I remember one day reading an article about Gamergate on Kotaku and one of the example tweets of these absolute nutjobs was my first roommate at Uni. I always hated him so I was happy to know I was right about him.

He was such an Apple fanboy claiming that 'everyone knew they were intrinsically better than a PC' that he claimed ITV rebranded to ITV because they'd heard Apple were releasing their own TV Channel and changed their name to fuck over Steve Jobs.

"We had a few safety nets, but they weren't enough for Covid," says Marshall Kinder-Maiss, 20.

Three weeks before the UK went into lockdown in March 2020, he and his partner Joanne thought their dreams had come true. After 18 months of trying to conceive a child, Joanne had just given birth to a baby boy, Roman.

Trying to conceive? Pet, you were 17 when you started. :D

They are now £4,000 in rent arrears and have been served with an eviction notice. They must leave the house by 11 October.

Not having a kid would've solved that.

When the couple were both working full-time, they used to take home around £2,000 a month. Their £450-a-month rent quickly became unaffordable as overdrafts were maximised to pay for living expenses. They've struggled to pay rent ever since.

Yeah, that's what happens when you take one person's ability to earn and add another mouth into the mix. At 19.

Spikey M
23-09-2021, 08:27 AM
Something doesn't add up there at all. They were either Furloughed and above UC earning qualifiers - so pay your rent, you're 20% down, cut back elsewhere - or they were out of work - so claim UC and they pay your rent for you.

I genuinely believe the Government banning evictions has caused more problems than it solved. It was perceived as permission to not pay their rent by alot of people, and they've absolutely fucked themselves in the long run.

SvN
23-09-2021, 08:33 AM
Absolutely. A friend of mine helps his dad manage a few rental properties, and he had some tenants - who were still working throughout lockdown - just stop paying rent, because they knew they could get away with it. Last time I spoke to him, they were 10 months behind and refusing to pay or leave.

So, anyway, this whole gas business got my BS feelers tingling earlier in the week. I was wondering to myself whether the much reported rise in the price over the last year or whatever it is that is most commonly reported was simply one of the many things which 'has gone up a lot' since bottoming out during covid. I have no expertise in the field, but cursory googling suggests maybe this is the case:

https://www.erce.energy/graph/uk-natural-gas-nbp-spot-price/

I have no idea of the provenance of that source, but other places seem to largely mirror what it says.

So, my question is, with gas prices ostensibly well within normal parameters, why is there such a massive crisis leading to loads of energy companies going bust? Is it a phenomenon related to the practice of fixing utility prices over a period of months/years (admittedly a practice with which I wasn't familiar until quite recently)? Have loads of 'energy providers' simply sprouted during covid because prices were at rock bottom, fixed in contracts with consumers on the assumption of this remaining the case forever, and now that it isn't and you actually have to pay for gas they are all going bust [presumably rather than lose money on the forward contracts they have committed to]? All seems very suss to me.

All the big players getting people to lock into 3 year deals now when the market is at its absolute peak [potentially] also seems like a somewhat questionable practice.

The sleepover one is pure psycho behaviour and needs to be punished beyond the scope of what the law offers. The Gabby Petito one seems pretty open and shut, cabin fever and her fella has snapped and killed her.

The schoolteacher one, I genuinely don't think this is a random attack. The walking route from her house to the pub wasn't even direct via the park. To chance your arm on a random killing at that time of night with people around is very odd (I know killing is odd, obviously, but people who kill opportunistically are usually either interested in the process or product). I haven't seen it reported if anything was stolen, presumably not sexually assualted - police might keep things under their hat of course. To me that makes me think she will have known the killer, even vaguely.

Jimmy Floyd
26-09-2021, 08:23 PM
There isn't/wasn't actually a petrol shortage. It's basically a comms disaster. BP said they were closing a couple of far flung stations briefly due to no drivers (which is an established thing), the media went huge on it (as they are desperate for clicks) and it snowballed from there into nationwide panic-buying, which in a collapsed nation with no civil society is both unstoppable and inevitable, as we saw last year.

At least half the stations in the country are dry right now.

In short: heads have well and truly gone.

I was at a Sainsburys over the weekend as an old boy who probably does 10 miles a week normally was packing his bags while telling the cashier how he and his wife both did a Giggles first thing that morning. The cashier then said she'd also panic bought before work.

Utterly furious inside I wondered how far one could go with this before the cashier would find it unacceptable, so as I was packing my bags I struck up a conversation about it before telling her that me and the Mrs have four cars at home and while we only ever drive two of them we'd filled all of them up at 4:57 this morning. Not a hint of disturbed was seen on her face before she then said, without any hint of irony, "you can't be too careful, can you".

And two paragraphs in I'm utterly broken.

Sir Keir Starmer says it is "not right" to say only women have a cervix amid a row involving one of his MPs.
Rosie Duffield came under fire after supporting online criticism of a tweet, which referred to "individuals with a cervix" to be inclusive of trans men.

