a pleading message to Paul which included the emotive line: “Send £1,700 or she will die.”

He is the unwitting victim of a porn scam.

Ms Grey, who turned her back on the X rated industry 10 years ago to successfully pursue a mainstream career, is also an unwitting victim of the salacious con.

Her name has been used without her knowledge to prise money from punters.

Paul – despite being presented with our evidence – still intends to fly to the Deep South on Friday. He has paid £600 for a flight.

He admits to working “72 hours for the last 14 weeks” to finance the mercy dash.

“If I don’t see her, I don’t see her,” he shrugged. “I’d like to visit the place, anyway. I think it’s got mountains"

I did like with that clip Nadine Dorries stretching the definition of 'fantastic' to absolute breaking point with "Fantastic question!"

Personally I think all programming should be replaced with the national anthem. Including streaming platforms. If they want to make money over here they can respect our customs.

Anyway, I came to post this:

I'll support his proposal on the condition we change the national anthem to I Vow To Thee, or Land of 'ope and Glory. The Germanic dirge we currently have is a nonsense.

Kikó

If only we had a way to play the national anthem on demand like some sort of music or video platform.

It's another nonsense comment though to capture the attention of the "woke" and then say how they don't love Britain when Jim Felton makes a funny.

I was always under the impression that if people basically admit offences in open court then the judge has to direct the jury to return a guilty verdict [they don't get to just decide whatever they want] so there must have been something else at play here. That said, I didn't know 'the right side of history' and/or 'Bristol City Council have been cunts for years' were actual legal defences.

Ian

I've no idea if that Secret Barrister on the Twitter is full of shit but they said:

Since the 17th century, juries have been entitled to acquit a defendant for any reason. They are not explicitly told this – they are directed by the judge that they must reach verdicts based on the evidence they have heard. But a judge cannot force a jury to convict. So the jury retains the prerogative to acquit, irrespective of the strength of the case against a defendant, and the courts cannot interfere (sometimes referred to as a “perverse verdict” or “jury nullification”). This principle is embedded into our common law.

I've just found the bit I saw tweeted but the full waffle is here: https://thesecretbarrister.com/2022/01/06/do-the-verdicts-in-the-trial-of-the-colston-4-signal-something-wrong-with-our-jury-system-10-things-you-should-know/

If anything that just strikes me as something that'll make those who want politicians to be able to change any verdicts they don't like the look of even more adamant about it.

That just reads as their lawyers threw enough shit at the wall and some of it stuck.

Pretty unusual for criminal damage to go to the crown court anyway so it was always likely they'd get off [I think you have a better than 50% chance of acquittal in a jury trial].

Lewis

They seem to have argued that a) the statue being up was the real crime; and b) that the people who 'owned' the statue wouldn't have minded. They both seem like balls given that the local government had consistently chosen not to remove it, but it sounds like there could be interesting implications for anyone bashing a paedophile because the state had chosen to be lenient and endanger the locals.

Spikey M
07-01-2022, 10:11 AM
It was a political hearing with just as political an outcome.

Choose who you want to annoy; the statue staggers that will sit and tut and the Daily Mail tomorrow morning, or the Antifa bods that are likely to smash London up and Piss on Churchill.

Yevrah
07-01-2022, 10:16 AM
It's a ridiculous outcome, with potential consequences far graver (as Lewis describes). Don't these things set precedents as well?

Lewis
07-01-2022, 10:23 AM
I don't think they set formal precedent, but it will give people grounds to challenge things. That said, it will all still have to come under sanctioned vigilantism, so [increased] free rein to assault 'racists' (but not anyone directly involved in politics) and vandalising things on climate grounds. Something which the 'lol lets smash Karl Marx' professional right-wing wankers have all missed.

Yevrah
07-01-2022, 12:05 PM
Looks like it might set some form of precedent without further clarification:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-59909823

Ms Braverman said she would decide whether to use powers that, as Attorney General, allow her to seek a Court of Appeal hearing so senior judges "have the opportunity to clarify the law for future cases".

Lewis
07-01-2022, 12:21 PM
A Conservative government with a large majority would simply legislate to protect historic monuments with specific offences (and probably do so in about a week), rather than just treating it as if you kicked a fence down. Maybe if we get one one day.

Interesting to note that the original BBC story refers to taking the knee as a 'symbolic gesture of the BLM movement', having been assured for eighteen months solid that it definitely wasn't. That could do with some clarification as well.

Kikó

A jury can't set precedent.

Yevrah
07-01-2022, 12:27 PM
A jury can't set precedent.

Maybe precedent is the wrong word then, but the outcome of this case appears to suggest that it's absolute fine to commit criminal damage if the target of such damage is deemed deserving of it. You might have to go to court, but get a sympathetic jury and you're golden.

No idea how they clarify it as anything other than that, so I'm genuinely intrigued.

It’s called Jury Nullification and has existed since juries have existed. It’s not the end of the world as we know it.

You might have to go to court, but get a sympathetic jury and you're golden.

Hence why you can challenge the jury and prosecution has the right to stand jurors too.