The incident was called transphobic by trans rights supporters - but Labour MP Ms Duffield rejects the claim.
Asked about the row, Sir Keir said claiming only women have cervixes was "something that shouldn't be said".

40 plus years. Maggie obviously laid the groundwork for all this (most of it necessary), TB ran with it (the absolute king of 'aspiration culture' as Lofty describes above), and then DC brought the Etonian complacency that was needed to allow the hyenas to move in, and which the aforementioned duo just couldn't match. The details of the case a grim enough. Then you find out he was nicknamed 'the rapist' when he was working for the CNC driving round the M25 starkers and flashing people, generally making women around him feel uncomfortable and the Met sign him up and give him a prestige role.

Hope he gets absolutely terrorised in prison.

Hopefully one of the guards let's it slip who he is. Even on the nonce wing he'll be Mr Popular.

Back on the weekend thing, that was actually the plot of an episode of Apple and Onion [child owners may recognise if they are fortunate] tat I saw the other day, which caused me to raise an eyebrow.

As to the other thing, some sort of life long experience of being put through a wood chipper [obviously I guess that experience would be about as long as was left of your life but you get what I mean] sounds about right for that chap.

The more I hear about Sarah Everard's murder, the more I'm creeped out by it. Opportunist cunt. Although any copper handcuffing you over Covid bullshit would've sent immediate alarm bells.

Coming from a police family as I do, someone using handcuffs as an accessory in a murder will properly send shivers down spines. About 90% of the force would be bringing the rotten fruit to the hypothetical gallows.

I'm always a bit confused by these 'Male Violence' narratives. Have I misunderstood them, or are they ultimately predicated on the assumption that men - Men - are somehow uneducated on this stuff, and that women get battered and killed because because people don't know any better, and society, etc. It seems to me that you could put us all through two years of mandatory consent and anti-violence training and the likes of him would still do things like that, because that's literally what makes him a criminal.

Male violence has been going on a while. It used to be how everyone got fed, before Uber Eats.

The details of that Sarah Everard murder are pretty grim. If that isn't a whole life order then they need to lower the threshold.

What did he actually do? Everything I've read states abduction, murder and disposal of the body, but no details whatsoever.

And he'll last about 5 minutes in prison I should imagine. I won't shed a tear.

He pretended he was arresting her on COVID breach grounds is the crux of it. Cuffed her and got her in the car and then obviously didn't take her down the nick.

Jimmy Floyd

He told her he was arresting her for a breach of the covid regulations, handcuffed her, put her in a car, raped her, killed her, burned her, put her into bags and buried her.

All in all, I wouldn't be surprised if the judge errs on the side of a custodial sentence.

As fucked up as that is, I'm not sure it's in the same order of magnitude as some (if not all) of the names on here.

Maybe him being a police officer changes things.

How is that conversation meant to go exactly?

Yeah... yeah. REALLY opposed... anyway sorry I interrupted dinner, keep your hands off the Chicken legs you dirty bastard. Laters"

I don’t get the ‘grim’ness of it either. Yeah it’s horrendous obviously but every time you hear of something like this they’re generally raped and murdered so it’s not really that different. Especially for a group of people that lol at death on a daily basis.

It's not the rape and murder that makes this more grim than the usual cases, it's the "copper casually able to kidnap a woman with witnesses who wouldn't have thought to do anything about it because he's a copper" bit.

There is also a healthy overlap between this sort of wishful wibble and people who would generally be against longer prison sentences for violent cunts.

Yep. Terrifying. Presumably with no pre-meditation. He wasn't stalking her. He clocked off a 12 hour shift and thought, "I sure could go for some rape about now."

It is the fact he was a copper abusing his power that amps it up. If you or I saw this on the street and thought it was awry we would have been unable to do much about it I assume, unless you were willing to call his bluff.

In the past, especially in the states there have been killers posing as police officers to commit similar crimes but for it to be the actual police officer doing it is an order of magnitude worse.

That the conflating of wolf whistling and cat calling (that I shouldn't need to add are both absolute dickhead things to do) with rape and murder, as if they were on a spectrum was a nonsense, but perhaps a convenient nonsense for the powers that be as none of those things are problems that can be solved on Twitter, but did divert some focus from the fact the met had a copper running around doing vile things in plain sight on a watch that seemingly allowed it.

Sorry you’re saying that it’s #MeToos fault that the Metropolitan Police hired a flasher nicknamed ‘The Rapist’ and gave him a sub machine gun because they can’t tell the difference between a perverted headcase and a guy who’s a bit too forward because they’re too concentrated on what people on Twitter(a minority percentage of the population) say?

Got to say, that’s not a great review of the Met.

They probably didnt even want to murder Mark Duggan in cold blood and then plant a pistol on him but Twitter told them he was a bad man so they just shot him 7 times.

The metropolitan police is an awful collection of corrupt officers who protect their own going back to before Jimmy Saville was molesting kids under their watch.

And I'm saying it was entirely the fault of the met for letting a headcase carry a badge and that this seems to have been lost in the noise somewhat, or at least was at the time.
